Selling an old Toyota Tercel, running or not
An old Tercel that quit running, failed inspection or has sat in the yard for years can still be sold as one piece. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US, no matter how long it has been parked.

Toyota built the Tercel from 1978 to 1999 at its Takaoka plant in Japan, and the Echo replaced it in North America. Every US Tercel on this page has a 1.5-liter four. NHTSA holds 316 complaints and exactly one recall for it. Air bags and seat belts draw more of the complaints than any other area, well ahead of the engine.
The four Tercels sold from 1984
- 1984-1986 (L20). The 1.5-liter made 63 hp. Hatchbacks and a wagon were offered, and the wagon could be had with four-wheel drive; with the six-speed manual, the 4WD car got an extra-low first gear. The EPA rates the 1984 4WD wagon at 24 mpg city and 29 highway. NHTSA: 14 complaints, no recalls.
- 1987-1990 (L30). The engine turned sideways and became a 12-valve 1.5 with 78 hp. The Tercel EZ and a two-door sedan joined for 1988, while the older-body wagon carried on. For 1990, the front seats got two-point passive belts. NHTSA: 62 complaints, 1 recall.
- 1991-1994 (L40). A hatchback plus two- and four-door sedans, with an 82 hp 1.5. The 1993 with the three-speed automatic is rated 23 mpg city, 26 highway. NHTSA: 124 complaints, no recalls.
- 1995-1999 (L50). A new twin-cam 5E-FE 1.5 with 93 hp, and driver and passenger air bags as standard. A four-speed automatic was offered. From 1997 the CE was the only trim, and the styling changed for 1998. The 1999 five-speed is rated 28 mpg city, 36 highway. NHTSA: 115 complaints, no recalls.
One more complaint sits under model year 2000, which brings the total to 316.
What owners reported
Air bags that did not deploy, 1993-1997
Air bags are the Tercel's largest complaint area, with 74 of the 316. No component comes up more often on the 1993, 1994, 1995, 1996 or 1997: 22 of 43 complaints on the 1993, 18 of 40 on the 1994 and 17 of 51 on the 1995. In NHTSA's listings for the 1993 and 1995, owners describe front crashes where the driver's bag, or both bags, stayed folded, and an air bag light that never went out. The 1993-1995 cars also account for 58 of the 91 crashes reported across all Tercel complaints.
These are owner statements. NHTSA lists no air bag recall for the Tercel, and we found no Toyota or NHTSA finding that confirms a defect.
Passive shoulder belts, early 1990s
Seat belts come second overall, with 44 complaints. They lead the 1991 (7 of 17) and the 1992 (11 of 24). In the 1992 listing, owners say the driver's passive shoulder belt frayed and stopped retracting. No seat belt recall appears in NHTSA's file either.
Fuel and engine
Complaints about the engine and its cooling (36) and the fuel system (16) run through most years. They lead only on the older cars: the fuel system is the most-named component on the 1987 and 1989, engine and cooling on the 1990, and engine and cooling ties electrical on the 1988. We found no Toyota campaign, extended warranty or service bulletin specific to the Tercel.
The one recall
Recall 92V111, from July 1992, covered 360,399 Tercels from 1987-1990. A replacement headlamp bulb of any brand other than Koito could interfere with the housing, which left the lamp out of compliance with FMVSS 108, the federal lighting standard. Dealers handed out a free Koito bulb if a different brand was fitted or the bulb burned out, and stuck caution labels on each housing.
Tercel complaints by model year
Tercel numbers come from NHTSA's flat files, read October 10, 2026. Years with only a handful of complaints (1984-1986, 1998-2000) share a row. Under Crashes is the number of complaints that report a collision.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Most-named component | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1984-1986 | 14 | 1 | Seat belts (4) | 0 |
| 1987 | 13 | 2 | Fuel system (4) | 1 |
| 1988 | 8 | 0 | Engine and cooling / Electrical (3) | 1 |
| 1989 | 22 | 3 | Fuel system (7) | 1 |
| 1990 | 19 | 4 | Engine and cooling (6) | 1 |
| 1991 | 17 | 2 | Seat belts (7) | 0 |
| 1992 | 24 | 3 | Seat belts (11) | 0 |
| 1993 | 43 | 20 | Air bags (22) | 0 |
| 1994 | 40 | 17 | Air bags (18) | 0 |
| 1995 | 51 | 21 | Air bags (17) | 0 |
| 1996 | 40 | 11 | Air bags (7) | 0 |
| 1997 | 20 | 5 | Air bags (8) | 0 |
| 1998-2000 | 5 | 2 | Air bags (2) | 0 |
The single recall, 92V111, appears on each of the four years it covers.
Worth repairing at this age?
Even the newest Tercel is more than 25 years old. Put the shop's written estimate next to local asking prices for a Tercel of the same year that runs. A repair bill bigger than the car's running value is your answer: sell it as it is.
- Air bag light on a 1993-1997? The light means the system has found a fault. Have it checked before you rely on the bags or price a repair.

How to sell the Tercel whole
- Have the VIN handy, along with the odometer reading (if it still works) and the car's faults.
- Get an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
- Let us know if it's under a carport, in a side yard, at a storage lot or by the curb, and whether its tires still inflate and its wheels still roll. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete. A battery, wheel set or converter removed long ago lowers the offer, so mention it.
- At pickup, have the title (or whatever your state accepts instead) and a photo ID. Our no-title guide covers the paperwork, and after you sell covers plates and insurance.

Questions people ask
- Which Tercel model years drew the most complaints?
- The 1995 tops the list at 51 complaints (NHTSA data, October 10, 2026). The 1993 has 43, the 1994 and 1996 have 40 apiece, and the 1992 has 24. Air bags were what owners named most on each year from 1993 to 1997.
- Was the Tercel ever recalled for its air bags or seat belts?
- No. The only Tercel recall in NHTSA's file is 92V111, for headlamp bulbs on 1987-1990 cars. The air bag and seat belt reports are complaints from owners, and no recall followed them.
- Will you buy a Tercel that hasn't started in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, however long they have been parked, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Flat tires or locked-up brakes are worth mentioning, because they decide how the car gets loaded.
- The title for my Tercel is long gone. Can I still sell it?
- That depends on your state. Our no-title guide sets out what each state accepts in place of a title, and when you need a duplicate first.
