Selling a dead or junk car in Duncanville
Duncanville has a one-day rule that catches dead cars long before the junk-car clock does. Its residential open-storage section, 12-92, lists "unused, discarded and/or inoperable motor vehicles" among the things that become a nuisance once they sit outside for more than a day without a break. So last week's breakdown, still parked by the garage door, is already a code issue. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Three overlapping Duncanville rules
Open storage (sections 12-91 and 12-92). "Open storage" means placing something outside for a continuous stretch longer than one day. Broken-down cars are on that list beside old stoves and refrigerators.
The junked-vehicle article (sections 12-35 to 12-39). Duncanville's junked vehicle has an engine, lacks an unexpired plate or registration insignia, and is either wrecked, picked apart or abandoned, or has been dead for a month (30 days) on private property. A public street allows only 72 hours. Section 12-38 makes it a nuisance if it carries an expired plate, or none, and anyone on a street or other public spot could see it, whatever the season. The procedure skips a car stored completely inside a building and out of view from both the road and the houses around it.
Too many vehicles (section 12-250). No more than five vehicles may stay on a residential lot past 12 hours in a row, counting boats, trailers and campers, whether or not anyone can see them. Cars in a closed garage or fully screened from view are a defense. A violation carries a fine of as much as $500.
The junked-vehicle notice
The city must send written notice more than ten days before it acts. It is either delivered by hand or mailed certified (five-day return), going to the car's last known owner, every lienholder on record, and the person who owns or lives at the address. With no owner address, it can be put on the car. It gives you 10 days from delivery or mailing to get the car off the property, and you may ask for a hearing before those days run out.
A municipal judge must hold a public hearing before the city removes anything. If the property owner asks for one, it can't come before the 11th day after service, and the burden of proving the car runs falls on the owner. Moving the car within the city does not end the case.
Penalties stack. The fine can reach $200 for each offense, every day is a new one, and the court orders the car removed. Ignoring that order is a second misdemeanor with the same fine. Once the city hauls a car to a scrap yard or demolisher, it can't be rebuilt, and is reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety by the fifth day.
Duncanville streets and the impound lot
Section 19-107.1 gives an unattended car 30 days in a row on a city street before it crosses the line. After that the car counts as illegally parked and abandoned under state law. A car sitting in a driveway next to private property, not blocking the road or sidewalk, has a defense.
Police may take an abandoned car from public or private land. Within ten days, a certified letter goes out to the car's owner and any lienholders. Owners get until the 20th day after that letter to pay what is owed for the tow, preservation and storage. If no one pays, the car goes to public auction. Dallas County title steps
Dallas County's tax assessor-collector is at 500 Elm Street, Suite 1200, in downtown Dallas, roughly 11 miles northeast of Duncanville as the crow flies (call (214) 653-7811). In a private sale, that trip belongs to the buyer.
From you, the buyer needs the signed title with the odometer reading and sale date, and Form 130-U signed with the agreed price. Texas does not ask for a notary. Then, before a month is out, file the transfer notice (Vehicle Transfer Notification) with TxDMV. That filing is your protection against the buyer's tolls and tickets. You may unbolt the plates and keep them for a car of the same class; the county moves them free. The windshield sticker never transfers.
Getting a quote
Use the offer form or dial (877) 421-6008. We need the basics: model year, make, model and odometer, plus two yes-or-no answers: does it start, and do you hold the title? A truck can load it from a Duncanville driveway or carport, or from a repair shop in DeSoto or Cedar Hill. The Texas page explains the statewide rules.
Questions people ask
- How soon is a dead car in a Duncanville yard a code problem?
- Under the residential open-storage rule, section 12-92, "inoperable motor vehicles" left outside for more than a full day (24 straight hours) are on the nuisance list. The separate junked-vehicle rule uses a 30-day clock for cars without a current plate.
- Can I leave a broken car parked on my Duncanville street?
- Not for more than 30 consecutive days. Section 19-107.1 then treats it as illegally parked and abandoned under state law. A car in a driveway that does not block the road or sidewalk is a defense.
- What does a junked-vehicle conviction cost in Duncanville?
- The fine can reach $200 per offense, and every day counts separately. The court also orders the car removed; disobeying that order is another misdemeanor with the same fine.
- Where is a title office near Duncanville?
- Dallas County's tax assessor-collector, Suite 1200 at 500 Elm Street in downtown Dallas, about 11 miles northeast as the crow flies. Its number is (214) 653-7811.
