Selling a junk car in Gillette

The Gillette city code we read has no section that defines a junk car. What it does have is a towing and impoundment article that reaches cars parked on snow routes, with the owner paying "all reasonable charges for the towing and storage of the vehicle in addition to any penalty." For a dead car elsewhere in Gillette, this page leans on Wyoming law; Gillette could also have ordinances our search missed. Either way, we buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, and free pickup anywhere in the US covers Campbell County.

Snow routes and towing in Gillette

The city's towing article speaks of efforts to "identify the owners of vehicles parked on Snow Routes to relocate their vehicles," and it lists a vehicle parked on a snow route during a snow event as grounds for removal. Without a working engine, nobody can simply drive it off the route. If yours sits on a posted route, that is the first problem to solve. Whoever is entitled to the car can recover it from where it was taken, after paying the towing and storage charges.

Wyoming's tests, since the city's are not on file

  • Abandoned. A vehicle left on private property more than 30 days without consent is abandoned under state law. After an impound notice is posted, the line is 24 hours for a car on a highway and 5 days on other public or private property.
  • Junk. A wrecked, damaged, disabled or apparently inoperable vehicle that has been abandoned and has a fair market value under $2,000.
  • After impound. Junk-value cars go to licensed disposal facilities or public auction. Cars worth $2,000 or more are auctioned by the sheriff 30 days after notice, with the sale advertised at least 10 days ahead.

If a stranger's car is the one on your land, see car abandoned on your property.

The Campbell County Clerk

Gillette is the Campbell County seat, which is where Wyoming puts its title clerks. The office we checked is at 500 S. Gillette Ave., Suite 1600, phone (307) 682-7285. In a straight line, that's about 1 mile north of central Gillette. For plates, Campbell County residents go to the treasurer rather than the clerk. Statewide rules come from WYDOT.

Signing over a Wyoming title

Sign and date the assignment in front of a notary, list any liens, and give it to the buyer with the car. On a title reading or/and, both owners sign before the notary. Any vehicle built in the past 10 years needs an odometer statement. Your plates were sold to you, not the car, so take them along; they and their remaining credit can go on your next vehicle. No title? Start with junk car with no title.

Sheridan is 80.7 miles away as the crow flies, Casper 107.1, Laramie 204.7, Cheyenne 220.1 and Rock Springs 263.9. See Wyoming for the state rules.

Getting an offer

Fill out the form or ring (877) 421-6008. Describe the car and its miles, say if the engine starts, and tell us which title you hold. Tell us if the car sits on a Gillette snow route.

Questions people ask

Does Gillette have its own junk-car ordinance?
Our search of the Gillette code turned up none, so state law fills the gap here. Ask the city before you rely on that, since an ordinance could exist outside what we read.
A stranger's car has sat on my Gillette property for weeks. Can I sell it?
Not by signing a title you do not hold. Wyoming law lets the owner or person in control of private property sell a vehicle left there over 30 days without consent at public auction or after a court action.
Where do I get a duplicate title in Campbell County?
From the county clerk. The office we checked is at 500 S. Gillette Ave., Suite 1600, phone (307) 682-7285. One owner named on the title applies with an affidavit describing the loss.
