Selling a broken Ram ProMaster van

On the 2021 ProMaster, the component owners name most often isn't the engine or the transmission. It's the backup camera system, in 18 of 118 complaints to NHTSA, and 2021 has more complaints than any other ProMaster year. Several recalls deal with the van's rearview camera.

Where the ProMaster comes from

Wikipedia describes the ProMaster as the North American version of a European van whose third generation went into production in September 2006. In Europe it's sold as the Peugeot Boxer and the Citroën Jumper. North American model years start in 2014, so every US ProMaster belongs to that third generation. It sits on the X250 platform, uses a front-engine, front-wheel-drive layout, and is assembled in Atessa, Italy.

Wikipedia lists the 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 and a 3.0-liter Iveco four-cylinder, which it files under petrol/CNG. NHTSA recall 19V818000 instead describes ProMasters with a 3.0L diesel or 3.6L gasoline engine. Transmissions are a 6-speed automated manual and the 62TE automatic.

The ProMaster numbers on this page are owner reports to NHTSA, tallied October 10, 2026, not a judgment of the van. A van from 2024 on has spent fewer years in service gathering reports. A recall's vehicle total is for the entire campaign, and that often takes in other models.

Problems by model-year group

2014-2018: shifting, cooling fans and water in the wiring

Power train leads the 2014 and 2015, and the electrical system leads 2017 and 2018. The recalls fit those categories:

  • Shifter cable (20V036000). On 2014-2019 vans with the 3.6, the shift cable can separate from the transmission, so the van won't shift. Dealers replace the cable.
  • Cooling fan (19V818000). On 2015-2018 vans with the 3.0 diesel or the 3.6 and air conditioning, the engine cooling fan can seize. Dealers replace the fan module.
  • Corroded connectors (14V294000). Water getting in around the footwell can corrode circuits on 2014 vans. Dealers inspect the connectors, the ignition fuse and the restraint module.
  • Air bag labels (17V273000). Labels and manuals on 2014-2017 vans claim advanced front air bags the van doesn't have.

2019-2021: park pawl and the camera

The 2019 has 22 power train complaints out of 60. Recall 23V301000 covers 2019-2021 vans with the 62TE transmission, where debris can keep the park pawl from fully engaging. Dealers update software and inspect or replace transmission parts.

The 2021's camera complaints line up with recall 25V552000. Cracks in the camera's microprocessor can stop the image from showing, and dealers replace the camera. That campaign also includes 2019-2020 Dodge Journeys.

2022-2026: steering and software

Steering leads the 2022 with 16 complaints and the 2023 with 34 of 96. On September 29, 2026, NHTSA logged recall 26V621000: water can get into the electric power steering wiring harness on 2022-2026 ProMaster 1500, 2500 and 3500 vans. The 265,512 vehicles also include 2024-2026 Ram 3500 Electric vans.

Other recalls for these years: 25V330000 fixes software that can blank the rearview camera on 2022-2025 vans, and 24V129000 covers 2022-2023 vans whose driver seat belt warning light and chime may not come on; dealers inspect the driver seat belt buckle and replace it as necessary. One fan recall reaches back further. Recall 25V720000 says the radiator fan circuit may overheat on 2018-2026 vans, and dealers replace the fan module and fuse.

Fix the van or sell it?

For a work van, the question is the repair bill against what the van earns or sells for once it runs. When the bill gets close to that, sell it whole.

  1. Check the VIN in NHTSA's recall lookup. Several fixes above are dealer jobs at no charge to the owner.
  2. Won't shift or won't hold in Park? Recalls 20V036000 and 23V301000 are worth asking about. See bad transmission.
  3. Steering warning on a 2022-2026? Recall 26V621000 is new, so ask a dealer even if you've had no letter.
  4. Electrical faults that keep coming back? Electrical problems helps you decide.

Selling a ProMaster whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage, roof height, wheelbase, engine and what's wrong.
  2. Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where it is and whether it rolls. A high-roof van in a covered lot or behind a gate needs a mention so the truck can reach it.
  4. Leave the upfit. Shelving, partitions and ladder racks can stay. If the seats or the catalytic converter are already gone, tell us; it affects the offer.
  5. Pickup day: title, keys and a photo ID in hand. If a business owns the van, see titled to a business.

Questions people ask

Are there recalls for the ProMaster's rearview camera?
Several. Recall 25V552000 replaces the camera on 2019-2021 vans because cracks in its microprocessor can stop the image from showing. Recall 25V330000 updates security gateway software on 2022-2025 vans, and 26V531000 covers radio software on 2026 models.
My ProMaster with the 3.6 won't shift. Is there a recall?
Recall 20V036000 covers 2014-2019 ProMasters with the 3.6L engine. The transmission shifter cable can separate from the transmission, and dealers replace the cable. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Which ProMaster year has the most complaints?
The 2021, with 118 as of October 10, 2026. The 2023 (96) and 2015 (84) come next. The 2024-2026 vans are too new for their low counts to mean much.
Will you buy a cargo van with shelving or a ladder rack?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and vans as they sit, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Leave the upfit in place and mention it when you ask.
