Selling a junk or dead car in Simpsonville
Simpsonville gives a broken car 30 days. Under Section 18-61, any vehicle that is "wrecked, dismantled, partially dismantled, inoperative, or discarded, and remains so for a period of 30 days, shall be deemed abandoned." After that it may not sit anywhere in the city limits outside an enclosed building. If the month is running out, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

What Section 18-61 bans
The rule is wide. It is unlawful to "abandon, accumulate or place or deposit" derelict cars or junk "on any street, alleyway, or sidewalk, or anywhere within the corporate limits of the city, other than within an enclosed building." That includes "old vehicles or parts of old automobiles." The only routes around it:
- council approval, which the section allows for
- a commercial garage, wrecker or storage facility, stored under the zoning ordinance
A Simpsonville driveway or back lawn is not on that list.
No cover clause here
Mauldin, 4.5 miles up the road, lets an unplated car stay on a driveway under a fitted cover. The Simpsonville sections we read do not. Section 18-37 names as a nuisance "any motor vehicle that is unregistered, inoperable, derelict or abandoned" on a road or "other public or private property, unless such vehicle is stored inside of a building." So in Simpsonville a tarp does not do what the garage does.
If it is parked on the street
A car left where it should not be gets a written notice under Sections 34-84 and 34-88. The fine is $20, "unless otherwise provided." Two lines in those sections matter more than the money:
- A driver who "willfully neglects to answer" the notice is "guilty of contempt of court," whatever happens with the parking charge itself.
- "Proof of ownership of any motor vehicle shall be prima facie evidence that such owner parked the vehicle." Selling the car is how you stop being that owner.
Paperwork through the SCDMV
For Greenville County we looked up the Saluda Dam Road branch, number 15, in Greenville; its line is 864-241-1147. Simpsonville sits about 15 miles southeast of it, as the crow flies.
On a Simpsonville sale, the title's first assignment carries the buyer's identity and address, the lender if one exists, odometer miles, what was paid, the date, and both of your signatures. Where the title lacks a spot for the price, pair it with a bill of sale. Then tell the SCDMV on Form 416. Plates in this state stay with the seller: fit yours to a car you own next, or return it on Form 452 and drop the coverage.
Was the car an insurance write-off? South Carolina's salvage rule applies when fixing it would run to 75% or more of fair market value, though cars worth $2,000 or under fall outside it. A lost title costs $15 to replace; the no-title guide covers the state's affirming-form route for old, engineless cars.

Questions people ask
- What is the Simpsonville deadline for a wrecked car at home?
- Thirty days. Section 18-61 deems a car abandoned once it has been wrecked, dismantled, inoperative or discarded for that long, and keeping one outside an enclosed building anywhere in the city is then unlawful unless council approves.
- Will a fitted cover satisfy Simpsonville code?
- Not in the sections we read. Section 18-37 makes an unregistered or inoperable car a nuisance "unless such vehicle is stored inside of a building."
- What does a Simpsonville parking notice cost?
- Section 34-84 sets $20 unless another amount is provided. Ignoring the notice on purpose is contempt of court, and owning the car counts as evidence you parked it.
- How far is the Saluda Dam Road SCDMV branch from Simpsonville?
- Roughly 15 miles northwest of central Simpsonville, measured as the crow flies.
