Sell a dead or junk car in Little Elm

Little Elm can treat a car as junked over paperwork alone. Section 46-60 covers a vehicle that "displays a motor vehicle registration certificate that is at least 30 days expired/invalid," or shows none at all. Parked in view with lapsed tags, a running car can face the same process as a wreck. If yours is beyond fixing, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits; pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Four triggers in Section 46-60

  • registration 30 days expired or invalid, or none displayed
  • "wrecked, dismantled, or partially dismantled, or discarded"
  • dead longer than 72 consecutive hours on Little Elm streets or other public property
  • inoperable past 30 days on private property

Section 46-71 makes a junked car a public nuisance if it can be spotted in any season by people on a public way. Little Elm's Section 46-72 sets the penalty: a misdemeanor, fine capped at $200. A car parked wholly indoors, invisible to the street and to neighbors, is outside these rules. Section 46-76 adds that a car cover is not screening.

Little Elm's driveway rule

Section 98-104 is short and strict: "No vehicle shall be parked or stored between the building and street frontage, unless parked on the driveway." Anything off the driveway belongs in the rear yard, "enclosed by a permitted fence, generally screened from public view," and kept ten feet or more from neighboring lot lines. The same section bans displaying a car for sale unless it is legally parked on the driveway and is neither junked nor inoperable.

Under Section 46-20, tires, wheels and loose parts have to be screened from the right-of-way too.

On Little Elm streets, five days at nearly one spot in a residential district makes a car "stored." Section 98-104 then treats it as illegally parked on public property and removable under the town's abandoned-vehicle rules.

How a Little Elm case moves

Little Elm's FAQ says staff begin any complaint with personal contact, checking whether a violation exists and asking for a fix. Under Section 46-77 an employee may also issue a warning or a citation before any notice.

The formal notice under Section 46-73 allows at least ten days. Little Elm hand-delivers it or sends it certified, addressed to the registered owner, to each lienholder, and to the owner or tenant of the Little Elm lot. Ask for a hearing inside those ten days. A car still there afterward goes to a public hearing before the municipal court judge, who assumes the car cannot run until someone shows it can.

Section 46.74 then shuts the door: after removal it "shall not be reconstructed or made operable again." Within five days of a removal, Little Elm must send TxDOT notice.

Little Elm impounds

For abandoned cars, Little Elm police mail certified notice within ten days of custody (Section 46-91). An owner or lienholder has until day 20 after that notice to claim the car, settling the towing, preservation and storage bill. Storage fees start the day the car is taken. Miss day 20, and Little Elm treats the car as consented to public auction. Police main and non-emergency line: 214-975-0460. Denton County paperwork from Little Elm

All of Little Elm lies in Denton County. Its tax office, 1505 E. McKinney in Denton, is roughly 11 miles west of Little Elm's center, as the crow flies; phone (940) 349-3500. The buyer has 30 days to title the car there.

On your end, sign the title, writing in the date and the odometer number. Texas wants no notary. Hand the buyer a signed 130-U that lists the price. Then, within the month, file the seller's transfer notice (TxDMV.gov/VTN, or paper VTR-346). A missing title can be replaced with a certified copy on VTR-34, $5.45 in person. Texas also lets a used-parts recycler buy an untitled car if it was built 13 or more years ago and has lacked registration for seven-plus years.

Questions people ask

My car runs, but the registration lapsed. Can Little Elm call it junked?
It can. Section 46-60 includes a self-propelled vehicle whose registration certificate is at least 30 days expired or invalid, or that shows no registration at all. As with the other tests, it matters once the car is visible to the public.
Is front-lawn parking allowed for a dead car in Little Elm?
No. Section 98-104 bars parking or storing any vehicle between the house and the street unless it sits on the driveway. The rest belong in the rear yard behind a permitted fence, generally screened, ten feet or more from neighboring property lines.
Will Little Elm warn me before sending a formal notice?
Usually staff make personal contact first to see whether there is a violation and ask for a fix. Section 46-77 also lets a town employee issue a warning or a citation before a notice goes out.
Where does a Little Elm buyer file the title?
At the Denton County tax office, 1505 E. McKinney in Denton, roughly 11 miles west of Little Elm as the crow flies. The seller's job is the transfer notice, filed online or on paper Form VTR-346.
