Selling a broken or junk Volvo C70

Structure is the component named most often in NHTSA complaints about the Volvo C70: 44 times out of 233. At least 38 of those come from 2007-2013 cars, the second generation. The first-generation cars draw a different set of complaints, led by throttle and electrical trouble.

C70 complaints and recalls at a glance

This C70 tally reflects what NHTSA had on file from owners on October 10, 2026. Each report is an owner's claim, not a proven defect, and owners of the final C70s have had fewer years to file one. No 2005 model year appears in the counts. A single C70 recall may reach across a few model years, so the per-year numbers overlap.

Two generations, two sets of complaints

First generation (1998-2004 in the US)

Wikipedia dates this C70 to 1996-2005, with 76,809 built at Uddevalla, Sweden, in a venture with TWR. The coupe ran 1996-2002 and the convertible 1997-2005. The C70 used the P80 platform, front-wheel drive and a 2.0 to 2.4-liter five-cylinder, paired with a 5-speed manual or a 4- or 5-speed Aisin automatic. Ian Callum and Peter Horbury shaped the outside, and the car appeared in the 1997 film The Saint.

These years hold 124 complaints. Speed control leads the 1999 and 2001, and electrical leads the 2000. The recall that fits that pattern is 06V441 (1999-2002): throttle position sensor irregularities, a dirty throttle housing or software calibration can light a warning lamp and drop the car into limp-home mode. Dealers load a software upgrade.

Lighting recalls dominate the rest. Headlight switches got two campaigns, 99V235 (1998) and 04V504 (1998-2000), and 00V405 (1998-2001) replaced front turn signal bulbs and sockets with poor contact. 99V236 (1998) added a ground wire because the passenger air bag could be too sensitive to static discharge. These four campaigns list between 97,000 and 245,894 vehicles each and span other Volvo models, so none of those numbers is the C70's alone.

Second generation (2006-2013)

The second C70 was built from 2005 to 2013 by a Volvo joint venture with Pininfarina Sverige at Uddevalla, 89,080 in all, on the P1 platform. It used a 2,435 cc five-cylinder or a 2,521 cc turbo five, with 5- and 6-speed manuals or 5- and 6-speed Aisin automatics. Wikipedia says production ended when the joint venture did, and the last car rolled out on June 25, 2013.

These years hold 109 complaints, and structure is on top for 2007, 2008, 2009, 2011 and 2013. The 2012 is the odd one: 10 of its 23 complaints are filed as unknown or other.

Recalls on this body are small:

  • 07V218 (2007): the left door handle cable was assembled wrong; dealers reposition it. 7,828 vehicles.
  • 08V101 (2007): a brake master cylinder seal could wear early and leak inside. The 1,114-vehicle campaign also covers the C30, S40 and V50.
  • 08V329 (2008-2009): a C70 power steering return hose was not cured the right way (1,020 vehicles).
  • 11V508 (2006-2012): a label check. Its 20,611 vehicles include some 2011-2012 S60s.
  • 10V566 (2006-2010): stop using Garmin 760 portable GPS units, whose batteries could overheat (416 vehicles).

Fix it or sell it?

  1. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall search. On a 1999-2002 in limp mode, ask a Volvo dealer whether the 06V441 software update was done.
  2. Warning light and no power? Our check engine light guide explains what a scan can tell you.
  3. Won't start at all? See car doesn't run.
  4. Big quote? Hold it up against what a running C70 of that year brings. If the gap is small, repairs that cost more than it's worth helps you decide.

Selling a C70 the easy way

  1. Note the year, body and engine: coupe or convertible, the VIN, the mileage and what has gone wrong.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where your C70 is and if its roof is up and shut, so we can load it with no damage or water inside.
  4. Keep it complete. Leave the wheels, converter and engine in place, and mention anything already removed.
  5. Hand over the title with ID at pickup. Lost title? See selling with no title, then after you sell.
