Selling a dead or junk Volkswagen Vanagon

Owners have filed only 49 complaints with NHTSA about the Volkswagen Vanagon, but nine of them report a fire, and four of its 11 recall campaigns deal with the fuel system. The fuel system is also what owners named most, in 17 complaints.

The T3 in the US

The Vanagon is the third-generation Transporter, the T3. Wikipedia lists it as rear-engine, with rear-wheel or four-wheel drive, built in Hannover, Germany, with Syncro models assembled by Puch in Graz, Austria. In the US it was replaced by the T4, the Eurovan, in 1993; Wikipedia notes that no Volkswagen vans were imported for 1992 apart from custom campers sold by other companies. EPA's file covers 1984 to 1991.

Recalls, grouped by years

1985-1986. Recall 85V152000 modified the passenger sliding door lock on 1985 vans: force could damage the latch so the door might open on bumpy roads. On 1986 vans, 87V051000 replaced a filler neck pipe that might not seat in the tank.

1986-1988, the busy stretch. Recall 87V052000 installed a new fuel tank with a redesigned filter, because fuel with Reid vapor pressure up to 14 psi could cause stalling under high load in hot weather (15,500 vehicles in the campaign). Recall 88V038000 swapped an in-line fuel filter that could seep at its seam for a straight hose (12,000). Smaller 1987-1988 campaigns covered rear seat brackets that might not engage, a poorly welded pin in the automatic transmission's shift locking pawl, a wrong jack, Semperit tires with bead cracks from mounting, and a cruise control accelerator cable that could snag and keep the throttle from returning to idle.

1986-1991. Recall 93V175000 reinforced the ceiling air conditioner ducts, whose plastic can crack and break (29,500). Recall 92V058000 replaced the fuel rail hose on 1990-1991 vans; its 358,000 vehicles are a whole-campaign count that may cover other models, as every count here may.

No complaints are on file for 1989. Counted through October 10, 2026. The 1990-1991 vans have had fewer years than the 1984s to draw reports.

Fix it or sell it?

Run the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup. With a fire count this high for so few complaints, any fuel smell is a reason to stop driving the van until it's checked. Beyond that, set a written quote against what a running Vanagon of the same version brings. A van parked for years is covered in car sitting for years, and a stalled camper build in old project car.

Selling the Vanagon whole

Have the VIN, the title and a note on the problem. Ask for an offer online, or phone (877) 421-6008. Say whether it's a 2WD, Syncro or Camper, where it's parked, and whether it rolls. Sell the whole car as it sits, camper gear included. Plate rules: after you sell.

Related vans: the Eurovan and Routan, or every Volkswagen we cover.
