Selling a non-running or junk Volvo S60

Four model years carry most of the S60's record at NHTSA. The 2001 through 2004 sedans hold 727 of the 1,270 complaints owners have filed, and fuel system complaints top the list on the first two. If you own one of those early cars and it no longer runs, it can go as it is.

Known problems in each S60 generation

These S60 numbers are owner complaints NHTSA logged up to October 10, 2026. The latest S60 years simply haven't been driven as long.

First generation, 2000-2009

Wikipedia says the first S60 replaced the S70 and was built from 2000 to 2009 on the P2 platform, shared with the S80, V70 and XC90. Engines were 2.0, 2.3 and 2.4-liter five-cylinders, two of them turbocharged, with manuals or a 5-speed Aisin automatic.

This generation holds 841 complaints. The 2001 has 66 about the gasoline fuel system and 36 about speed control. The 2004 has 50 about the engine and its cooling, plus 12 crashes and 12 fires reported. Recalls that match those systems:

  • Fuel pump (09V483000) on 2001-2004 S60s in certain states. The campaign also takes in S80, V70, XC70 and XC90 models.
  • Fuel pressure sensor (07V226000) on 2003-2004 cars, which could send a wrong reading to the engine computer.
  • Throttle and limp-home software (06V441000) on 2001-2002 cars.
  • Driver air bag inflators that may explode during deployment: 21V766000 on 2001-2009 S60s, and 20V681000 on 2001-2003 cars in certain states.

From 2005 on, complaints drop to 113 across five years.

Second generation, 2010-2018

Built on the P3 platform. US engines listed by Wikipedia include 1.6 and 2.0-liter turbo fours, and the B5254T5 five-cylinder shows up in NHTSA's recall text. Transmissions include 6 and 8-speed Aisin automatics and a 6-speed Getrag dual-clutch.

The 2012 has 121 complaints and engine is named 55 times. The 2013 adds 87, with engine named 35 times. Recall 13V592000 covers 2011-2012 S60s with the B5254T5 engine built between June 22, 2010 and May 14, 2012: dealers update the software so the driver is warned about low oil pressure. Its 30,929 vehicles are all S60s. Recall 19V849000 replaces all four door latches on 2011-2017 S60 and V60 models because a part inside can break.

Third generation, 2019-2024

Wikipedia calls it the first Volvo built in the United States, at Ridgeville, South Carolina. US production ended in June 2024. Engines are 2.0-liter fours, turbo or twincharged, with plug-in hybrid versions. Only 83 complaints sit on these six years. Recalls are shared across many Volvos, such as emergency braking software on 2019-2020 cars (20V144000) and rearview camera software on 2023-2025 cars (25V282000, listed at 413,151 vehicles).

Fix the S60, or sell it?

Weigh the quote against what the car would sell for running. If those numbers are close, selling it as it sits saves the gamble.

  1. First, enter your S60's VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup. Open recall work doesn't stop a sale; our open recall guide explains why.
  2. 2011-2013 engine trouble? Ask a Volvo dealer whether the oil pressure recall was done. If the engine is gone, read blown engine.
  3. Early car stalling or limping? The fuel pump, fuel pressure sensor and throttle recalls above are worth ruling out first.

Selling your S60 as it sits

  1. Note the VIN, mileage and the problem. Say which engine it has if you know.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Describe where the sedan is parked and whether it rolls or steers, so the truck comes ready.
  4. Don't strip it. Wheels, converter and battery stay. Tell us if anything is missing.
  5. On S60 pickup day, have the title in hand and a photo ID ready to show. Check after you sell for plates. Lost the title? See selling with no title.

Which S60 years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2001 (223), 2004 (198) and 2002 (186), as of October 10, 2026. On the second generation, the 2012 leads with 121. The latest S60s are new enough that owners haven't filed many reports on them yet.
What is the oil pressure recall on the 2011-2012 S60?
NHTSA recall 13V592000 covers 2011-2012 S60s built June 22, 2010 through May 14, 2012 with the 5-cylinder B5254T5 engine. Dealers update the software so the driver gets a warning in a low oil pressure situation. Check your VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls.
Can I sell my S60 if the engine has already let go?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Sell the whole car as it sits and tell us what happened to the engine.
Are there air bag recalls on the first S60?
Yes. Recall 21V766000 covers 2001-2009 S60s and 2001-2006 S80s for a driver's air bag inflator that may explode during deployment. Recall 20V681000 covers 2001-2003 S60 and S80 cars sold or registered in certain states. A Volvo dealer swaps the S60's air bag at no cost.
