Selling a broken or junk Saab 9-3
Of 1,406 NHTSA complaints about the Saab 9-3, 368 point to air bags, more than any other part. Of those, 285 are filed against the 2006-2011 cars, the same years a 2016 recall covers for a new driver air bag inflator.

Two generations of 9-3
These Saab totals come straight from NHTSA owner complaints, checked October 10, 2026. Every one is a single owner's account, not a ruling on the car.
| Generation | Model years here | Engines (Wikipedia) | Complaints | Named most |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| First (YS3D) | 1999-2002 | 2.0 B204, B205 and B205R four-cylinders | 271 | Electrical system, air bags, engine cooling |
| Second (YS3F) | 2003-2012 | 1.8 Z18XE, 2.0 B207E and B207L turbo fours | 1,135 | Air bags, seat belts, suspension |
Wikipedia dates the first generation 1998-2003 and the second 2003-2014, so 2003 sits on the line. Nine of the 17 recall campaigns start in the first-generation years and eight in the second.
1999-2002: ignition modules and fuel line tabs
The electrical system tops the complaint list on every one of these years: 24 complaints on the 1999, 22 on the 2000, 30 on the 2001 and 13 on the 2002. Recall 05V399 fits that picture. This one reaches 2000-2002 cars fitted with the B205, B235 or B308 engine. A transistor in the ignition discharge module could run hot and fail. Dealers swap any module built before the revised QP3 version. The campaign counts 103,202 vehicles, and the 9-5 shares it, so that number is not the 9-3's alone.
Fuel lines are the other thread. Three separate campaigns (06V126, 04V557 and 07V087) deal with fuel pump retaining tabs damaged at the factory, and the fix is a bracket that holds the lines even if the plastic tabs break. On the 2001, 19 of 83 complaints name the gasoline fuel system.
Wikipedia notes these cars used the Saab H engine and that the 9-5 and first-generation 9-3 were the last Saabs with that all-Saab 16-valve design.
2003-2012: seat belts, brakes and air bags
No year draws more complaints than the 2003, with 212. The electrical system (38), suspension (37) and engine cooling (23) top its list. Recall 04V540 covers 2003 cars whose engine management software could cause hesitation or stalling.
The 2004 has 207 complaints, and 76 of them name the seat belts. Three campaigns target belt retractors: 04V226 on 2003-2004 Sport Sedans, 10V043 on 2004 sedans whose front belts could stop retracting, and 14V318 on 2004-2011 convertibles whose driver's retractor could break. A fourth, 03V514, checks a front seat backrest lock on the 2004.
Suspension shows up again and again: 51 complaints on the 2004, 29 on the 2005 and 22 on the 2007. Recall 05V236 replaced a brake booster check valve on 2003-2005 Sport Sedans and convertibles that could give out from heat, and the recall warns of a sudden loss of power braking.
From 2006 on, air bags lead: 85 complaints on the 2006, 65 on the 2007, 71 on the 2008. Recall 16V063 replaces the driver's frontal air bag inflator; its 113,716-vehicle count also covers the 9-5 and some Saturns. The 2008 stands out for another reason, with 62 complaints naming the engine. Recall 11V015 replaced fuel pumps on 2010-2011 cars built June through December 2010.
NHTSA complaints by model year
| Model year | Complaints | Fires | Recall campaigns | Top component (count) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1999 | 80 | 1 | 3 | Electrical system (24) |
| 2000 | 62 | 2 | 3 | Electrical system (22) |
| 2001 | 83 | 1 | 4 | Electrical system (30) |
| 2002 | 46 | 4 | 4 | Electrical system (13) |
| 2003 | 212 | 6 | 4 | Electrical system (38) |
| 2004 | 207 | 2 | 5 | Seat belts (76) |
| 2005 | 95 | 2 | 2 | Suspension (29) |
| 2006 | 179 | 3 | 2 | Air bags (85) |
| 2007 | 155 | 5 | 2 | Air bags (65) |
| 2008 | 184 | 1 | 2 | Air bags (71) |
| 2009 | 43 | 0 | 2 | Air bags (17) |
| 2010 | 30 | 0 | 3 | Air bags (22) |
| 2011 | 30 | 0 | 3 | Air bags (25) |
The 2012 has no complaints in the file. Two complaints report a death, one on the 2001 and one on the 2008. Lots of 9-3 recalls reach across two or more model years, so that column sums to over 17.
Repair it or sell it?
- Run the VIN first. NHTSA's recall lookup shows whether the air bag inflator, belt retractor or ignition module work was ever done.
- Early car with electrical gremlins? On a 2000-2002, ask whether the ignition module recall (05V399) was done. Our electrical problems guide covers how to weigh it.
- 2008 with a bad engine? That year draws more engine complaints than any other 9-3. See blown engine.
- Get a written repair quote, then compare it with asking prices for a running 9-3 from the same year. When the bill eats most of that, our guide on repair bills bigger than the car lays out the choice.
Selling your 9-3 whole
- Know which 9-3 you have. Sedan, SportCombi wagon or convertible, front-wheel drive or AWD, and the year. It's on the title and the registration.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot. A convertible with the top stuck down, a wagon on flat tires, a sedan in a garage: the truck can meet it there, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Mention it if the car won't roll.
- Leave everything on. Don't pull the turbo, the wheels or the catalytic converter first. Tell us about anything already missing.
- Have the title ready at pickup, with a photo ID. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which Saab 9-3 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2003 leads with 212 owner complaints in NHTSA's data, counted October 10, 2026. Next come the 2004 (207), 2008 (184) and 2006 (179). The 2009-2011 cars sit at 30 to 43 apiece; those late cars simply had less time on the road before this count.
- Does the driver air bag inflator recall cover my Saab 9-3?
- If it is a 2006-2011, it may be. Recall 16V063 covers 9-3s built May 31, 2002 to February 15, 2011, and the listed fix is a new driver frontal air bag inflator. Run the Saab's VIN through nhtsa.gov/recalls and it will show whether a dealer did it.
- Will you buy a 9-3 that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, sedans, SportCombi wagons and convertibles alike, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us the year, the body style and what's wrong when you ask for an offer.
- Should I pull the top, the wheels or the turbo first?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. If the turbo or a wheel was pulled already, mention it in your offer request, since a 9-3 with parts gone is priced differently.
