From central Kearns, the state title office we checked sits about 3 miles northeast as the crow flies, at 4315 S 2700 W, Suite 1200, Taylorsville (801-297-7780). In a place of 4.632 square miles, paperwork for a dead car stays close to home. If the car will not make even that short trip, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, and you sell the whole car as it sits.

Which rules reach a dead car in Kearns

No Kearns ordinance on junk cars turned up online, so what follows is Utah law; local rules may exist as well. The state's test turns on time and permission. A highway gives a stalled car 48 hours before the law calls it abandoned. Private or public land allows longer, within limits: abandonment there means "a period in excess of seven days without express or implied consent of the owner or person in control of the property." Officers with reasonable grounds can have such a car hauled off, and abandoning it is an infraction.

A car that will never run again

Utah has a shorter path for a vehicle past saving. After an investigator puts in writing that the car cannot be rebuilt, the law treats it as abandoned and inoperable, and it may be turned into scrap without the usual dismantling permit steps. The person buying it for salvage puts in writing that it stays unrebuilt. Separately, a junk permit from a State Tax Commission employee can clear an inoperable, never-to-be-rebuilt car for dismantling and shredding. Who buys cars for parts covers the buyers on the other end.

Signing it over

  • Utah titles need no notary.
  • Within 48 hours the buyer receives the signed title and the current registration certificate. Salt Lake County, home to Kearns, requires emissions tests; include a current emission certificate if one applies.
  • TC-891, the odometer statement, carries both signatures for any car younger than 20 years.
  • Keep the plate unless it is part of the sale. One left on the car can leave you answering for its parking or traffic violations.
  • Tell the DMV in writing, over the phone, or on the Motor Vehicle Portal.
  • No title? Form TC-123 moves ownership to the buyer directly, with no duplicate needed. A duplicate is $6.00 if you want one.

Questions people ask

How far is the DMV from Kearns?
The office we checked sits at 4315 S 2700 W, Suite 1200, Taylorsville, about 3 miles northeast of central Kearns as the crow flies; call 801-297-7780.
Is there a Kearns rule on junk cars in the yard?
Nothing local on junk cars showed up for Kearns in our online search, which does not mean none exists. Utah law applies either way.
What happens to a Kearns car that can never be rebuilt?
Once an investigator states in writing that it cannot be rebuilt, Utah treats it as abandoned and inoperable. From there it can be scrapped with no dismantling permit, and the salvage buyer gives a signed statement against rebuilding.
No title in the glovebox. Can a Kearns seller still sell?
Yes. With Form TC-123, the seller of a car whose Utah title is lost assigns ownership straight to the buyer. A duplicate is optional and costs $6.00.
