Complaints are rare on this truck. NHTSA holds 360 of them across more than four decades of model years, so each pattern below rests on small numbers. Recalls matter more, and two of them reach the oldest trucks.

From the FJ60 to the hybrid

We counted from NHTSA data downloaded October 10, 2026, and grouped the years by the series Toyota sold here.

The 60 and 80 series came from Toyota City, built by the Araco company. The 200 series was built at Toyota's Yoshiwara and Tahara plants. Toyota skipped the 2022 and 2023 model years in the US and brought the name back for 2024.

60 series: the fuel tank and the rear lap belts

Two recalls cover the square-bodied wagons. Recall 91V110, from June 1991, replaced the fuel tank on 38,500 Land Cruisers from 1984-1990. NHTSA's notice warns that "fuel leakage can lead to fire" near an ignition source. Recall 89V155, from September 1989, fitted a belt guide on 30,256 trucks from 1984-1988 whose rear lap belts might not retract all the way.

Seat belts lead or tie for the lead on the 1984, 1985, 1987 and 1988 trucks, though none of those years has more than 10 complaints. A 1988 owner citing the tank campaign reported that the recall parts were not available.

80 series and early 100 series: brake complaints

The 1990s trucks draw more complaints than the 60 series, and braking leads them. Hydraulic brakes lead or tie for the lead on every year from 1993 through 1997. The 1994 has 20 complaints, the most of any 1990s year, with 5 crashes among them. Complaints on the 1994 describe the truck pulling hard to the right when braking, and one describes a rollover with injury.

NHTSA's file lists no brake recall for the Land Cruiser. The first V8 years, 1998-2000, have 64 complaints with 13 crash reports among them.

2003-2019: air bag recalls

Recall 16V065 covers 2003-2006 Land Cruisers whose side curtain air bag computer could set off the curtains with no crash. That campaign reached 320,409 vehicles in all, including the Lexus LX470, Tundra and Sequoia.

Recall 18V887 reaches almost the whole 200 series run. On 2008-2019 Land Cruisers and the Lexus LX 570, 89,740 vehicles in all, a wire harness for the seat belt tension sensor can break. When it does, it shuts off the front passenger air bag, knee air bag and seat side air bag. Dealers modify or replace the passenger seat belt assembly.

200 series: the accelerator pedal and the fuel pump

Recall 12V305 reaches 2008-2011 trucks built from September 2007 to September 2011. Its 164,601 vehicles also include the 2010 Lexus RX. The pedal can stick open, so dealers modify or replace it and replace any driver's floor mat not specified for the truck. Certain 2014-2015 and 2018-2019 Land Cruisers are also in Toyota's low-pressure fuel pump recalls, 20V012 and 20V682. A failing pump can stall the engine at speed.

250 series: brake noise and a transmission pump

The new hybrid already has 77 complaints across 2024-2027, more than the whole 200 series. Service brakes lead both full years: 14 complaints on the 2024 and 9 on the 2025. Owners describe squeal "since the day it was purchased", noise in reverse, and a hitch-mounted bike rack that trips the Parking Support Brake. One owner wrote that a failed pump inside the transmission is not sold separately, so a whole new transmission was needed.

None of that is a recall. The recall on these trucks, 26V341, fixes instrument cluster software that may not show some warnings. Toyota sends that update over the air.

Complaints and recalls, year by year

NHTSA's files as of October 10, 2026. No complaints are filed for 2012, 2019, 2020, 2022 or 2023. Recalls in a grouped row count each campaign once, and the totals include label campaigns from regional distributors and one air conditioner recall from an outside upfitter.

Worth fixing?

Get a written quote first, and set it beside the truck's value in running shape.

  1. Check open recalls by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. The fuel tank, air bag harness and fuel pump recalls are dealer repairs.
  2. On a 2024 or 2025, go to the dealer first. The truck may still be inside its basic warranty, and the hybrid pack's coverage runs longer.
  3. On a truck that has sat for years, see our car sitting for years guide before you spend on it.

We give no repair prices for this truck because none of our sources publish one. Ask a shop for a written estimate.

How to sell a Land Cruiser whole

  1. Have ready the VIN, the mileage, what works and what doesn't.
  2. Request an offer online or by phone at (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where it is: a barn, a backyard, a curb, a shop lot. Mention if it can roll and steer; that tells the driver what to bring.
  4. Leave the parts on it, including the wheels, bumpers and catalytic converter. Anything removed changes the offer.
  5. The title and a photo ID are needed at pickup. Lost the title? See our no-title guide. For plates and insurance afterward, see after you sell.

Other Toyota 4x4s: the Sequoia, 4Runner and FJ Cruiser.

Questions people ask

Which Land Cruiser years have the most complaints?
The 2024 hybrid has the most, 39, and the 2025 has 32, as of October 10, 2026. Among older trucks the 2000 (25), 1999 (23) and 1994 (20) lead. The whole model has only 360 complaints from 1984 to 2027.
Did my 1984-1990 Land Cruiser get the fuel tank recall?
NHTSA's VIN lookup at nhtsa.gov/recalls answers that, or a Toyota dealer can. Recall 91V110 swapped the original fuel tank for an improved one on 38,500 trucks from 1984-1990, because the old tank could leak and catch fire near an ignition source. One 1988 owner told NHTSA the parts were not available when they asked.
My 2024 Land Cruiser needs a transmission. Should I sell it?
Try the warranty first. Toyota's basic warranty lasts three years or 36,000 miles, and the hybrid pack gets ten years or 150,000 miles. One 2024 owner told NHTSA a failed electric pump inside the transmission is not sold on its own, so they needed a whole new transmission.
Will you take a Land Cruiser that hasn't started in years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including trucks that have been parked a long time. Say if any tire is flat or a wheel is locked up. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
Should I sell the wheels, bumpers or engine separately first?
No. Sell the whole car as it sits. Parts pulled before pickup lower the offer, so leave them on and mention anything that is already missing.
