Selling a junk or broken-down Volvo V50
Thirty of the Volvo V50's 42 complaints to NHTSA are on its first two US model years, 2005 and 2006. Every complaint naming the engine and engine cooling, 6 in all, is on the 2005. Counts are as of October 10, 2026.

The wagon in short
Wikipedia calls the V50 the station wagon version of the S40, first shown at the 2003 Bologna Motor Show and built with it in Ghent, Belgium. Production ran 2004-2012 on the Volvo P1 platform. Wikipedia lists 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0-liter petrol fours, 5- and 6-speed manuals and a 5-speed Aisin automatic. The EPA lists front-drive and all-wheel-drive versions for 2005-2011.
Where the trouble clusters
2005-2007: engine, fuel and tires
These years hold 36 complaints. The 2005 leads with 18: engine and engine cooling 6, the fuel and propulsion system 3, electrical 2. The 2006 has 12, again led by fuel and propulsion at 3. On the 2007, 3 of 6 name tires, and one reports a fire.
The fuel complaints line up with two recalls:
- 06V137000 (2004-2006): on T5 turbo cars, a polyamide fuel line tube near the turbo and exhaust manifold is sensitive to extreme heat. Dealers swapped it for Teflon. The campaign's 16,175 vehicles include other models.
- 08V033000 (2004-2006): In some states, including Connecticut, Illinois, Michigan, New York and Ohio, V50s sold or registered there could see rust on a fuel pump part that the recall calls the PEM. Dealers replaced it and moved it to a new spot. That campaign covers 23,000 vehicles across models.
The 2007 also falls under 08V101000, a brake master cylinder seal that may leak fluid inside. Its 1,114 vehicles include the C30, C70 and S40.
2008-2011: few complaints, more recalls
Only 6 complaints across these four years, and none on the 2008. Recalls still reached them:
- 08V197000: roof rail bolts out of spec on 7 V50s from 2008. It is the only campaign here limited to the V50.
- 08V329000 (2008-2009): a power steering return hose that may rupture. 1,020 vehicles, models not broken out.
- 10V591000 (2009-2011): the power passenger seat's end stop may let the seat travel too far forward. 7,420 vehicles across models.
- 10V255000 (2010): a gearshift lever stud on 6-speed manuals. 536 vehicles, C30 and S40 included.
- 10V566000 (2005-2010): an overheating battery in the Garmin 760 portable GPS.

Repair or sell?
Enter your V50's VIN on NHTSA's recall lookup. If a 2005 or 2006 still has an open fuel recall, ask a dealer about it. If a 2005 is overheating, read head gasket or overheating before paying for a diagnosis. A wagon parked for years is its own case: see car sitting for years.
Selling a V50 as it sits
- Gather the VIN, mileage and what's wrong.
- Ask for an offer, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Say where your V50 is and if it can roll. A flat or a seized wheel changes how we load it.
- Leave the parts on, roof rails included, and mention anything missing.
- Bring the title and ID to pickup. After you sell covers plates and insurance.
