One generation, 2008-2014

The xD replaced the xA. It is a subcompact on the Toyota B platform, related to the Yaris sedan, with a 96.9-inch wheelbase. Each Scion xD got the same 1.8 L 2ZR-FE four. Owners shifted it by hand with five speeds or let a four-speed automatic do it. Kanto Auto Works built it at Kanegasaki, Iwate, from 2007 to 2012, and Toyota Motor East Japan built it at Ohira, Miyagi, from 2012 to 2014. Scion dropped the xD for the 2015 model year.

2008-2010: brakes, windows and a seat rail

The 2008 has 67 complaints: 18 under service brakes, 9 under hydraulic brakes and 6 under air bags. Recall 09V338 is the brake campaign. It covers 2008-2009 xDs, along with 2009-2010 Corollas and Corolla Matrixes with the 1.8-liter engine, originally sold in or registered in certain states, among them Alaska, Colorado and Idaho. Dealers install a newly designed intake air connector that moves the brake system vacuum port. The 95,705-vehicle count covers the Corollas too.

The 2009 has 23 complaints, led by the electrical system (7). Two power window master switch campaigns reach these years: 12V491 for 2008-2009 and 15V689 for 2009-2010. These two are giant Toyota recalls, 2,519,424 and 1,814,284 vehicles, spanning the Camry, Corolla and more.

Recall 14V169 covers 2008-2010 xDs built from April 4, 2007 to May 12, 2010, along with 2006-2010 Yaris cars. Dealers inspect a seat rail and replace it if needed. Its count of 472,388 covers the whole campaign, Yaris included, not the xD alone.

The 2010 has 12 complaints, with speed control and air bags at 2 each.

2011-2014: 14 complaints in four years

The later cars are quiet in the file, but a few entries stand out. The 5 complaints on the 2012 report 2 fires and 10 injuries. The 4 complaints on the 2014 report 3 fires, and 3 of them name the engine. The last xD years are newer, so owners have had a shorter stretch to report. One recall shows up, 13V123, a label fix on the 2011.

Fix the xD, or sell it?

• Check xD recalls first by running the VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2008-2009, look for 09V338 and ask a Toyota dealer about anything open.
• Brakes gone? Brakes alone rarely total a car, but seized calipers plus rotors and lines on an old xD add up. Bad or seized brakes helps you weigh it.

How to sell the xD whole

1. Note the VIN, mileage and what's wrong, including whether the brakes hold.
2. Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
3. Say where the xD is and whether it rolls. A car whose brakes have seized needs a different truck. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
4. Leave it complete, catalytic converter and wheels included, and mention anything missing.
