Selling a junk car in Farmington

Farmington draws its line at two. Section 7-9-060 lets a resident keep "two (2) or less" junk vehicles inside a building or behind an opaque screen. A third makes the lot a nuisance. Any junk vehicle left in the open must be gone within 72 hours. If one of yours has to go, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

What 7-9-060 asks of a Farmington owner

The section makes it unlawful to leave a "junk vehicle" on private property in city limits "for a period of time in excess of seventy two (72) hours," attended or not. The duty to remove it falls on the car's owner, or on the lessee or other person holding the property. Only a junkyard or wrecking yard lawfully set up under the city's zoning is exempt.

How a notice works here

  • Delivery. Under 7-9-080, an inspector serves written notice in person or by mail. Farmington's notice goes by mail to the owner or occupant at the Davis County assessor's last address on file.
  • One per year. Section 7-9-100 says one notice is "sufficient" for "the entire calendar year" for violations such as junk vehicles. A car that comes back in the fall doesn't earn a fresh warning.
  • The bill. If the city does the removal, 7-9-160 lets it send an itemized statement of the costs to the Davis County treasurer, to be added to the property tax notice.
  • The penalty. Section 7-9-170 treats a violation as "a class B misdemeanor," or the city can use civil enforcement instead.

Snow nights on Farmington streets

From December 1 through the last day of February, Section 14-5-010 bars street parking from 1 a.m. to 7 a.m. when snow is piling up on the street, or has piled up in the last 24 hours. Streets in or next to the mixed-use zones (CMU, GMU, NMU, OMU, RMU and TMU) are exempt. The code warns that plows push snow into parking spaces, parked cars included. Breaking a parking rule makes a car "subject to impoundment" under 14-5-100, and 14-7-020 keeps "state impoundment procedures" in force. See towed or impounded if that has already happened.

The title office is in town

Our search found a Davis County title counter in Farmington itself, at 969 W Clark Lane, phone 801-297-7780. In a straight line, it sits less than a mile southwest of downtown Farmington. A replacement title runs $6.00, ordered online or on Form TC-123.

Utah rules worth knowing before you sell

A crash car brings Utah's salvage law into play. Selling one with a salvage certificate or a branded title means telling the buyer in writing first, and saying so in any ad as well. Breaking a car down is regulated too. Before a Farmington car gets taken apart, its title must be turned in for cancellation along with a dismantling permit application. The exception is a junk permit from a Tax Commission employee, for a car that won't be rebuilt. More on brands: salvage title.

Your own part is light. Sign without a notary, deliver the title inside 48 hours, keep the plates unless they're part of the deal, and let the DMV know it's sold. After you sell has the steps.

Reach us at (877) 421-6008 or online. Describe the car and its mileage, say whether it fires up, and tell us the state of the paperwork. Questions people ask

What's the junk-car limit for a Farmington lot?
Two, as long as each one is indoors or hidden by an opaque screen. More than two is a nuisance under Section 7-9-060, and any junk car left uncovered must go after 72 hours.
I already got a notice this year. Will the city send another?
It doesn't have to. Section 7-9-100 says one notice is enough for the whole calendar year for violations such as junk vehicles.
Can removal costs end up on my property tax bill?
Yes. Section 7-9-160 lets the city send an itemized statement of the costs to the Davis County treasurer for the owner's tax notice.
Where is the title office in Farmington?
The one we checked is 969 W Clark Lane, under a mile southwest of central Farmington as the crow flies. Its phone is 801-297-7780.
