Selling an old or non-running Volvo 960

What the 960 is

Wikipedia dates 960 production from September 1990 to February 1998. It rode on Volvo's P90 platform with a front engine and rear-wheel drive, and it replaced the 700 Series. EPA data lists it for the 1992 to 1997 model years, as a sedan and a wagon. Some later cars appear in the EPA files as "960/S90" and "960 Wagon/V90."

Production of the 960 and its S90 and V90 versions ended in 1998, Wikipedia says, at 112,710 sedans and 41,619 estates (wagons).

Known problems, grouped by model year

The 960 had one generation, so the groups below follow the complaint data rather than a redesign.

1992-1994: engine and cooling complaints first

Of the 21 complaints on the 1992, 13 name the engine and engine cooling and 5 name the electrical system. The 1993 is the quietest year on file, with 7 complaints spread across speed control, fuel and air bags. On the 1994, air bags lead with 4 of 19.

1995-1996: the peak, and the one recall

The 1995 has 57 complaints. Engine and engine cooling is named in 12, vehicle speed control in 8 and air bags in 5. Owners reported 11 crashes, 6 fires and 9 injuries on this model year, the most fires of any 960 year.

It is also the only 960 year with a recall. Campaign 94V215000, reported November 1, 2004, said the driver's side air bag module might not deploy properly, and dealers were to replace it. The campaign covered 132 vehicles in total, a count that may include models other than the 960.

The 1996 has the most complaints of all, 60. Here the electrical system leads with 8, then hydraulic service brakes with 7 and air bags with 6. Ten people reported injuries.

1997: the last year

The final 960 year has 20 complaints: 4 each for the engine and air bags, and 3 for hydraulic brakes.

Over every 960 year, engine and engine cooling comes up most (38). Air bags follow (21), then vehicle speed control (18), hydraulic service brakes (16), and the electrical and gasoline fuel systems (15 each).

Repair it, or let it go?

The youngest 960 is a 1997, so every one is close to 30 years old or past it. Start with the numbers that decide the question.

1. Look up recalls first. Enter your VIN at NHTSA's recall page. On a 1995, ask a Volvo dealer whether the air bag campaign was ever done.

Selling the whole 960

1. Know which 960 you have. Sedan or wagon, and whether the badge reads 960, S90 or V90.
2. Say if it is an Executive. Wikipedia gives the long-wheelbase 960 Executive and S90 Royal a 115-inch wheelbase, against 109.1 inches for the standard car. The longer car needs the right truck.
3. Describe where it sits: a driveway, a barn, a side street. Let us know if your 960 can roll and its tires are still up.
