Selling a junk or non-running Audi A6
The 1999 A6 holds more owner complaints than any other A6 year: 217 in NHTSA's file, by our count on October 10, 2026. Twenty-three of them report a fire, and two report a death. Most A6 years are far quieter, but a 25-year-old luxury sedan with a wiring or fuel problem rarely earns back a big repair. If yours has quit, sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

The A6 by the numbers
Every A6 complaint in NHTSA's file on our October 10, 2026 pull, S6 and RS 6 included. Because campaigns overlap model years, the recall column totals more than 60.

Problem patterns, generation by generation
Generation names and dates are from Wikipedia's A6 article. The A6 took over from the Audi 100, and Audi builds its larger cars, the A6 and A8, at Neckarsulm, Wikipedia says.
C4 and C5 (built 1994 to 2005): wiring and fuel
The C4 ran from 1994 to 1998 in Germany, with fours and a 2.2 turbo five. The C5 followed in 1997 and ran to 2005. The late-1990s cars carry the A6's worst record. Two recalls cover headlight switch shorts on 1998-2004 A6s. In 04V133, a driver's knees pushing on the knee bolster under the dash could reach the headlight switch wiring and short it. In 06V198, connector pins in the switch on cars with halogen low beams could touch each other. Those campaigns count 172,866 and 70,512 vehicles.
Fuel is the other thread. Recall 01V157 replaced fuel level sending units on 1998-2001 cars after sulfur in gasoline built up on their contacts. Recall 08V157 reinforced a cracking rollover valve on 2001-2004 A6 quattros with the 2.7, 2.8 or 3.0. That campaign's 68,240 count includes the allroad. The 2003 adds a suspension spike: 31 of its 111 complaints. Tie rods (99V248, 00V414) and driver air bag inflators on 1998-2000 cars (20V056) were also recalled.
C6 (built February 2004 to June 2011): air bags
From 2005 to 2011, air bags top every year's complaints. They are 42 of the 2005's 91 complaints and 49 of the 2008's 73. Passenger inflator recalls 16V382 and 18V427 both cover 2005-2011 A6s. 16V382 only applies where the car was first sold, or has ever been registered, in specific states. Alabama, California, Florida and Georgia head that list. Both campaigns include the A4, so their 194,453 and 237,947 counts are not the A6's alone.
C7 (versions listed 2012 to 2018): engine complaints
Wikipedia lists an A6 hybrid from 2012 to 2014 and a C7 facelift from 2015 to 2018. The engine leads complaints on the 2013 (39 of 94), 2014 and 2016 (24 of 70). Recall 18V229 replaced coolant pumps on 2012-2015 cars with the 2.0. 19V035 replaced leaking fuel rails on 2016-2018 A6s, A7s and Q7s. 18V370 added a repair kit to the passenger occupant sensor on 2012-2018 cars with basic seats.
Fifth generation (from 2019): electrical
The 2019 jumps to 114 complaints, 77 of them electrical. Recall 22V861 adds a protective cover because liquid spilled in the rear seat could get in and cause trouble, on 2019-2022 A6 sedans and related models. The 2021 has 13 recall campaigns, the most of any A6 year. 25V900, a rearview camera software fix, spans 2019-2026 Audis. Its 356,894-vehicle count covers many models.
Sell it whole, step by step
- Gather the VIN, mileage and the problem. Note whether it rolls, steers and brakes.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it's parked. A carport, a tight alley, a storage lot or a repair shop's lot are all fine. The truck comes to it, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the A6 whole. Don't pull the wheels, battery or catalytic converter, and tell us about any part that is already off.
- At pickup, sign the A6's title over, give the driver the keys and show your ID. Lost title? See selling with no title.
Is it worth fixing first?
Weigh the repair quote against what the A6 would sell for running. Close to even, or worse, points to selling it as it sits.
- Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls. Coolant pumps, fuel rails and air bag parts on A6s have been recall work.
- Smell of fuel or a burned harness? Don't drive it. If fire already got to it, read fire damage.
- Dead modules on a 2019? Electrical problems covers when chasing faults stops making sense.
- Engine knock on a C7? See blown engine and repairs that cost more than the car.
Questions people ask
- Why does the 1999 A6 stand out?
- It has 217 complaints, tallied October 10, 2026, the most of any A6 year. Twenty-three of them report a fire. Together they list 15 injured people and 2 deaths. Several recalls from that era deal with headlight switch wiring and fuel sending units.
- Does the newest A6 have fewer problems?
- It has fewer complaints so far: 2022 through 2026 together have 39. Recent cars simply haven't been on the road long, so expect that count to grow.
- Can I sell an A6 that burned or won't start?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, burned ones included, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Describe the damage when you ask for an offer.
