Six generations, six different weak spots

We pulled every count on this page from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. They span model years 1984 to 2026.

Six campaigns straddle two generations and are tallied in both rows.

1984-1995: the V6 and its head gaskets

Toyota says the first 4Runner was a two-seater with a fiberglass top, and the second got rear doors and a one-piece roof in place of the removable top. Both could have the 3.0-liter 3VZ-E V6, and that engine is where these years' complaints gather. Engine and cooling is the top complaint category on every model year from 1990 to 1995. The 1995 alone carries 104 of them, and in NHTSA's complaint listing for that year, 92 of 117 engine complaints name the head gasket.

In October 1996 Toyota stretched head gasket coverage on 3VZ-E trucks to 8 years or 100,000 miles. Later it traced the fault to trucks built between January 1990 and October 1994 and ran Special Service Campaign V06, which swapped the gaskets on every affected truck, leaking or not. The V06 dealer packet says it expired September 24, 2018.

Recall 05V389 also reaches these years. Turning the wheel to full lock while stopped could, over time, crack the steering relay rod on 1989-1995 4Runners. Dealers replaced the rod. The campaign's 977,839 vehicles include Toyota pickups and T100s as well.

1996-2006: frames that rot through

From the 1996 redesign on, rust dominates the file. Structure, NHTSA's category for the frame and body, is the most-named component on the 4Runner overall, with 1,637 complaints. In the 2000's listing, 239 of 256 structure complaints mention the frame and 213 mention rust or corrosion, most of them filed in 2016-2019. One 1997 owner wrote that rust ate the frame until three suspension mounts broke away.

The 2003 is the peak: 695 complaints, more than any other 4Runner year, and 265 of them in structure. The 2004 follows with 678, of which 291 are structure.

In August 2018 NHTSA opened defect petition DP18-002 covering about 520,059 4Runners from 2002-2006. The owner who filed it said the steering and suspension on a 2005 came apart from the frame on a two-lane highway. A petition is a request for an investigation, not a finding. Toyota does run frame corrosion programs, but the ones we read name Tacomas, Tundras and Sequoias, not the 4Runner.

Two recalls cover the third generation. Recall 02V021 replaced rear suspension parts on 1996-1998 trucks, because a heavily loaded two-wheel-drive 4Runner could lose stability in a hard swerve. Toyota added four-wheel-drive trucks "to avoid any public confusion." Recall 05V225 put new front lower ball joints on 2001-2002 trucks, since a scratched ball could wear loose and separate from the knuckle. That campaign also took in Tacomas, Tundras and Sequoias.

2003-2009: pedals, mats and curtain air bags

Recall 11V113 covers 2003-2009 4Runners, along with RAV4s and the Lexus LX 570, for an accelerator pedal that a loose or wrong floor mat could pin down. Dealers modified or replaced the pedal and swapped Toyota all-weather mats. Recall 16V065 gave 2004-2006 trucks a new air bag control module with improved programming, because the side curtain bags could fire with no crash. Recall 03V146 fixed fuel pulsation dampers that could leak fuel under the hood of 2003 V6 trucks.

2010-2024: the Takata years

Air bags lead the fifth generation's complaints: 90 on the 2010, 112 on the 2011 and 70 on the 2012. Certain 2010-2016 trucks fall under Toyota's Takata inflator recalls, which came in phases from 2016 to 2019 (16V340, 19V005, 19V741 and others). Those campaigns also cover Corollas, Siennas, Yaris, Scion and Lexus models, so their vehicle counts are not 4Runner counts. Of the 112 air bag complaints on the 2011 in the listing, 104 mention a recall, and owners describe waiting for parts.

Recall 20V682 replaced fuel pumps that could stall the engine on 2018-2019 4Runners, inside a campaign spanning many Toyota and Lexus models.

2025 on: the new platform

The sixth generation moved to the TNGA-F truck platform it shares with the Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser. The 2025 has 61 complaints, and 22 are about the service brakes; owners mostly describe squeal or grinding when braking in reverse. Recall 25V595, shared with many other models, updates instrument panel software that could leave the display without critical information at startup.

Why do recall counts rise after 2004 while complaints fall? Of the 45 campaigns, 26 were filed by two regional distributors, Southeast Toyota Distributors and Gulf States Toyota, over add-ons they fitted: wheels, seat heaters, a grille overlay, remote starters and load labels. Half of those 26 covered fewer than 1,000 vehicles.

Repair bill or sale?

Set the shop's estimate beside the price a running 4Runner of the same year fetches. On this truck the frame usually settles the question.

  1. Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. On a 2010-2016, the Takata inflators matter most.
  2. Have the frame looked at where the suspension and steering bolt on. Rot at those points is what owners describe before parts let go. If rust has already failed the truck at inspection, our failed inspection guide covers what comes next.
  3. Head gasket on a 1988-1995 V6? Toyota's campaign ended in 2018, so any repair now comes out of your pocket. If the engine is past saving, see blown engine.
  4. Toyota's other programs have mostly run out. Cracked dashboards on 2003-2005 trucks (ZE6) and peeling white paint on 2008-2015 trucks (ZKG) each had 10 years from first use, so only a late-sold 2015 might still qualify for paint. A dealer can check the VIN.

A truck that won't start or move is covered in our non-running car guide.

How to sell the 4Runner whole

  1. Have the details ready: VIN, mileage, the problem, and whether it rolls and steers.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe the spot: a driveway, back lot, street or shop bay. Mention a broken suspension mount or a missing wheel so the tow driver brings the right truck.
  4. Keep it in one piece. Leave the engine, wheels and catalytic converters on, and tell us about anything already pulled, since missing parts change the offer.
  5. At pickup, hand over the signed title, show a photo ID and give up the keys. Plates stay with you or go back to the state depending on where you live; after you sell sorts that out.

Questions people ask

Which 4Runner model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2003 leads with 695, then the 2004 (678), the 2000 (483), the 2005 (425) and the 2006 (381), counted October 10, 2026. On all five, NHTSA's structure category, which covers the frame and body, is the most-named component.
Does Toyota still cover the 3.0-liter V6 head gasket on my 1990-1995 4Runner?
No. Toyota's 1996 policy covered 3VZ-E head gaskets for 8 years or 100,000 miles, or for a year after the owner's notice letter, and the later V06 campaign replaced gaskets on trucks built from January 1990 to October 1994. The V06 dealer packet is stamped expired as of September 24, 2018.
Was there a recall for rusted 4Runner frames?
Not in NHTSA's recall list for the 4Runner. In August 2018 NHTSA opened defect petition DP18-002 on about 520,059 model year 2002-2006 4Runners after an owner reported the steering and suspension separating from the frame. A petition is an owner's request for an investigation, not a finding. The Toyota frame programs we read cover certain Tacoma, Tundra and Sequoia years, not the 4Runner.
Will you take a 4Runner whose frame has rotted or whose suspension broke loose?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us about the frame and whether the truck still rolls on all four wheels, so the right tow truck is sent.
Should I check the air bags on a 2010-2016 4Runner before selling?
Yes. Certain 2010-2016 trucks are in Toyota's Takata inflator recalls, filed in phases from 2016 to 2019. Enter the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. An open recall doesn't stop a sale, but the next owner should know about it.
