Selling a Porsche 924 that won't run
Every NHTSA complaint on the Porsche 924 sits under one heading: the gasoline fuel system. There are only four, two on the 1987 and two on the 1988, and the car's single recall is a fuel hose too.

The 924 S: what the 1987-1988 records show
EPA data has the 924 for two model years, both as the 924 S. Wikipedia explains why it came back: in 1985 Volkswagen discontinued the engine the 924 had used, so Porsche fitted a slightly detuned 944 engine, dropped the Turbo, renamed the car the 924S and reintroduced it in the US. Wikipedia lists that engine as the 2.5-liter M44/40 four-cylinder. Porsche ended the 924 in 1988 and marketed the 944 as its entry-level car.
| Model year | Complaints | Component named | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1987 | 2 | Fuel system, gasoline (2) | 1 |
| 1988 | 2 | Fuel system, gasoline (2), hoses, lines and fittings | 1 |
Our count of the 924's NHTSA complaints, October 10, 2026. Not one of the four mentions a crash, fire or injury.
Recall 90V061: the fuel line hose
Filed in April 1990, this campaign covers both 924 S years. The short section of high-pressure fuel hose between the fuel rail and the pressure regulator was made of a material that could harden, and fuel could leak where the hose meets the metal pipe fittings. The remedy was new hoses of improved material. NHTSA puts 53,427 vehicles in that campaign. Other models may be part of that figure, so it isn't the 924's alone.
Four complaints over two years is a small file. It doesn't rate the car; it only shows what the few owners who wrote in had in common.
Where the 924 came from
Wikipedia's Porsche article says the 924 used many Audi components and was built at Audi's Neckarsulm factory, the former NSU plant, with Volkswagen as the subcontractor. Wikipedia's 924 article adds that it was criticized for its performance but still became one of Porsche's best-selling models. Earlier 924s, like the 2.0-liter car in the photo, fall outside the EPA and NHTSA records on this page.
Fuel trouble on a parked 924
A 924 S that has sat for years and smells of fuel is the case these records point to. NHTSA's VIN search shows whether 90V061 was done, and don't start the car if fuel is leaking. If the list of work keeps growing, our car sitting for years guide covers the fix-or-sell decision.
Selling a 924 whole
- Confirm the model: 924 S or an earlier 924, plus the VIN and mileage.
- Describe the condition: runs, cranks, or seized; any fuel smell; how long it has sat.
- Say where the 924 sits and if it rolls freely.
- Leave it in one piece. Mention parts already removed.
- Call (877) 421-6008 or start online. The driver will check the 924's title against your ID. Lost title on an old car? See selling with no title.
The 924S engine came from the 944; every other model is on our Porsche page.
Questions people ask
- What is the 924 recall about?
- Campaign 90V061 covers 1987-1988 cars. The short high-pressure fuel hose between the fuel rail and the pressure regulator could harden and leak at its metal fittings, and the remedy was a hose made of improved material. The 53,427 figure belongs to the entire campaign; it may count other models too.
- Why does your data start in 1987 when the 924 began in 1976?
- EPA's fuel economy data lists the 924 only for 1987 and 1988, as the 924 S, and all 4 NHTSA complaints are on those two years. Wikipedia says Porsche reintroduced the car in the US as the 924S after VW stopped making its original engine in 1985.
- Will you buy a 924 that's been parked for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say how many years your 924 has sat and whether its wheels turn.
