Selling a dead or junk car in Bountiful

A lost title doesn't stop a sale from Bountiful. Utah's Form TC-123 lets someone whose Utah title has gone missing assign the car straight to a buyer, skipping the duplicate in their own name. That fits a car that sat in a Bountiful garage for years while its papers went missing. We buy whole non-running and junk cars on the east bench and below it. You sell the whole car as it sits; pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Two ways TC-123 helps

TC-123 is the Application for Duplicate Utah Title, and it works either way:

  • Order a duplicate. File the form, or ask through the Motor Vehicle Portal online. Cost: $6.00.
  • Skip the duplicate. Part two assigns and releases ownership to the buyer, so no replacement is printed for you.

Whichever you pick, Utah wants the seller to get a title to the buyer within 48 hours. Every vehicle operated in Utah must be titled regardless of model year, so age doesn't exempt a classic. If the car was never put in your name, read car not in your name; the broader case is in junk car with no title.

Signing in Bountiful

  • Utah titles take no notary.
  • AND between owners: everyone signs. OR: one owner is enough.
  • TC-891, the odometer statement, applies unless the car has hit 20 model years.
  • Davis County tests emissions, so a current emission certificate goes to the buyer when applicable, along with the registration.
  • A bill of sale proves the title legally moved. Utah's version is TC-843.

The Farmington office

The State Tax Commission's Motor Vehicle Division issues Utah titles. For Davis County, its office list shows 969 W Clark Lane in Farmington; the number there is 801-297-7780. Central Bountiful sits around 8 miles south of it in a straight line. Much of this paperwork can go by mail or through MVP instead. See the Utah DMV for hours.

Abandoned cars under state law

We could not find Bountiful's code online, so this covers Utah law; the city may add its own rules.

A car alone on a highway past 48 hours is abandoned in Utah's eyes; on land without permission, the line is a week. Either is an infraction, and an officer with reasonable grounds may have the car moved. Picture a towed Bountiful car eight model years old or more that nobody claims within 30 days of the first notice. The state may then issue the tow company a certificate of sale.

Plates and the sold notice

Your plate leaves with you unless it's sold with the car. One left on can make you answer for parking or traffic violations. Bountiful sellers can file the sale report on MVP, phone 1-800-DMV-UTAH, or mail form TC-502 or a signed letter with the year, make, and plate or VIN to P.O. Box 30412, Salt Lake City, UT 84130.

Questions people ask

The title to the old car in my Bountiful garage is gone. Can I still sell?
Yes. Utah's TC-123 is the duplicate-title application, and its part two assigns and releases ownership directly to your buyer. No duplicate has to be issued in your name first.
Two names are printed on my title. Who signs?
Read the connecting word. With AND, all owners named must sign. On a Bountiful title joined by OR, either owner may sign without the other. Utah needs no notary in either case.
Does Bountiful have a junk-car ordinance?
Bountiful's city code was not posted online, so we used Utah state law for this page. The city may still set its own limits on inoperable cars; Bountiful's offices can confirm.
