Selling a Porsche 968 that no longer runs
On the Porsche 968, 7 of 9 NHTSA complaints name the power train. For a car Wikipedia says was built from 1991 to 1995 and dropped for poor sales, the file is short, but it points in one direction.

Complaints and recalls by model year
Our October 10, 2026 tally of the 968's NHTSA file. The 1991 row comes from recall 94V088, which NHTSA lists under that model year, ahead of the EPA's 1992-1995 range.
| Model year | Complaints | Power train complaints | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1991 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| 1992 | 0 | 0 | 2 |
| 1993 | 3 | 3 | 0 |
| 1994 | 4 | 3 | 0 |
| 1995 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
The 1994 has the most complaints, 4; the one that isn't power train names the electrical system. On the 1995, one of the two names the structure.
One generation, two recall years
Wikipedia lists two engines, both 3.0-liter inline fours: the 16-valve M44/12 and an 8-valve turbo M44/60. Gearbox choices were a 6-speed manual and a 4-speed Tiptronic automatic. EPA data files the car as a minicompact and a two-seater.
All three recalls are early:
- 92V014 (1992): bolts holding the steering rack to the chassis may have been stretched by over-tightening at the factory and could loosen. The fix was stronger bolts, and a new rack if the old one was damaged. 85 vehicles in the campaign.
- 92V061 (1992): the rear engine compartment cover near the cruise control servo could slip and bind the servo's safety clip. Dealers added a bolt and washer. 854 vehicles.
- 94V088 (model year 1991): a cowl cover not sealed at the base of the windshield let water reach the wiper motor. Dealers installed a new motor cover. 1,178 vehicles across the campaign, which may reach beyond the 968.
The three complaint years, 1993 to 1995, have no recalls at all.
Where the 968 came from
Wikipedia says that during development, 80 percent of the 944's mechanical components were significantly modified or replaced, so Porsche management named it a new model instead of another 944. It was discontinued in 1995 alongside the 928, the only other front-engine Porsche at the time, and the Boxster took its place.
Keep it or sell it?
Type the VIN into NHTSA's recall search, mainly to confirm the 1992 steering rack bolts were done. If the problem is the gearbox or clutch, the bad transmission guide explains how to weigh a quote against the car. If it's a project that has stalled, read old project car first.
Selling a 968 whole
- Describe the car: body style, manual or Tiptronic, VIN and mileage.
- Say what fails and when: won't shift, slips, won't start, or won't move.
- Give the 968's location and whether its wheels turn, since that sets which tow truck comes.
- Leave it complete, soft top and wheels included. Mention anything already removed.
- Call (877) 421-6008 or start online. Hand over the signed title when the truck arrives; after you sell covers plates and insurance.
Related Porsches: the 944 it replaced, the 928, and the Boxster.
