Selling a Toyota Paseo that has quit
A Paseo with a seized engine, a cracked radiator or a coat of pollen from years under a tree can still be sold. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a small Toyota coupe from the 1990s qualifies. Pickup is free anywhere in the US, and you leave everything on it.

The Paseo's file at NHTSA is thin: 40 complaints over the 1992-1997 model years, and not one recall campaign. What owners did report centers on air bags and on the engine and cooling system.
Tercel parts under a coupe body
Toyota based the Paseo on the Tercel, and it shared a platform with the Starlet. In Japan it was sold as the Cynos.
1992-1995. Toyota's Takaoka plant in Toyota City built the first generation from January 1991 to August 1995. It used a 1.5-liter 5E-FE four rated at 100 hp, paired with Toyota's five-speed manual gearbox or its four-speed automatic. From 1993, cars sold in states using California's emissions standards were rated at 93 hp. The EPA put a 1992 five-speed at 27 mpg combined.
1996-1997. New sheet metal and updated engine electronics were about the only changes for 1996, and every US engine now made 93 hp. ASC built a convertible version that went on sale in August 1996. Slow sales then ended the Paseo in the US early in the 1997 model year. Canada, Europe and Japan kept it until 1999.
What owners told NHTSA
Air bags lead the list, with 12 complaints. Six are on the 1993, and most describe a driver air bag that did not go off in a frontal crash. One 1993 owner reports the reverse, a deployment that burned the driver's face, neck and eyes. The 1994 reports repeat both patterns, including a bag that went off at about 20 mph and put the driver in hospital. None of this produced a recall.
The 1992 has the most complaints of any year, 16, and six concern the engine or its cooling. Owners describe a crankshaft seizing and a plastic radiator that failed. One wrote that, per their mechanic, there were "NO METAL REPLACEMENT PARTS AVAILABLE FOR PASEO." Other 1992 reports describe a front axle breaking off and front wheel bearings worn until the wheel was loose.

Is a repair worth it?
NHTSA lists no Paseo recall, and we found no Toyota program for it, so plan on paying for any repair yourself. Ask a shop for a written quote, then check what running Paseos of the same year are selling for nearby. Parts can be the deciding factor on a car this old, as the radiator complaint shows. If the quote is near or above what a running Paseo brings, selling it whole is the easier route. Our junk car guide covers what qualifies and how the sale works.
Steps to sell it whole
- Read the VIN off the dash or the title, and note the mileage and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Where is it? A carport, a side yard, a relative's driveway. Say whether it rolls.
- Leave it complete, wheels, engine and catalytic converter included. Mention anything already gone.
- Hand over the title at pickup. If it's lost, our no-title guide explains the options, and after you sell covers the plates.

Questions people ask
- Was the Toyota Paseo ever recalled?
- NHTSA's recall files hold no campaign for any Paseo model year, 1992 through 1997. A VIN check at nhtsa.gov/recalls takes a minute and settles it for your car.
- Which Paseo year has the most complaints?
- The 1992, with 16 of the 40 on file. The 1993 has 11 and the 1994 has 10. The second-generation 1996 and 1997 have three between them, and the 1995 has none.
- Will you take a Paseo that hasn't started in years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and age doesn't rule a car out. Give us its location and say if it can roll. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
