Selling a broken-down or junk Toyota RAV4
A RAV4 with a failed engine, a rusted rear suspension arm or crash damage can still be sold, and you don't have to fix it or strip it first. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Toyota has sold the RAV4 here since early 1996, and its trouble spots move from one generation to the next. Find your model year below before you decide what the car is worth to you.
Where the RAV4's problems cluster
The tallies below use NHTSA's October 10, 2026 download, and every complaint in them is an owner's unconfirmed report.
1996-2000: the first RAV4 and an old air bag recall
The first RAV4 had a 120-horsepower 2.0-liter four and came from Toyota plants in Japan. Owners filed 270 complaints on these five model years, and one more sits under model year 1995.
The recall to know is 20V033, from January 2020. Some 1998-2000 RAV4s have driver air bags whose non-azide inflators may soak up moisture and burst. That 138,842-vehicle campaign also covers the 1998-1999 Celica and the 1997-1998 Supra.
2001-2005: power train complaints, then Takata
The 2001-2003 cars draw a heavy share of power train complaints: 168 of 309 on the 2001, 343 of 527 on the 2002 and 192 of 315 on the 2003. No Toyota recall or bulletin we found explains them, so we don't name a cause.
A 2.4-liter four replaced the 2.0 for 2004, and air bags then top the complaint list on the 2004 and 2005. Recall 15V284 (May 2015) covers 159,700 RAV4s from those two years. Their dual-stage driver air bag can take on moisture until the inflator ruptures, and NHTSA's notice says to park the car until the new air bag is in. Both years are also in 19V741, the last phase of Toyota's multi-model Takata recall.
2006-2012: the most complaints, and the rear arms
This generation holds 3,564 complaints, more than a third of the RAV4 total, and the 2007 alone has 1,004. It added an optional 3.5-liter V6 (268 hp), and from November 2008 the North American cars came from Woodstock, Ontario.
- Steering noise. Steering leads the 2006 (203 complaints) and the 2007 (248). Toyota tech tip T-TT-0255-13 points dealers to bulletin T-SB-0318-08 for a clunk, pop or knock when the wheel is turned on 2006-2008 RAV4s, traced to the steering intermediate shaft.
- Rear suspension arms. If a shop tightens the rear alignment nuts wrong, the rear tie rod can work loose, rust and strip its threads until it breaks, and the driver can lose control. Recalls 12V373 and 13V383 cover 780,584 vehicles, and 16V596 adds 337,449 more, replacing both rear arms. All three campaigns include the 2010 Lexus HS 250h along with the 2006-2011 RAV4. Suspension ranks in the top three complaint areas on every year from 2006 to 2010.
- Pedals and floor mats. Vehicle speed control leads the 2009 and 2011 complaint lists. The 2006-2010 RAV4 joined Toyota's floor mat recall in 2011 (11V113), and 2009-2010 cars are in the sticky-pedal recall (10V017).
- Oil burning. The 2.4-liter in 2006-2008 cars was on Toyota's ZE7 oil consumption program. Its last stage lasted a decade past first use or 150,000 miles, so it has run out.
2013-2018: electrical complaints and a battery tray recall
The fourth generation paired a 176-horsepower 2.5-liter four with a six-speed automatic, and the first RAV4 Hybrid arrived for 2016. Electrical complaints outnumber every other kind on all six years. These cars also account for 163 of the RAV4's 289 fire reports. NHTSA's data doesn't say what started each fire.
Recall 23V734 (November 2023) covers 1,853,568 RAV4s from 2013-2018. A replacement 12-volt battery that doesn't fit the tray can shift, touch the hold-down bracket and short circuit, and a short can start a fire. The free fix is a new clamp, tray and positive terminal cover.
2019-2025: engine castings and a hybrid fuel gauge
The fifth generation's 2.5-liter makes 203 hp through an eight-speed automatic, and the hybrid makes 219. The 2019 has 901 complaints, second only to the 2007, led by fuel and propulsion (233) and engine (185).
