Selling a dead or junk Volkswagen Eurovan
Eighty-two of the Volkswagen Eurovan's 219 NHTSA complaints are about the 1993 model year, and 42 of those name the gasoline fuel system. That first year also carries three of the van's six recall campaigns and 10 of its 21 reported fires.

If your Eurovan is parked with a repair you don't want to pay for, we buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Every count on this page comes from owner reports in NHTSA's complaint file through October 10, 2026, and none of it grades the van.
One van, three stretches of years
The Eurovan is the fourth-generation Volkswagen Transporter, known as the T4. Wikipedia lists production from 1990 to 2004, a front engine with front-wheel or four-wheel drive, and assembly in Hanover, Germany, among other plants. It followed the rear-engine Type 2 (T3), sold here as the Vanagon, and was replaced by the T5.
EPA's fuel economy file lists Eurovans from 1993 to 2003, as the Eurovan and the Eurovan Camper. Wikipedia says Volkswagen brought EuroVan passenger models back to the US for the 1999 model year with a VR6 engine as standard, then ended the T4 worldwide after 2003. Because the T5 was never exported to the US, Volkswagen had no van in its North American lineup after that.
1993: fuel hoses and three recalls
The 1993 is where the complaints pile up. Forty-two of its 82 name the fuel system, and 10 name hoses, lines and fittings. Ten owners reported a fire.
Recall 00V039000, reported in February 2000, explains part of that. The ends of the fuel feed and return hoses in the engine compartment can settle over time, so the clamps lose their tight fit and fuel can seep out. Dealers replace both hoses. The 11,400 vehicles in that campaign is a whole-campaign count, and NHTSA describes the vehicles only as minivans, so it may include more than the Eurovan.
Two more 1993 recalls are smaller. Recall 93V138000 (2,400 vehicles in the campaign) adds a longer tension spring to the emergency brake handle so the lock stays engaged. Recall 94V058000 (8,350 in the campaign) replaces an upper locking bolt on the steering universal joint that was not torqued enough at the factory.
1995-1998: a quiet stretch and one camper recall
Only 22 complaints sit on the 1995, 1997 and 1998 vans combined. The one recall here, 97V016001, covers 1997 Campers: while the camper equipment was being installed, a badly adjusted drill bit punctured the fuel tank vapor container. Volkswagen dealers check it on behalf of Winnebago. That campaign covered 201 vehicles.
1999-2003: the VR6 years
These five years hold 113 complaints, more than half the total. Engine and engine cooling is the top component on the 2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003, and second on the 1999. Across the five years, 36 complaints name it. The 1999 is the odd one out, with seat belts named most and three people reported injured. The 2002 and 2003 each have four reported fires.
Two recalls touch this stretch. Recall 02V136000 mailed 2001 owners a corrected "Safety First" booklet with the right instructions for the child seat tether anchors. Recall 18V406000 replaces the driver's frontal air bag inflator on 2003 EuroVan, EuroVan Camper Van and EuroVan Chassis models. That campaign also covers some 2003 Passat, Jetta and Golf cars, so its 2,564 vehicles are not all vans. The repair is free, and the recall began May 2, 2019.
Eurovan complaints and recalls, year by year
| Model year | Complaints | Fires reported | Recall campaigns | Named most often |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1992 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Engine and engine cooling |
| 1993 | 82 | 10 | 3 | Fuel system, gasoline (42) |
| 1995 | 6 | 0 | 0 | Engine and engine cooling (2) |
| 1997 | 14 | 1 | 1 | Hoses, lines and fittings; equipment (2 each) |
| 1998 | 2 | 0 | 0 | Steering; visibility (1 each) |
| 1999 | 17 | 0 | 0 | Seat belts (5) |
| 2000 | 25 | 1 | 0 | Engine and engine cooling (13) |
| 2001 | 21 | 1 | 1 | Engine and engine cooling (6) |
| 2002 | 35 | 4 | 0 | Engine and engine cooling (10) |
| 2003 | 15 | 4 | 1 | Engine and engine cooling (3) |
| 2004 | 1 | 0 | 0 | Tires |
The 1992 and 2004 rows fall outside EPA's 1993-2003 years; those complaints were filed under those years. A 2003 van has had ten fewer years than a 1993 to draw reports. Each recall figure is the number of Volkswagen campaigns NHTSA ties to that model year.
Fix it, or let the van go?
First, the VIN goes into NHTSA's recall lookup, and on a 2003, ask a Volkswagen dealer about the air bag inflator recall before anything else.
- Fuel smell on a 1993? Stop driving it until it is checked. The fuel hose recall above is the first thing to ask about.
- Engine or cooling trouble on a 1999-2003? That is the pattern in the complaint file for those years. Our head gasket and overheating guide and blown engine guide explain how to weigh the repair.
- Then put two numbers side by side. One is the written repair figure; the other is the going rate for a running Eurovan of the same year and version. If the quote comes close, selling it as it sits is the simpler path. See repairs cost more than it's worth.
Selling a Eurovan whole
- Note what you have: the VIN, the odometer reading, the problem, and Eurovan or Eurovan Camper.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where it sits. A Eurovan is long and tall, so mention a tight driveway, a low carport or a garage. Free pickup anywhere in the US, and the truck comes to the van.
- Leave it whole. Camper gear, wheels and the catalytic converter stay on. Tell us about anything already gone.
- When the truck arrives, the title, your photo ID and any keys change hands. Plate rules vary by state; after you sell lists them. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which Eurovan model year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1993, with 82 of the van's 219 complaints through October 10, 2026. The 2002 follows with 35, then the 2000 with 25. A later van has had a shorter stretch for owners to report on, though even a 2003 Eurovan is now more than two decades old.
- Does the 2003 Eurovan have an air bag recall?
- Yes. Recall 18V406000 covers the driver's frontal air bag inflator on 2003 EuroVan, EuroVan Camper Van and EuroVan Chassis vehicles, along with some 2003 Passat, Jetta and Golf models. Dealers replace the inflator free of charge, and nhtsa.gov/recalls shows whether it is still open on your VIN.
- Will you buy a Eurovan Camper that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and a Camper is a whole van. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us it's a Camper and where it's parked.
- Should I pull the camper gear or the engine parts before selling?
- No. Leave everything in place. Mention anything already gone up front, because missing parts change the number.
