Sell a dead or junk car in DeSoto

DeSoto's junk article names paperwork, not just damage. One test on its list is having no current plate or valid inspection certificate. A junked car that the public can see is a nuisance under the same article. If your car is stuck there, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

DeSoto's three tests

Texas law lets cities set their own junk-car steps, and DeSoto may have rules beyond those described here. Its article lists three tests for a self-propelled vehicle, joined by "or":

  1. lacking a current plate, or lacking a valid inspection certificate;
  2. wrecked, dismantled or discarded;
  3. inoperable beyond 72 hours in a row on DeSoto public property, or for more than 30 days on a private DeSoto lot.

The article does not spell out how the three fit together, so ask code enforcement before you count on any one of them. If people passing on a public way can see a junked car, DeSoto declares the car a public nuisance; maintaining it is an offense.

The city's Violations page is plainer. DeSoto calls a car inoperable when it is wrecked, dismantled, on flat tires, out of date on registration or inspection, or up on jacks. Tarps, it says, are not screening. DeSoto wants vehicles out of front and side yards, parked on a driveway or other improved surface.

DeSoto's article does allow screening that works. A vehicle or part kept tidy, posing no health hazard, and screened from ordinary view by a fence or by quick-growing trees and shrubs is exempt.

Notice and hearing in DeSoto

DeSoto mails at least ten days' notice, certified, five-day return requested. DeSoto addresses it to the owner of record, each lienholder, and the DeSoto property's owner or occupant. You have the ten days to remove the car, and any hearing request must be filed within them. With a timely request, the municipal court judge sets the hearing for day 11 or later, and you carry the burden of showing it runs.

Fines come from DeSoto's general penalty section: as much as $500, or $2,000 where DeSoto applies it to fire-safety, zoning, health and sanitation rules. Every day counts separately. On conviction, the DeSoto court orders the car removed.

Authorized city staff may then come onto the property to identify it and send it to a motor vehicle demolisher, a scrapyard or a suitable city site. Once the judge declares it a nuisance, it can never be restored to running order, and DeSoto tells the state within five days of removal.

DeSoto police custody

A car parked unlawfully on public property for over 48 hours is, in DeSoto, an abandoned motor vehicle, and police may take it. Storage charges run from custody day; the first stretch, up to ten days, closes when notice is mailed. Owners and lienholders get until day 20 after notice to reclaim the car by covering towing, preservation and storage. After that, DeSoto treats the owner as surrendering every right and consenting to auction.

Dallas County title office and inspections

DeSoto sits wholly inside Dallas County. Its tax office, 500 Elm Street, Suite 1200, Dallas, is roughly 13 miles north of DeSoto, as the crow flies; (214) 653-7811.

Texas sellers skip the notary. On the DeSoto title, write the sale date and odometer reading, then sign, then give the buyer a 130-U signed by you, price included. Within 30 days, report the sale online or on paper VTR-346, so later tolls and parking tickets follow the buyer, not you. Keep the plates if you want. Putting them on another car of the same class costs nothing at the county office, which issues a fresh sticker.

DeSoto buyers face one inspection question. Dallas County still requires emissions testing, and registration requires a passing emissions result on file. Statewide, noncommercial cars lost the yearly safety check on January 1, 2025. Texas also has a no-title path: a used-parts recycler can take a car that is 13+ years old and unregistered for seven years.

Questions people ask

What counts as inoperable on DeSoto's violations page?
Wrecked, dismantled, on flat tires, expired in registration or inspection, or on jacks. The same page says tarps are not screening.
Can a dead car sit on my DeSoto lawn?
The city says vehicles belong off the front and side yards, on a driveway or other improved surface.
Where do DeSoto code complaints go?
To the Action Center, 972-274-CITY. The Code Enforcement office, 714 E. Beltline Rd., lists 469-658-3075, open 8 to 5 on weekdays and 8 to 5 on Saturday.
Will my DeSoto buyer ask about an emissions test?
Possibly. Dallas County still tests emissions, and registering the car requires a passing result on file, so TxDMV suggests asking the seller for the latest Vehicle Inspection Report. Texas dropped the safety inspection for noncommercial cars on January 1, 2025.
