Got a Ram 2500 that's done? Sell it whole
One model year dominates the Ram 2500's NHTSA file. The 2018 has 2,600 of the 5,134 complaints owners have filed, just over half, and 1,756 of those name the service brakes. The 2017 is next with 697, and 400 of those name the brakes too.

How to read these numbers
Each Ram 2500 count below is from NHTSA owner reports on file October 10, 2026. One report is not a proven fault, and a late-model 2500 has had fewer years of driving to draw them. Recall vehicle totals are for the whole campaign, which usually spans several Ram models.
Our sources give no generation dates for the 2500, so the problems below are grouped by the years the complaint data shows. Ram Trucks became its own brand in 2010, and only five complaints sit under this name before 2013.
Ram 2500 complaints by model year
| Model year | Owner complaints | Crash reports | Injuries | Recall campaigns | Leading component |

| 2013 | 178 | 7 | 4 | 14 | Electrical (31) |

Years with no row have no complaints filed under the Ram 2500 name. A recall campaign can cover more than one model year, so that column does not add up to 65.
What owners report, year group by year group
2013-2016: steering, engine and power train
These four years hold 992 complaints, spread across steering, engine and power train with no single runaway. The 2014 has the most of the group, 341, and 68 of them name the steering.
Recalls that touch these trucks:
- Cummins water pumps (17V562000). 2013-2017 trucks with the 6.7L Turbo Diesel and Concentric-brand water pumps get new pumps. The campaign's 443,874 vehicles include the 3500 and cab chassis trucks.
- Steering drag link (19V021000). A jam nut on the outboard steering linkage can loosen and let the drag link separate. It covers 2014-2018 2500s along with the 3500.
- Curtain air bags (17V302000). Restraint software update on 2013-2016 trucks.
- Power tailgate latch (18V486000). 2015-2017 pickups with a power-locking tailgate.
2017-2018: the brake years
These two model years hold 3,297 complaints, more than every other 2500 year combined. On the 2018, 1,756 name the service brakes and 442 name the hydraulic brake components. If your 2017 or 2018 has a brake issue, run the VIN through NHTSA's recall lookup before you pay for a repair.
2019-2022: fuel systems and a diesel warning
Complaint counts drop sharply after 2018. The 2019 is led by fuel and propulsion (31) and the 2020 by the diesel fuel system (28). Electrical complaints lead on 2021 and 2022.
Two diesel recalls carry a PARK OUTSIDE warning: 21V798000 for 2021-2022 trucks with the Cummins 6.7L and 23V060000 for 2021-2023. Both involve a relay that can short. Recall 22V140000 updates ABS software that may keep electronic stability control from working on 2019-2022 2500s, and 22V904000 adjusts tailgate strikers on 2019-2022 pickups.
2023-2026: too new to judge
These years have 196 complaints between them. That's partly because they've been on the road for less time. Recall 26V059000 replaces the trailer tow module on 2025-2026 trucks, in a campaign shared with Jeeps and other Rams.
Selling the whole truck
- Have the details ready: VIN, mileage, gas or diesel, cab and bed, and what's wrong.
- Request an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us how it sits. Does it roll? Is the 2500 parked in a driveway, out in a field or at a shop? Mention anything bolted on, like a flatbed, gooseneck hitch or plow frame, so the right tow truck comes.
- Don't strip it. Leave the wheels, the diesel exhaust parts and the bed in place. Already sold the wheels or the exhaust? Tell us, since that changes the offer.
- On 2500 pickup day, set out the title, the keys and your ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance by state.
Fix it, or sell it?
Compare the written repair quote to what the truck brings once it's running. When the 2500 repair quote nears that figure or passes it, selling the truck unfixed is the smarter call.
- Brakes on a 2017-2018: check for open recalls first, then get a quote. See bad brakes.
- Diesel running rough or in limp mode: diesel emissions problems explains what's involved.
- Engine done: blown engine helps you weigh it.
- Bills higher than the truck: read when repairs cost more than it's worth.

Questions people ask
- Why does the 2018 Ram 2500 have so many complaints?
- Owners filed 2,600 complaints on it, and 1,756 name the service brakes. Another 442 name the hydraulic brake components. That is a count of owner reports to NHTSA as of October 10, 2026, not a rating of the truck.
- What are the PARK OUTSIDE recalls on the 2500?
- Two campaigns cover trucks with the Cummins 6.7L Turbo Diesel. Recall 21V798000 (2021-2022) and recall 23V060000 (2021-2023) both involve a relay that can short. NHTSA's notices advise keeping the truck outdoors, clear of structures and other vehicles, until a dealer fixes it.
- Will you buy a diesel 2500 that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, heavy-duty pickups included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us it's a diesel, what it does, and whether it rolls.
