Selling a junk or dead car in Magna
Magna sits well apart from the other towns on our list. The closest is West Valley City, 10.2 miles away in a straight line. The Taylorsville title office we looked up is about 13 miles southeast, measured the same way. That gap is not a big deal, since a Utah seller can handle almost all the paperwork without visiting a counter. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US, Magna included.

When a car becomes abandoned under Utah law
Magna's own ordinances were not online when we searched; the rules here come from the state, and local ones may also apply. The state's line is consent. A vehicle sitting on land for "a period in excess of seven days without express or implied consent of the owner or person in control of the property" is abandoned. A dead car behind a relative's house with their blessing does not meet that test; one a landlord never agreed to can. Highways allow only 48 hours. Doing either is an infraction, and an officer can take the car away.
Lost the title? You may not need a duplicate
When a Utah title is lost, its seller can use Form TC-123 to sign ownership over to the buyer directly, skipping a duplicate in the seller's own name. Part two of the form handles the assignment and release. Prefer a duplicate? It is $6.00, ordered online or on that same form. More in junk car with no title.
Two names on the title
Check the small word between the owners' names before anyone signs. With AND, both of you put pen to paper. With OR, one signature does it. Either way, Utah wants no notary.
Before the car leaves Magna
- Have the title to your buyer inside 48 hours, registration certificate with it.
- Magna is in Salt Lake County, where emissions tests apply, so pass along a current emission certificate if one applies.
- Write a bill of sale. It is your proof that the title legally changed hands, and the state's form is TC-843.
- Unscrew the plates, keeping them unless they were sold along with the car. One left on can drag you into parking or traffic violations.
- Send word to the DMV through its Motor Vehicle Portal, a mailed letter, or a 1-800-DMV-UTAH call.
After you sell walks through the last steps.
