Selling an old Audi 200, running or not

Owners have filed only 18 complaints with NHTSA about the Audi 200 across its three US model years, and five of them report a fire. Four of those five are on the 1991. For a car this old, that is the detail worth checking first if yours smells of fuel or burning.

Where the 200 fits in Audi's lineup

The 200 shares a Wikipedia article with the Audi 100, its sister sedan. The EPA lists it for 1989-1991 as the 200, the 200 quattro, the 200 quattro 20v and quattro wagons. Those years fall at the end of the Volkswagen Group C3 platform, which Wikipedia dates 1982–1991 in Germany, assembled at Neckarsulm and related to the Audi V8. Wikipedia lists the A6 as the successor. In 1993 the line was mildly restyled and renamed the A6 series.

What the 1989-1991 records show

All three years are one generation, so they read best together.

The 1991 stands out. Ten complaints, eight naming equipment and four reporting a fire. One more names the hydraulic brakes and one the electrical system.

The earlier two are quieter. The 1989's five complaints include one crash, one fire, two about exterior lighting, one about air bags and one about engine cooling. The 1990's three are mostly vehicle speed control.

The recall that matters most mechanically is 93V006000. Audi found the transaxle's gear oil slowly vanishing by evaporation; a 200 run low that way chews through its differential bearings and gears. Dealers swapped in a better oil. The campaign reaches back to 1988, and its 152,000 total includes other Audis.

Recall 97V172000 replaced air bag sensor control modules on 1989-1992 cars because some would not hold up as long as Audi required. Its 54,800 vehicles also span more than one model.

The other three are smaller. 91V050000 corrected a trunk label that gave the wrong instructions for the jack. 91V156000 added the missing capacity weight to the placard inside the gas filler door on 1990 cars. 01V324000 replaced rear speaker amplifiers on 1991-1992 cars, whose capacitors could leak electrolyte and, with humidity, create an unwanted conductive path.

You can look up any of these by model year at NHTSA's recall page.

Fix it or sell it?

On a car built more than 35 years ago, the question is rarely one repair. It is how many. Get a written quote for what's wrong now, and ask what else the shop found while it was in there. Weigh that sum against the asking price of a running 200 with the same body and drivetrain.

A grinding or whining noise from the driveline on a 200 that never had the differential oil campaign done is worth a look before you decide. For a 200 that hasn't turned a wheel in ages, the car sitting for years guide covers what usually needs attention. The old or high mileage guide covers when age alone settles it.

Selling it as it sits

  1. Find the title and note the VIN, which body style it is, and whether it's a quattro.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us where the car is, a carport, a backyard, a storage unit, and whether it rolls on its own tires, so the truck can load it.
  4. Leave it whole. Anything already pulled, like a radio or a wheel, belongs in your description because it affects the offer.

Other older Audis we cover: the 100, 5000, V8 and every Audi model.

Questions people ask

Which Audi 200 year has the most NHTSA complaints?
The 1991 holds 10 of the 18 in NHTSA's file on October 10, 2026; eight cite equipment and four mention a fire. Recent cars have had little time to build a record, but a 200 has had more than thirty years.
What was the Audi 200 differential oil recall?
Under recall 93V006000, Audi said the gear oil in the transaxle's differential slowly evaporates, and running it low grinds down bearings and gears. Dealers drained it and put in a better grade. That campaign's 152,000 figure takes in other Audi models as well, not 200s alone.
Will you buy a 200 that has sat for years?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention roughly when it last ran, if the tires are flat, and what it's parked on.
What replaced the Audi 200?
Wikipedia lists the Audi A6 as its successor. In 1993 the line was mildly restyled and renamed the Audi A6 series.
