Selling a junk or non-running Scion xB

Air bags lead the Scion xB's complaint file by a wide margin. Owners have filed 1,048 complaints with NHTSA about the xB, counted as of October 10, 2026, and 336 of them name the air bags. Five of the xB's 15 recall campaigns deal with the front passenger air bag inflator, and together they reach every model year from 2008 to 2015.

What owners reported, generation by generation

The xB was one of the two cars Scion launched with, alongside the xA, and it ran from the 2004 to the 2015 model year in two generations. There's also one xB complaint in NHTSA's file under the 2003 model year and three under 2007.

First generation (XP30): the 1.5-liter box

Built in Toyota, Aichi, Japan, from June 2003 to December 2006. The first xB is a subcompact on Toyota's NBC platform, shared with the xA, with a 1.5 L 1NZ-FE four and a 4-speed auto or 5-speed manual.

The 2006 is the heavy year here: 253 complaints, and 144 of them are filed under visibility. Vehicle speed control comes next on the 2006, with 22. Two recalls on 2006-2007 cars cover cruise control modules made by Rostra Precision Controls and installed by Gulf States Toyota and Southeast Toyota dealers (07V030 and 07V048). Those campaigns count 1,372 and 716 vehicles, whole-campaign counts that may include other models. On the 2005, structure tops the list with 21 of 92 complaints.

Second generation (E150): the 2.4-liter years

Production ran from 2007 to 2015 at two Japanese plants: Kanegasaki in Iwate (Kanto Auto Works) and Toyota's Takaoka plant in Aichi. The car moved up to the compact class on the New MC platform. Wikipedia lists this xB with a 2.4 L 2AZ-FE four, and owners got either a 5-speed manual or the 4-speed U241E automatic. The 1.5 and 1.8 engines also listed there belong to the Japanese Corolla Rumion.

The 2008 has more complaints than any other xB year: 339. Air bags account for 132 of them, visibility 41 and the engine 31. The 2009 follows with 140, and 73 of those name the air bags. Air bags are listed first, or tied for first, every year from 2008 through 2014.

Toyota's passenger inflator recalls on the xB came in five waves between 2016 and 2019: 16V340, 17V006, 18V024, 19V005 and 19V741. Each campaign also covers other Toyota or Lexus models, so their vehicle counts, from 577,875 up to 1,754,517, are not xB-only numbers.

The power window master switch is the other big one: 12V491 for 2008-2009 cars and 15V689 for 2009-2011, both filed under visibility. Those campaigns cover 2,519,424 and 1,814,284 vehicles across the Camry, Corolla, Highlander and other Toyotas.

The rest are smaller. Recall 08V451 counts 67 vehicles: 2008-2009 xBs from Southeast Toyota with the sports grill option, plus several radiator grills sold as parts. Recall 14V828 has dealers tighten bolts on accessories Southeast Toyota installed on 2014-2015 cars. Four more are label campaigns that give owners a corrected tire or load sticker.

Wikipedia notes that IIHS named the second-generation xB a Top Safety Pick six years in a row.

xB complaints and recalls, year by year

Every Scion xB count here came out of NHTSA's complaint records, pulled October 10, 2026. An xB recall is tallied in every model year it lists, so a single campaign may sit in several rows. The second-generation xB is newer, so its owners have had a shorter run to send reports.

Across all years, the complaints report 102 crashes, 21 fires, 76 injuries and 2 deaths, and 31 say the car had to be towed.

Repair it or let it go?

  1. Check the xB VIN first on NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2008-2015 xB, an open passenger inflator recall is the one to ask a Toyota dealer about.
  2. Air bags already went off? A crash that fired the bags often costs more to put right than an older xB is worth. See airbags deployed.
  3. Engine trouble? The engine is named in 71 complaints. If yours is done, blown engine walks through the choice.
  4. Rust or a failed inspection? Structure is named in 59 complaints. See failed inspection or rust.

Then hold the written quote up to what a running xB with close miles sells for. When the quote gets close, repairs cost more than it's worth explains the math.

Selling the xB whole

  1. Jot down a few things: your xB's VIN, its odometer reading, known faults, and if it rolls.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's parked: driveway, street, garage or a repair lot, and whether all four wheels are on. That tells the driver what truck to bring. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't strip the xB. Its catalytic converter, wheels and battery should stay on, and tell us about any parts already gone.
  5. When our truck arrives, hand over the xB title and show the driver your photo ID. Plate rules depend on the state; see after you sell.

Questions people ask

Which Scion xB year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2008, with 339 complaints as of October 10, 2026. The 2006 is next with 253 and the 2009 with 140. A 2014 or 2015 xB has been driven fewer years than a 2008, so part of its low count is just less time out.
Could my xB have an open air bag recall?
If it is a 2008 through 2015, check. Five campaigns filed under the front passenger air bag inflator (16V340, 17V006, 18V024, 19V005 and 19V741) together reach every xB model year from 2008 to 2015. Look up your xB VIN on nhtsa.gov/recalls, then ask a Toyota dealer about any open item.
Is a 2005 xB the same car as a 2010 xB?
No. The first generation (built 2003-2006) is a subcompact with a 1.5-liter four. The second generation (built 2007-2015) moved up to the compact class, and Wikipedia lists a 2.4-liter 2AZ-FE four for it.
Will you buy an xB that doesn't start?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Say what ails your xB, if it rolls, and where it sits.
