Selling a Toyota Camry that won't run
A Camry with a slipping transmission, an engine that drinks oil or a dashboard gone sticky can be sold exactly as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, and you don't have to remove a single part first.

Toyota began selling the Camry here in March 1983, and NHTSA's records run from the 1984 model year through the 2026. That adds up to 20,463 owner complaints and 68 recall campaigns. Here is where they cluster, and which Toyota programs once paid for fixes.
What goes wrong, era by era
1984-1996: belts, door locks and a falling hood
The first Camrys came from Toyota City, Japan. Toyota's Georgetown, Kentucky, plant started building them in May 1988. From 1986 to 1991, seat belts sit at or near the top of each year's complaint list. Recall 89V175 reached 408,225 Camrys from 1987-1989: unbuckling the lap belt a certain way could lock its retractor in the stowed position. Recall 92V135 covered 554,910 Camrys from 1987-1990 whose power door lock computer could fail, weld its own contacts and damage the lock solenoid.
The 1992 is an outlier. It has 565 complaints, more than double either neighbor, and 295 sit under structure. In NHTSA's listing, 325 complaints sent in during 1996 mention the hood: the hydraulic support gives out and the hood drops. We found no recall or Toyota program covering that failure.
Japan-built 1994 Camrys (98V155) and 1995-1998 Camrys (99V307) were recalled because the nut holding the steering wheel on may not have been tightened enough.
1997-2006: sludge and sudden acceleration
Engine sludge hit 1997-2002 Toyotas with the 3.0-liter V6 or the 2.2-liter four. After 3,400 sludge complaints, Toyota extended coverage on those engines in 2002 to eight years with no mileage limit, ConsumerAffairs reported. A 2007 class settlement took in 1997-2001 four-cylinder and 1997-2002 V6 Camrys; claims had to be filed within eight years and 120 days of the original sale. That door closed long ago.
The 2002 opened the fifth generation, a larger sedan on the K platform. It has 1,013 complaints, and 261 involve vehicle speed control; most of them describe unwanted acceleration. Speed control is the top category on every year from 2002 through 2006. The 2002 complaints alone report 272 crashes.
2007-2011: the most complaints of any Camry
The 2007 drew 3,615 complaints, far more than any other year, and two subjects drive it.
Pedals. The 2007-2010 Camry is in both of Toyota's big accelerator recalls: 09V388, where an unsecured or mismatched driver's mat can hold the pedal down, and 10V017, where the pedal itself can turn hard to press, slow to return or stick partway down. Their counts, 4,445,056 and 2,230,661 vehicles, cover whole campaigns that also took in the Avalon, Prius, Corolla, RAV4, Tundra and Lexus models. In a March 2014 agreement with the Justice Department, Toyota admitted it "misled U.S. consumers by concealing and making deceptive statements" about two problems that each caused a type of unintended acceleration. It agreed to pay $1.2 billion.
The dashboard. Structure is the 2007's second-largest category with 377 complaints, and owners mostly describe a dash that cracks, goes tacky or melts. Under program ZE6, Toyota fixed 2007-2011 Camry and Camry Hybrid dashboards with no mileage cap through May 31, 2017, and after that until the car was 10 years past its in-service date.
The engines had programs too. ZE7 covered oil burning on the 2.4-liter four in certain 2007-2009 Camrys and 2007-2011 Camry Hybrids. On the 3.5-liter V6 (2007-2010), Limited Service Campaign 90K replaced a VVT-i oil hose whose rubber section can break down and leak. That offer ended December 31, 2021.
2012-2017: shudder at light throttle
Power train is the top complaint category on the 2012, 2013 and 2014. Limited Service Campaign E03 reprogrammed about 795,000 2012-2014 Camrys for a torque converter shudder under light throttle, between about 25 and 50 mph. If the shudder was still there after that, program ZE5 paid for a new torque converter, extra transmission magnets and updated software: at any mileage until April 30, 2016, then for 8 years or 150,000 miles from first use. By now that has lapsed on nearly every car.
2018-2026: eight speeds, then hybrid only
The 2018 has 774 complaints, led by power train (144). Bulletin T-SB-0152-19 covers 2018-2019 Camrys with the 2.5-liter A25A engine that hesitate when pulling away from a slow roll; dealers update the engine computer. Recall 21V890 covers 227,490 2018-2019 Camrys whose brake vacuum pump can fail and take away braking assist. Recall 18V200 covers 1,730 2018 four-cylinder cars that may have oversized pistons, which can stall the engine. Dealers check piston date codes and replace the engine only on cars that have an affected piston.
From 2025 the Camry is sold in North America only as a hybrid, built in Georgetown. Recall 25V869 covers a loose inverter bolt that can cut drive power (55,405 vehicles, a count that also includes 2026 Corolla Cross Hybrids). Recall 26V511 covers 508,354 Camry Hybrids whose instrument display "may fail during vehicle startup, deactivating the hazard lights, turn signals" and seat belt warnings.
NHTSA's numbers, one generation per row
We summed these from NHTSA's bulk files on October 10, 2026. When a recall reaches across a generation change it lands in both rows, which is why that column sums past 68. The youngest cars have had the fewest years to draw complaints.
| Generation | Model years | Complaints | Busiest year | Recall campaigns |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| V10 | 1984-1986 | 53 | 1986 (32) | 2 |

