Selling a junk or non-running Saab 9-2X

Seven of the eight recalls on the Saab 9-2X replace the front passenger air bag inflator. Subaru filed all eight, because the same campaigns cover Subaru Imprezas, Foresters, Bajas and other Subarus.

The 9-2X sold for just two model years, so a dead one is a short story. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You can sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

A Saab wagon from Subaru's recall files

EPA lists one version, the 9-2x Wagon AWD, for 2005 and 2006. The recall notices name Subaru as the company recalling it, alongside its own cars, and say Subaru notifies Subaru owners while General Motors notifies Saab owners. Wikipedia's "Saab 9-2" page is about a different car, a small model proposed in 2010 and cancelled by the bankruptcy, which lists the 9-2X as its predecessor.

The 2005 carries almost every complaint

NHTSA's file holds 121 complaints on the 9-2X as of October 10, 2026, and 111 of them are on the 2005. The 2006 has 10. Newer years usually have had less time to draw reports, but here the gap is one model year, and the file doesn't explain the rest.

Model yearComplaintsCrashesFiresRecall campaignsNamed most (count)
2005111114Air bags (45), fuel/propulsion system (24), gasoline fuel system (11)
200610117Air bags (7), exterior lighting (2)

One campaign can cover both years, so the recall column adds to more than 8.

Passenger air bag inflators

Air bags are named in 52 of the 121 complaints. The recalls on them are 15V323 (2005), 16V358, 16V359, 17V016 and 20V002 (2006), and 20V001 and 20V003 (2005-2006). A few of these Saab recalls only apply where the car was sold or registered in particular states. Each listed fix is a new passenger frontal air bag inflator, and 20V001 calls for an alternate inflator. Their vehicle counts, from 62,764 to 432,016, are whole Subaru campaigns, not 9-2X numbers.

Fuel and propulsion

On the 2005, 24 complaints name the fuel/propulsion system and 11 name the gasoline fuel system. None of the eight recalls covers either.

Rusting front control arms

Recall 11V464 has dealers inspect how badly the front lower control arms have corroded on 2005-2006 9-2Xs. Its 318,215 vehicles include 2002-2007 Imprezas and 2003-2008 Foresters. Suspension shows up in 10 complaints.

Fix it, or sell it?

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. A 9-2X can sit in several inflator campaigns at once.
  2. Clunking from the front end? Rusted control arms are a recall topic on this car. See broken suspension.
  3. Engine or fuel trouble on a 2005? Price the fix, then check what running 9-2X wagons are listed for. See a repair that outweighs the wagon.

Selling a 9-2X whole

  1. Jot down the VIN and mileage, what went wrong, and whether it still starts.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where the wagon is and if any wheel is stuck; all four are driven, so it matters for loading. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Keep it whole. Don't remove the converter or the wheels, and mention anything already gone.
  5. Have the title and an ID at pickup. No title? See selling with no title.

Questions people ask

Is the 9-2X the same car as the Saab 9-2 on Wikipedia?
No. Wikipedia's Saab 9-2 article covers a small car proposed in 2010 under Spyker and cancelled by the bankruptcy. It lists the 9-2X as its predecessor. This page is about the 9-2X wagon sold for the 2005 and 2006 model years.
How do I know if my 9-2X's air bag inflator was replaced?
Put the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls. The recall notices say General Motors notifies Saab owners and dealers replace the passenger inflator, and seven campaigns cover the 9-2X, so one car can show more than one.
Will you buy a 9-2X with a blown engine?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits.
