Getting rid of a dead car in Wauwatosa

Wisconsin often separates a stored car from an abandoned one by a single test: can the public see it? Under chapter 342, a car hidden from ordinary public view does not qualify as abandoned. So for a Wauwatosa family with a lifeless sedan out front, the first decision may simply be garage or not. Ready to move on? We buy whole non-running and junk cars. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

What governs a parked car in Wauwatosa

No Wauwatosa vehicle ordinance turned up when we searched online. That leaves state law on this page, plus whatever the city keeps locally, since Wisconsin allows each municipality and county to legislate on hauling away and disposing of abandoned cars.

The statute prohibits leaving a car somewhere so that it looks abandoned. Except in first-class cities, local officials decide the stretch of time before an unattended car is legally abandoned and a nuisance. A municipal or county official can also declare a particular car not abandoned. When one gets towed, its owner covers the abandonment, impound and disposal bills.

A car that is truly done

WisDOT offers a clean ending: the word Junk, written across the title. Think first, because it is permanent. Later repairs change nothing; no title or registration will be issued for it again. If the title has gone missing, the DMV lets you junk the car without ordering a duplicate. By statute, whoever owns or keeps a junk vehicle then has 10 days to tell the department and return the title.

Could your buyer put it back on the road? Then leave off the Junk notation. Complete the reverse like any sale: sign, date, record the miles in the odometer box, mark the brand disclosure, enter the price, then fill in the purchaser and their home address.

AND, OR, and a lender

Check the word linking the owners' names on the front. AND means every owner must sign. OR lets any single listed owner sign. A recorded lien means your buyer also needs a release from the lender; see lien still on the title.

Plates

WisDOT says it flatly: plates do not stay on a sold or junked car or light truck. Unexpired plates can migrate to a comparable car you own; if not, wreck them. Plates that left with the car get cancelled using form MV2514, the License Plates Cancellation Application. Then, if an individual bought it from you, file the seller report within 30 days.

Getting an offer

Online or by calling (877) 421-6008, give us the basics: maker, model, model year, rough mileage, if it cranks, and the title's whereabouts. Our driver can find the car at home near Hoyt Park, in an employer's lot, or at a repair garage.

Questions people ask

Would a dead car in my Wauwatosa garage count as abandoned?
Under state law, no: a car hidden from ordinary public view is not treated as abandoned. We couldn't find Wauwatosa's ordinances online, and the city may have extra rules.
Two names are on our title. Who has to sign?
Look at the joining word. AND requires every owner's signature; OR lets one listed owner sign alone.
The plates went with the car. How do I fix that?
WisDOT directs sellers to form MV2514, the License Plates Cancellation Application.
