Selling an old or broken-down Volvo V40
Brakes are the story on the Volvo V40 wagon. V40 owners had sent NHTSA 71 complaints by October 10, 2026, and 31 point to the hydraulic service brakes. The first year, the 2000, holds 23 of those, and it is also the year of a brake vacuum pump recall.

Known problems by model year
EPA data lists the V40 as a small gas station wagon for the 2000 to 2004 model years.
2000: brakes, engine and suspension
The 2000 has 50 of the model's 71 complaints. On the V40, hydraulic brakes come first at 23. Engine and engine cooling follow at 8, and suspension at 7. Recall 03V474000 matches the brake pattern: water could enter the electric brake vacuum pump and cause it to fail. Dealers replaced the pump with an improved one and moved it. That recall lists 36,000 vehicles, called only passenger vehicles, so the figure might cover more than the V40.
2001-2002: fewer complaints, two recalls
The 2001 has 11 complaints (brakes 4, engine 3) and the 2002 has 4. For the 2001 V40, campaign 01V169000 deals with a climate control diode that wore out sooner. For the V40, dealers fixed it by fitting an adapter at the heater fan motor. Its 19,000 vehicles include sedans as well as wagons. Campaign 03V284000, which reaches 2001-2004 cars, sent owners a missing second ISOFIX child-seat guide. That count, 220,407, covers several models.
2003-2004: fuel rail and vacuum hose
Only 6 complaints between these two years. Recall 03V424000 covers a fuel rail on 2003-2004 sedans and wagons that could leak at a poor weld; dealers added a V-clamp. On the 2004, 04V493000 covers a brake vacuum non-return valve that could crack, and dealers inspected and replaced the hose as needed.
Complaints and recalls by year
We counted the V40 numbers from NHTSA complaint records downloaded on October 10, 2026. Some V40 recalls appear in two or more year rows, so that column adds to more than 5.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Recall campaigns | Top component |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2000 | 50 | 2 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (23) |
| 2001 | 11 | 1 | 2 | Hydraulic brakes (4) |
| 2002 | 4 | 0 | 1 | Hydraulic brakes (2) |
| 2003 | 2 | 0 | 2 | Seat belts, brakes (1 each) |
| 2004 | 4 | 1 | 3 | Brakes, lines and fittings (1 each) |
Fix or sell?
- Enter your V40's VIN on NHTSA's recall page. On a 2000, ask whether the vacuum pump was ever moved and replaced.
- Hard pedal or weak brakes? That fits the vacuum pump and hose recalls. See bad or seized brakes.
- Smell fuel under the hood of a 2003 or 2004? Don't drive it; check whether the fuel rail clamp was installed.
- Over 20 years old and needing more than it's worth? Old or high mileage helps you decide.

Questions people ask
- What is the most common complaint on the Volvo V40?
- It's the hydraulic service brakes, cited in 31 of 71 V40 complaints NHTSA had on October 10, 2026. For the 2000 alone it's 23 of 50.
- Was there a brake recall on the V40?
- Two. Campaign 03V474000 is for the 2000 model year. Water could leak into the electric brake vacuum pump and kill it, so dealers put a better pump in a new location. Campaign 04V493000 covers the 2004: a non-return valve could crack and leak vacuum. Both campaign counts may include other models.
- Will you buy a V40 that won't pass inspection?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us what failed and whether it still drives.
