West Allis: options for a car that quit
West Allis packs 60,119 people onto just 11.381 square miles. With houses that tight, a stalled car is easy for neighbors to see. Under state law, a vehicle kept out of ordinary public view isn't treated as abandoned. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You can sell the whole car as it sits and skip guessing how long it may stay put.

State law fills the gap here
Searching online, we came up empty on West Allis's own vehicle ordinances. So everything below comes from Wisconsin statutes, and local rules can still exist: state law expressly lets cities and counties adopt their own removal and disposal ordinances for abandoned cars. Got a letter from city hall already? Follow it. Our notice to remove a car page explains the usual demands.
Chapter 342 forbids leaving any vehicle so that it seems deserted. The fixed 48-hour limit in that chapter covers only first-class cities. Other municipalities pick their own number of hours or days before an unattended car turns into a public nuisance. A car hidden from ordinary public view escapes that label, and so does one an official has designated not abandoned.
Towing, storage, and who pays
Once taken, such a vehicle waits in storage for its owner or for disposal. Should the tow bill plus storage top what the car could bring, the law permits junking or selling it early. Mostly whole cars past 19 model years get separate disposal rules. The bill for abandonment, impound and disposal lands on the owner. The officer who calls the tow has a 24-hour deadline to tell the towing firm who holds title and any liens. Our towed or impounded guide covers getting a car released.
Junk, written on the title
Scrapping a car here takes one word. Print Junk across the title. No title? WisDOT does not require a duplicate before junking. Be sure first. Afterward no new title or plates are possible for it, whoever repairs it. Whoever owns or holds a junk vehicle also has 10 days, by statute, to inform the department and turn in the title.
Titles in Wisconsin are a state document, handled by the DMV inside WisDOT rather than by any county. If a lender is listed, add the lender's release to the paperwork.
Plates first, then the online report
Unscrew the plates before anything else. West Allis owners with time left on their plates can switch them to a similar car titled to you, your spouse or your partner. Otherwise, cut them apart; the DMV does not want them mailed in.
Sold it to a private individual? Within 30 days, file the seller notification online with the sale date, the price, who bought it and the VIN. More in after you sell.
Milwaukee County testing
Emission testing applies in seven southeastern counties, Milwaukee County among them. When a test is required, WisDOT sends the owner a notice.

Questions people ask
- When does a stalled car in West Allis become abandoned?
- We found no West Allis ordinance online, so the city could set its own limit. The statute's fixed 48 hours covers only first-class cities, and other places choose their own period. Cars hidden from ordinary public view fall outside the statute's definition.
- Lost the title. Can a West Allis car still be scrapped?
- Yes. WisDOT lets you junk a car without first ordering a duplicate title. Junking is final, though: no fresh title or registration later, fixed or not.
- What happens to my West Allis plates after the sale?
- Off the car and back to you. Move unexpired ones to another car of the same type in your, your spouse's or your partner's name, or cut them apart. The DMV does not want them mailed in.