| XV30 | 2002-2006 | 3,865 | 2002 (1,013) | 11 |
| XV40 | 2007-2011 | 7,441 | 2007 (3,615) | 15 |
| XV50 | 2012-2017 | 2,054 | 2012 (645) | 12 |

Repair it or let it go?
Almost every Toyota program above has passed its end date. For most Camrys, then, the question is whether the repair costs more than the car would be worth running.
- Run the VIN first at NHTSA's recall page. Recall repairs are done by Toyota dealers, and an open one may cover the part that failed.
- Shudder or slipping? Get a written estimate. Our bad transmission guide covers the signs and how to weigh the bill.
- Oil burning or a knocking engine? The 2.4-liter oil-use years and the sludge-era engines are the two patterns in the data. Read blown engine before you spend on one.
- Price the running car. Look up what the same year and mileage sells for nearby, then set the estimate beside it.
Selling the Camry whole
- Gather the VIN, mileage and the problem, plus whether the car rolls and steers.
- Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us the spot: a parking garage, an apartment lot or the back row at a repair shop. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave it all on. Keep the battery, converter, wheels and, on a hybrid, the high-voltage pack. If something is already off the car, tell us, because the offer depends on it.
- Sign over the title and hand over the keys. No title? See selling without one. Plate rules are on after you sell.

Questions people ask
- Which Camry model years have the most complaints filed with NHTSA?
- The 2007, with 3,615 as of October 10, 2026. It is followed by the 2009 (1,412), the 2008 (1,178) and the 2002 (1,013). Hundreds describe the dashboard, and 248 structure complaints arrived in 2014 alone.
- Will Toyota still fix a melting dashboard on my 2007-2011 Camry?
- Very likely not. Program ZE6 covered those dashboards at any mileage until May 31, 2017, and after that for 10 years from the date the car was first put in service. On a car first sold in 2011, that ran out in 2021. A Toyota dealer can look up your VIN to be sure.
- My 2007-2009 four-cylinder Camry burns oil. Is there still coverage?
- Program ZE7 covered oil consumption on the 2.4-liter engine in certain 2007-2009 Camrys and 2007-2011 Camry Hybrids. It paid at any mileage until October 31, 2016. Later claims had a cap: the 10th anniversary of first use or 150,000 miles, whichever arrived sooner. That has now passed for nearly every car, but a dealer can check the VIN.
- Can I sell a Camry Hybrid with a dead hybrid system?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, hybrids included. Leave the battery pack and inverter in place, say the car won't go into Ready if that is what happens, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
