Selling a dead or junk Audi
Yes, a dead Audi can be sold as it is. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and that includes an A4 with a failed engine, a Q7 that will not shift and an e-tron that will not charge. Nothing has to come off it first.

Below: where Audi came from, the 1980s episode that hurt its US sales, what owners have filed with NHTSA model by model, and all 27 Audi nameplates the EPA has rated since 1984.
Four rings, three founding dates
Wikipedia gives Audi three starts. August Horch founded it in Zwickau on 16 July 1909. Auto Union, the four-ring group Audi joined, dates from 29 June 1932 in Chemnitz. The company was set up again in Ingolstadt on 3 September 1949, after the war left the Zwickau plant in East Germany. That plant later built the Trabant.
Volkswagen came in during the 1960s. It bought a 50% holding in 1964, including the new Ingolstadt factory, and took full control about eighteen months later. At first it wanted the plant for its own cars: by 1966 Ingolstadt was assembling an extra 60,000 Beetles a year. Then a merger with NSU created Audi NSU Auto Union AG on 1 January 1969. That brought Audi back as a brand of its own for the first time since before the war.
Two plant facts still matter to Audi owners today. Neckarsulm, the old NSU factory, builds the larger A6 and A8. And in 2021 Zwickau began building the Q4 e-tron, the first Audis made there in over 80 years.
The Audi 5000 story
Audi's US sales dropped in the 1980s after a string of Audi 5000 recalls running from 1982 to 1987. The recalls were tied to reports of sudden unintended acceleration that were linked to six deaths and 700 accidents. At the same time, NHTSA was studying 50 models from 20 makers for sudden power surges.
Wikipedia quotes NHTSA's technical analysis as finding that "Audi idle-stabilization systems were prone to defects which resulted in excessive idle speeds and brief unanticipated accelerations of up to 0.3g." That analysis also said these could not be the only cause of the longer incidents, though they may have triggered some by startling the driver.
A 1980s 5000 that turns up now is a 40-year-old car. NHTSA's public complaint file holds 45 complaints for it.
Which Audis owners complain about most
The counts below come from NHTSA's public file of owner complaints, tallied per Audi model on October 10, 2026. Each one is what a driver chose to report; NHTSA has not ruled on it. Audi models sold in big numbers for many years gather more reports just from time on the road, while the newest Audis haven't been out long enough to gather many.
| Model | NHTSA complaints | Years in the EPA list |
|---|---|---|
| A4 | 3,866 | 1992-2025 |
| A6 | 1,876 | 1995-2026 |
| Q5 | 1,560 | 2009-2027 |
| Q7 | 1,064 | 2007-2026 |
| A3 | 1,003 | 2006-2027 |
| A5 | 555 | 2008-2027 |
What stands out:
- The A4 is far ahead. Its 3,866 complaints are more than twice the A6's. It is also Audi's longest-running current name in the list, back to 1992.
- Five models hold most of the file. The A4, A6, Q5, Q7 and A3 together account for 9,369 complaints. No other Audi reaches 600.
- The electric models are low, and young. The six e-tron models together have 307. The original e-tron has 176. The A6 e-tron and Q8 e-tron have none yet, and the A6 e-tron's first model year is 2027.
- The 1980s and early 1990s cars barely register. The V8 has 11, the 4000 has 13 and the Coupe has 15.
Selling a dead Audi whole
No need to repair or clear out your Audi first. We take it whole, as it sits. If it does not run at all, our guide to selling a car that won't run covers the choices. For an e-tron with a battery problem, see when an EV battery fails.
- Find the year, model and mileage. The model badge sits on the trunk lid; the year is printed on the title or registration.
- Let us know if your Audi's engine turns over, if its wheels roll freely, and what is damaged or gone.
- Make sure you have the Audi's title. If it's missing, see selling a junk car with no title.
- Say where the Audi is waiting for our truck, like your garage, the street by your house, or the shop where it broke down.
Pickup is free anywhere in the US. Once it is gone, handle the plates and paperwork.

Questions people ask
- Will you take an Audi that won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, Audis included. Sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
- Which Audi has the most NHTSA complaints?
- The A4 leads with 3,866 owner complaints as of October 10, 2026. Next comes the A6 with 1,876. The A4 has been sold since the early 1990s, so it has had far more years and cars to collect them than a newer model.
- Who owns Audi?
- Volkswagen Group. Volkswagen bought half of the business in 1964 and took full control about eighteen months later. Audi's headquarters is in Ingolstadt, Germany.
- Do you buy electric Audis too?
- Yes. An e-tron, e-tron GT or Q4 e-tron that no longer drives is still a whole car. We pick it up for free anywhere in the US, as it sits.
