Selling a damaged or dead Tesla Model 3
Nearly a quarter of all owner complaints about the Model 3 sit on one model year. The 2018 has 1,031 of the 4,349 complaints owners filed with NHTSA on 2017-2026 cars (tally taken October 10, 2026). Its most-named parts were the suspension (158), air bags (122) and the electrical system (109).

What owners reported, by build period
Wikipedia lists the Model 3 in production since 2017 at Fremont, California, and Gigafactory Shanghai. The Model 3 has either a single rear motor driving the back wheels or a motor at each end for all-wheel drive, and each setup uses a single-speed fixed transmission. The Model 3 never had separate engine generations, so we group its years below by their complaint and recall records.
2017-2020: the first cars, and the camera harness
These four years hold 2,125 complaints. Air bags show up among the three most-named components on the 2017, 2018 and 2019. On the 2018, suspension tops the list.
Recall 21V00D000, reported December 21, 2021, covers every 2017-2020 Model 3. Opening and closing the trunk lid can damage the rearview camera's cable harness. Tesla Service inspects the car and fits a guide protector and a new harness as needed, free of charge. The campaign counts 356,309 vehicles. Performance cars from 2018 to 2022 had their own recall, 22V263000, because the speed unit could drop off the speedometer in Track Mode. That campaign lists 48,184 vehicles.
Wikipedia records one long-term test: Car and Driver's Model 3 had a rear inverter short in December 2019, after 5,286 miles, while parked. That is one car, not a pattern in the complaint data.
2021-2023: forward collision avoidance takes over
On these years, forward collision avoidance is the top complaint component every time: 236 on the 2021, 299 on the 2022 and 97 on the 2023. Service brakes came second on the 2021 (104) and 2022 (137). Wikipedia notes that 2021 Model 3s built on or after April 27, 2021 had changed Forward Collision Warning and Automatic Emergency Braking features, which led to lower Consumer Reports and IIHS scores.
Steering climbs to second on the 2023, with 72 complaints. Recall 25V092000 covers certain 2023 Model 3 and Model Y cars running software older than 2023.38.4: the power steering assist circuit board can be overstressed. Tesla fixed it with a free over-the-air (OTA) update. The 376,241 vehicles in that campaign include Model Ys.
Two other campaigns are not just Model 3 numbers. The Autosteer recall, 23V838000, lists 2,031,220 vehicles across the Model S, X, 3 and Y. The taillight recall, 22V844000, covers the 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y, 321,628 vehicles in all.
2024-2026: newer cars, fewer complaints so far
The 2024 has 219 complaints, the 2025 has 117 and the 2026 has 28. A car this young simply hasn't been on the road long enough to pile up reports. Steering appears again among the top three on the 2025 and 2026.
Recall 25V002000 covers certain 2024-2025 Model 3 cars, along with other Tesla models: the car computer's circuit board can short, and the rearview camera image can be lost. The fix is a free software update. Per Wikipedia, computers that were already damaged had to be replaced under warranty. The 239,382-vehicle count covers every model in that campaign. The tire pressure warning recall, 24V935000, reaches back to 2017 Model 3s; its 696,281 vehicles include the Model Y and the 2024 Cybertruck.
Complaints and recalls by model year
Tallied from the NHTSA complaint download dated October 10, 2026. Each complaint is an owner's own account; NHTSA does not check them one by one. The recall column counts campaigns that list that year. One campaign can cover many years, so the column does not add up to 36.

Repair it or sell it?
Weigh the repair quote against what the same Model 3 would sell for once it's fixed. When the quote gets close, selling it as it sits usually wins.
- Clear recalls first. Most Model 3 recalls listed here are free software updates. The camera harness recall on 2017-2020 cars needs a Tesla Service visit. Run your VIN at NHTSA's lookup, and see open recall if you'd rather sell with one still open.
- Battery or drive unit trouble? Ask for the diagnosis on paper and price it against running Model 3s of your year and mileage. The EV battery guide walks through that choice.
- Crash damage? The 2018 and 2023 have the most complaints that report a crash. If an insurer has written yours off, see insurer totaled it.
- Quote higher than the car? Read repairs cost more than it is worth.
Selling your Model 3 whole
- Get ready: keep your Model 3's VIN and mileage close, jot down what's wrong, and see if the screen comes on and the wheels roll.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us the spot: a garage, a driveway, the curb or a body shop all work for a Model 3. That's where our truck loads it, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it whole. The Model 3 battery pack, wheels and seats should stay put. If something has been taken out, mention it.
- Clear your data. The touchscreen holds your account, addresses and phone pairings; see wipe your data.
- At pickup, our driver needs to see your Model 3 title and your photo ID. Plates follow state rules; after you sell explains them. No title? Start with selling with no title.
The Model Y shares much of this car's hardware. The Model S, Model X and Cybertruck have their own pages, and the Tesla page lists them all.
Questions people ask
- Which Model 3 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2018, with 1,031 on NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. Next come the 2022 (766), the 2021 (666) and the 2019 (617). A 2024-2026 Model 3 has spent fewer months on the road, so its low count is not the full picture yet.
- Is my 2017-2020 Model 3 part of the rearview camera recall?
- Recall 21V00D000 lists all 2017-2020 Model 3 cars. Opening and closing the trunk lid can damage the camera's cable harness, so the camera image may not show. Tesla Service inspects the car and installs a guide protector and a new harness as needed, free of charge. To learn if your Model 3 still has this recall open, enter its VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Do you take a Model 3 that has been wrecked or is completely dead?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. When you ask about your Model 3, mention where it is parked.
- Do I have to take anything off the Model 3 first?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits, battery and wheels included. Missing parts change what we offer for a Model 3, so let us know early if any are gone.
