Selling a damaged or dead Subaru Ascent

The Ascent's first model year carries most of its record. Owners have filed 1,034 complaints with NHTSA about the Ascent, counted as of October 10, 2026, and 442 of them are on the 2019. Add the 2020's 322 and those two years hold 764, nearly three in four. The 2019 also has nine of the Ascent's 13 recall campaigns.

One generation, two looks

Wikipedia lists one generation, in production since 2018 at Subaru of Indiana in Lafayette. Every Ascent uses the 2.4-liter FA24F turbo flat-four and the TR690 Lineartronic CVT. It replaced the Tribeca. In 2023 it got a facelift with a new front end, LED headlights and a vertical 11.6-inch touchscreen.

2019-2020: power train and electrical complaints

Electrical system is the top component on both years: 153 of the 2019's complaints and 95 of the 2020's. Power train is second, with 72 and 50.

The transmission recalls line up with that. Recall 19V855000 reprogrammed the transmission control unit on 2019 Ascents whose hydraulic pressure sensor may misread, and replaced the sensor harness on some; the campaign lists 76,842 vehicles. Recall 21V955000 is about a control unit programming mistake. It can let the clutch engage before the drive chain is ready. That 198,255-vehicle campaign includes 2020 Legacys and Outbacks.

Other first-year recalls cover the body and driveline. Recall 18V508000 inspected 293 Ascents that may have been missing B-pillar spot welds. Recall 19V519000 replaced driveshafts on 166 SUVs whose center support bolts could loosen. The 2019-2020 cars also share low pressure fuel pump recalls 20V218000 and 21V587000, and 2020 tie rod recall 21V954000 covered 1,305 vehicles.

The heater ground bolt

Recall 22V907000 reaches every model year from 2019 to 2022. The ground bolt for the positive temperature coefficient (PTC) heater may not have been fastened right. Until a dealer fixes it, NHTSA's notice tells owners to park away from structures and not leave the engine running unattended. The campaign lists 271,694 vehicles.

2023 on: brakes, tires and visibility

The facelifted cars have far fewer complaints, and they've had less time to collect them. Service brakes lead the 2023 with 8 of 45. On the 2024, visibility leads with 22 of 50. Recall 23V258000 replaced all four tires on 4,409 2023 Ascents with 20-inch wheels because the tire bead may have been damaged during mounting. Recall 23V647000 fixed loose driveshaft center support bolts again, this time on 2023 Ascents, Outbacks, Legacys and Imprezas. Under recall 26V436000, 2019-2026 Ascent owners get a corrected axle weight label by mail. The 541,237 vehicles in it also take in Foresters and Crosstrek hybrids.

Ascent complaints and recalls by model year

Is it worth repairing?

Compare the quote with what a running Ascent of the same year and mileage brings. When the repair lands near that number, selling it as is tends to make more sense.

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. Transmission recalls 19V855000 and 21V955000 both reprogram the control unit, and a Subaru dealer does open recalls at no cost.
  2. CVT slipping or the car won't move? Get the diagnosis in writing and read failing CVT.
  3. Electrical faults that come and go? See electrical problems before replacing parts one by one.
  4. Weighing it up? Repairs cost more than it is worth walks through the numbers.

How to sell your Ascent whole

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and trim, and list what's wrong.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it sits and if the wheels still turn. The Ascent is a big, heavy SUV, so mention tight driveways or a dead CVT that keeps it from rolling.
  4. Keep everything on it, the wheels and converter too. Let us know if any part is already gone.
  5. At Ascent pickup, you sign over the title and the driver checks your ID. See after you sell for plates and insurance, or junk truck or SUV for more on larger vehicles.

More Subarus: the Tribeca, Outback, Forester and every Subaru model.

Questions people ask

Which Ascent model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2019, the first year, with 442 as of October 10, 2026. The 2020 follows with 322. The 2023-2026 numbers are young and will probably climb as those SUVs log more time with owners.
What was the Ascent spot weld recall?
Recall 18V508000 covered 293 2019 Ascents that may have been missing spot welds on or around the B-pillar, which weakens the body. Dealers inspected each one for the missing welds.
Is there a park-outside recall on the Ascent?
Yes. Recall 22V907000 covers 2019-2022 Ascents whose heater ground bolt may not have been fastened right. Owners are asked to park clear of buildings, and never leave the SUV running with no one around, until it's repaired.
Will you buy an Ascent with a failed transmission?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, SUVs included. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
