Selling an old Volvo 740, 760 or 780
Half of the crash reports in NHTSA's 700 Series complaints come from one model year. The 1990 has 62 complaints, 26 of them describing a crash, and the component named most is vehicle speed control, 22 times. Across every year, owners filed 235 complaints and 52 of them report a crash.

Three cars under one badge
Volvo built about 1,430,000 of the 700 Series between 1982 and 1992, Wikipedia says, all front-engine, rear-wheel drive. The EPA data lists it for 1984-1992 under ten names, from the 740 and 760 to the 740 16-Valve and the 780.
- 740: built 1984-1992 with 2.0-liter four-cylinder engines (the B19/B200, the 16-valve B204, or a B200T turbo). Gearboxes were the 4-speed M46 manual, 5-speed M47 manual or a 4-speed automatic. Wikipedia says the 740 Turbo sedan and 740 SE were dropped for 1992, and the 740 ended that year after the 850 arrived.
- 760: built 1982-1990 in Kalmar, Sweden, with 2.3-liter turbo fours (B23ET, B230ET/FT) or a 2.8-liter B28 V6. Production ended on June 27, 1990, and the 960 took its place.
- 780: a Bertone-built coupe from Turin, Italy, made 1986-1990 with a 2.0-liter B200ET turbo. Wikipedia names the C70 as its successor.
What owners reported, period by period
The 700 Series figures here are complaints owners had filed with NHTSA through October 10, 2026. They are reports, not confirmed faults.
1985-1987: wiring and an engine pulley
These three years hold 57 complaints, and electrical is the top component on the 1986 (6) and the 1987 (10). That lines up with recall 87V064: on 1985-1987 cars, the engine wiring harness could chafe against an air conditioning pipe, and dealers moved it with a new bracket and clamp. The campaign counted 106,602 vehicles, which may include other Volvos.
The 1985 also has 85V002, for water pump pulleys that could break and throw pieces inside the engine bay (7,390 vehicles). Wagons from 1986 had 86V083: the tailgate child lock could still be opened from inside (1,068 vehicles). And 89V204 covers 1986-1988 cars whose driveshaft could rub the fuel tank (38,000 vehicles).
1988-1990: fires, then speed control
This is where 146 of the 235 complaints sit. The 1989 has 57, and 17 of them mention a fire, the most of any year; its top components are electrical (16) and the engine and cooling (12). Then the 1990: speed control (22), air bags (9) and electrical (6), plus 26 crash reports and 13 injured.
Fuel recalls cluster here. 91V010 (1989-1990) says fuel might seep out the top of the tank when high heat, an overfilled tank and a loose sending unit lock ring happened at once. Its 19,286 vehicles include the 940SE, so the count is not the 700's alone. 90V165 (1990) replaced a fuel damper whose solder joints could leak (253 vehicles). The 1988 had a headlight switch that could short (87V195, 2,930 vehicles), and the 1989 had wrong tire labels (89V183).
Two longer campaigns reach into these years: 97V166 (1987-1991) for chafed seat heater and power seat cables, 9,684 vehicles, and 91V075 (1985-1991) for seat belt routing labels and buckles, 485 vehicles.
1991-1993: the tail end
The last years add only 32 complaints. Air bags lead the 1991 with 10. The 1992 has 8 and the 1993 has 2.
700 Series complaints by model year
NHTSA's file on October 10, 2026 supplied these counts. Late 700 Series cars spent fewer years on the road, and owners logged fewer reports about them. No complaints appear under the 1984 model year. A 700 Series recall campaign may span several years, so the per-year numbers overlap.
| Model year | Complaints | Crash reports | Fire | Injured | Recalls |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1985 | 12 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 3 |
| 1986 | 16 | 2 | 8 | 1 | 4 |
| 1987 | 29 | 8 | 4 | 6 | 4 |
| 1988 | 27 | 3 | 6 | 7 | 4 |
| 1989 | 57 | 3 | 17 | 3 | 4 |
| 1990 | 62 | 26 | 6 | 13 | 4 |
| 1991 | 22 | 7 | 1 | 7 | 2 |
| 1992 | 8 | 2 | 2 | 1 | 0 |
| 1993 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Total | 235 | 52 | 45 | 38 | 10 campaigns |
The components named most over the whole run: electrical (50), vehicle speed control (43), air bags (32), the engine and cooling (29), power train (11) and the gasoline fuel system (11).
Fix it or sell it?
With a 700 Series this old, it's less about a single repair and more about everything on the list. A 740 that has sat for years usually needs tires, brakes, fluids and a fuel system check before anything else.
- If someone wants to restore it, our old project car guide covers that kind of sale.
- If it has been parked a long time, read car sitting for years.
- If the wiring is the trouble, see electrical problems; it's the top complaint area on these cars.
- If it won't start at all, car doesn't run walks through the choices.
You can still look up any 700 Series VIN at NHTSA's recall search.
Selling a 740, 760 or 780 whole
- Know which one you have. The badge, the title or the VIN tells you 740, 760 or 780, sedan or wagon.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe how it sits. Rear-wheel-drive cars that have been parked for decades often have seized brakes or flat tires; say so, and say if it's in a garage, a field or a driveway.
- Leave the 700 in one piece. Don't pull the engine, converter or wheels, and let us know what's already gone.
- Find the title and bring photo ID. If the title is missing or was never put in your name, see selling with no title and car not in your name.
Other older Volvos: the 240, 850, 940 and 960, or every Volvo.
Questions people ask
- Which 700 Series year has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 1990, with 62 as of October 10, 2026. It also holds 26 of the 52 complaints that report a crash, and vehicle speed control is its top component (22). The 1989 is close behind with 57.
- Why does NHTSA show a 1993 700 Series when the EPA data stops at 1992?
- NHTSA's file has 2 complaints under a 1993 model year, both about air bags. The EPA data for the 700 Series runs 1984-1992, and Wikipedia says the 740 was dropped in 1992 after the 850 came out.
- Is there a recall about the driveshaft hitting the fuel tank?
- Yes. Recall 89V204 covers 1986-1988 cars. NHTSA's notice says the driveshaft could contact and scrape the fuel tank. The remedy was a new tank and/or a protective device between the two. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
- Will you take a 740 that has been sitting for years?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us whether it rolls, whether the tires hold air, and how the truck can reach it.
