What to do with a dead Porsche Boxster
Nearly three in four Boxster complaints at NHTSA concern the first generation. The 1997-2004 cars hold 139 of the 190 on file, and the part named most across all years is engine and engine cooling.

When the engine is gone on a car this age, the repair can outrun the car. You can sell the whole car as it sits instead: we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
The engine story, from Wikipedia
The Boxster's early M96 engines had their own run of trouble, and Wikipedia lays it out:
- Cylinder liners. The M96 had a number of failures with cracked or slipped cylinder liners, resolved by a minor redesign and better control of the casting process in late 1999.
- Porous blocks. Some early engine blocks were porous from casting problems, which could let coolant and oil mingle. Porsche repaired faulty engines by boring out the cast sleeves and inserting new ones rather than scrapping the block.
- The IMS bearing. Boxsters built between May 4, 2001 and February 21, 2005 have suffered engine failure from the intermediate shaft bearing. That led to a class action, Eisen v. Porsche Cars North America, settled in March 2013 subject to court approval. Some say the IMS problem isn't limited to those years.
Owner complaints to NHTSA often name the engine too. On the 1999, 16 of 28 complaints name engine and engine cooling. On the 2005, it's 10 of 19. These are owner reports, not confirmed failures.
Generations and their complaint counts
These figures were read off NHTSA's complaint data dated October 10, 2026. A complaint records what one owner reported; it doesn't rate the car. Boxsters after 2012 are the youngest here, with fewer seasons for owners to report trouble. Generation dates are Wikipedia's.
| Generation | Wikipedia dates | Model years here | Complaints | Pattern in the file |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 986 | 1996-2004 | 1997-2004 | 139 | Engine and cooling, electrical, structure |
| 987 | 2005-2012 | 2005-2012 | 35 | Engine and cooling on the 2005, then power train |
| 981 | 2012-2016 | 2013-2016 | 16 | Brakes, structure, engine |
From 2017 the car became the 718 Boxster, with a turbocharged flat-four in place of the flat-six; we cover it on the 718 page. Wikipedia says Boxster and Cayman production ended in October 2025. Wikipedia lists three assembly sites: Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen (1996-2025), Valmet in Finland (1997-2011) and, from 2012, the former Karmann plant in Osnabrück.
986, 1997-2004
The 1997 is the year of three recalls at once: a cracking ignition switch that can cause electrical failures (98V113, 3,217 vehicles), seizing bearing sleeves in the Tiptronic selector levers (98V112, 738 vehicles), and a key-lock cable to the shift selector that may be adjusted wrong on Tiptronic cars (03V004, which runs through the 2003 model year and covers 12,234 vehicles). Electrical complaints lead on the 1997, 7 of 22.
Owners filed more complaints on the 1998 than on any other year, 32, with structure named most (9). Recall 22V656 checks headlights for missing sealing caps on 2001-2004 Boxsters. Its 222,858 figure spans every model in it (Cayenne, Macan, Panamera and Cayman S as well), with no Boxster-only number given.
987 and 981, 2005-2016
Complaints drop off sharply after 2005. The 2006 through 2012 cars have 16 complaints together, spread across the power train, engine, air bags, electrical system and brakes. The 2013 has 11. Recall 21V679 replaces side sections of the rear-axle carrier that can crack through on 2013-2015 Boxsters, in a 4,934-vehicle campaign that includes the Cayman. Recall 14V698 replaces the front hood lock on cars built from May to September 2014, a 1,382-vehicle campaign shared with the 911 and Cayman.
Year-by-year counts

Rebuild or sell?
A Boxster with a failed engine usually comes down to one quote. Have the shop put it on paper, then see what a Boxster of your year and trim brings with a good engine. If the quote takes most of that, selling it unrepaired is the cleaner move.
- Check recalls by VIN at NHTSA. Most Boxster recalls are on 1997 and 2013-2015 cars.
- IMS-window car? Wikipedia's dates describe a build window; a car outside it can still have the problem, and one inside may not. A diagnosis tells you what actually broke.
- Weigh it with our blown engine guide, and old or high mileage if the rest of the car is tired too.
Selling the Boxster whole
- Note the VIN, mileage, what failed and whether it rolls.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is. A low roadster in a tight garage, under a cover, or on flat tires after years parked is all fine; just say so, and the truck comes ready. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the car complete, soft top, wheels and catalytic converters included. If the engine or anything else has been pulled, tell us.
- Have the title and your driver's license on hand when the truck comes. Without a title, read selling with no title. For plates and insurance, read after you sell.
The 911 and Cayman have their own pages, and so does every other Porsche we cover.

- Which Boxster model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- It's the 1998 Boxster, at 32 complaints by October 10, 2026. After it come the 1999 (28), the 1997 (22), and the 2003 and 2005 at 19 apiece. NHTSA's file holds no Boxster complaints after the 2015 model year.