- Engine castings. Recall 20V064 is for porosity in the 2.5-liter's castings on 2019-2020 RAV4 and RAV4 Hybrid models, which can let coolant leak inside or out. Where the inspection finds it, the dealer swaps the engine, block and all. The 44,191-vehicle campaign also reaches the 2020 Camry, Avalon Hybrid and Lexus ES 300h.
- Hybrid fuel gauge. Toyota program 20TE04 covers the fuel tank and gauge sender on about 143,600 2019-2020 RAV4 Hybrids, after owners saw the gauge stop short of full or the pump click off early.
- Passenger air bag sensor. Air bags lead the 2021 complaints (140 of 409). Recall 23V865 covers a short circuit in the occupant classification sensor of 2020-2021 RAV4s; its 999,901 vehicles span many Toyota and Lexus models.
- Milky oil in winter. Toyota bulletin T-SB-0104-21 lists 2019-2024 RAV4s whose oil can turn milky, or that show a low oil pressure message, after short trips in extreme cold, when moisture in the oil freezes.
2026: hybrid only
The sixth generation comes only as a hybrid or plug-in hybrid, and Toyota Kentucky started building it on June 22, 2026. It has 36 complaints so far. The plug-in RAV4 has its own page: RAV4 Prime.

Fix the RAV4, or sell it unrepaired?
Put the shop's quote next to the price a running RAV4 of your year brings. A quote that swallows most of that price points toward selling it unrepaired. Two free checks come first:
- Open recalls. Search NHTSA's recall database with the RAV4's VIN. If a 2019-2020 is losing coolant or overheating, recall 20V064 may mean the dealer replaces the engine for nothing. On a 2006-2011, ask about the rear arm recalls before paying for suspension work.
- Hybrid battery terms. Hybrids from model year 2020 on get Toyota's longer battery warranty, 150,000 miles or a decade that starts at first use. The 2016-2019 RAV4 Hybrid kept the older 8-year, 100,000-mile terms.
Our non-running car guide covers a RAV4 that won't start or move, and what a junk car is worth explains what moves the price.
Getting the RAV4 picked up whole
- Gather the basics: the VIN, the mileage, and whether it starts, shifts and rolls.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it's parked, be it at home, on the street, at a repair shop or out in a field.
- Leave it in one piece. Sell the whole car as it sits, with the engine, catalytic converter, battery and wheels still on, and list anything that's been taken off.
- At pickup, hand over the title, show a photo ID and leave the keys. Plate and insurance rules vary by state; after you sell lists them.

Questions people ask
- Which RAV4 years draw the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2007, with 1,004 on NHTSA's October 10, 2026 file. The 2019 (901), 2006 (705), 2020 (648) and 2008 (575) follow. The 2006-2012 generation alone holds 3,564 of the RAV4's 9,571 complaints.
- Should I drive a 2004 or 2005 RAV4 that still has its original driver air bag?
- NHTSA's notice for recall 15V284 tells owners not to drive these cars until the driver air bag has been replaced. A Toyota dealer replaces it free of charge. If you'd rather sell the car as it is, tell us the recall is still open.
- What did the RAV4 rear suspension arm recalls fix?
- On 2006-2011 RAV4s, a rear tie rod whose alignment nuts were tightened wrong during service can loosen, rust and fail, and the driver can lose control. Recall 12V373 had dealers check the nuts and replace any loose tie rod. Recall 13V383 replaced tie rods with rusted adjustment threads and sealed all rear tie rods in epoxy. Recall 16V596 replaced both rear suspension arms and sealed the lock nuts. All three also cover the 2010 Lexus HS 250h.
- My 2019 or 2020 RAV4 Hybrid shows a low fuel reading on a full tank. Is that covered?
- Toyota program 20TE04 covers the fuel tank and fuel gauge sender on about 143,600 2019-2020 RAV4 Hybrids built from mid-August 2018 to early July 2020. The program letter we read doesn't state how long the coverage lasts, so have a dealer check your VIN.
- Will you buy a RAV4 that won't roll?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Let us know about a locked wheel, a flat or all-wheel drive, so whoever comes knows how to load it.
