Selling an old Audi Coupe GT or Coupe quattro

Two different Coupes under one name

1984-1988: the Giugiaro Coupe GT

Wikipedia dates the two-door B2 coupé 1980–1988. Giorgetto Giugiaro designed it, Audi built it in Ingolstadt, and it shared the B2 platform with the Audi 80/4000. Engines listed include 1921 cc and 1994 cc inline fives. The EPA names for these years are Coupe GT and Quattro.

Owners filed just two complaints on these years: one on a 1985 naming the seats and one on a 1987 naming the structure. The recalls say more.

• 89V006000 (1984-1989, 35,000 vehicles in the campaign): fuel injection seals may harden from heat and the alcohol in some fuels, and let fuel escape into the engine compartment. The fix added improved seals plus insulation against fire risk.
• 87V069000 (1985-1986, 25,000 vehicles): excessive wear of the idle stabilizer could cause the idle to fluctuate. Dealers replaced it. The same campaign appears on the 4000, so the count is not Coupes alone.

1990-1991: the B3 Coupe quattro

The second Coupe is a three-door liftback that Wikipedia dates 1988–1996 on the B3 platform. Wikipedia calls the 1991 car no lightweight: 3,308 lb against 164 hp, a little less than the European version made.

These two years carry almost every complaint. The 1990's seven include two on seat belts, two on vehicle speed control and one on the gasoline fuel system. The 1991's six include two on hydraulic brakes, one on visibility and one on equipment.

• 90V070000 (1990, 6,600 vehicles): steering lock bolts made improperly could break if the driver forces a locked steering wheel. Dealers replaced the whole steering lock.
• 90V069000 (1990, 600 vehicles): a clip on the front seat back hinges may not seat because the seat cover gets in the way.
• 97V172000 (1989-1992, 54,800 vehicles): Audi found some air bag sensors would not last as long as its own standard required, so dealers fitted a new control module. The campaign count may include other models.

Keep going or let it go

A parked Coupe rarely has just the one problem that put it there. A fuel smell under the hood on an 1980s car points straight at the 89V006000 seals, so check whether that campaign was ever done before you start it again. On a 1990, a steering lock that won't release is the part covered by 90V070000.
