Selling a dead or junk Audi TT
Nearly six in ten Audi TT complaints at NHTSA come from two model years. Owners filed 330 complaints on the 2000-2023 TT as of October 10, 2026, and 193 of them are on the 2000 and 2001 cars. The 2001 alone has 120, and 64 of those name the electrical system.

What each generation drew
Audi built 662,762 TTs from February 1998 to November 2023, with final assembly at its plant in Győr, Hungary, according to Wikipedia. Three generations reached US buyers.
First generation (8N), the 2000-2006 cars
Wikipedia lists one engine for this TT, a 1.8-liter 20-valve turbo four, with a 5- or 6-speed manual or a 6-speed Tiptronic automatic. These seven model years hold 284 of the TT's 330 complaints.
Electrical. It is the top component on the 2000 through 2003. In May 2008, Wikipedia notes, a class action reached a nationwide settlement over allegedly defective instrument clusters on 2000-2005 TTs, and owners got a two-year cluster warranty extension.
Handling. The car's first big recall came in late 1999, on the 2000 model year. Campaign 99V300 (6,200 vehicles) replaced the front stabilizers, and the rear ones on quattro cars, for steering response in sharp high-speed turns. Wikipedia adds that coupes and roadsters were recalled in late 1999 and early 2000 to get stability control, a rear spoiler and suspension changes. Campaign 01V325 replaced rear track control arms on 2000-2001 cars because moisture could corrode the bushing and bolt.
Air bags. The 2000-2001 TT is in two driver air bag inflator campaigns, 20V056 and 21V470. Their counts (106,857 and 62,812 vehicles) cover whole campaigns that also include A4, A6, A8 and S4 models.
Timing belts. Wikipedia records a June 2007 class action alleging that timing belts on 1999-2003 Audi and Volkswagen cars with the 1.8-liter turbo failed before the owner's manual service interval.
The 2004 is the odd year: 16 of its 25 complaints name the power train, and campaign 04V007 (145 vehicles in all) replaced the clutch on certain 2004 cars with the direct shift gearbox after a weld seam was found below spec.
Second generation (8J), built 2006 to 2014
Engines grew to a 1.8 and 2.0 TFSI four, a 3.2 VR6, and a 2.5 five-cylinder in the TT RS. Complaints fall off sharply: the 2007-2015 model years hold 37 between them, and none are on file for 2014 or 2015. On the 2008, 2009 and 2010, power train complaints outnumber every other category.
Three recalls cover these years. Campaign 08V064 fitted better C-pillar trim clips to 720 TT coupes from 2008. Campaign 09V333 reprogrammed the transmission computer on 2009 cars whose DSG temperature sensor wiring could be faulty; its 16,000 vehicles include other Volkswagen Group cars. On 2008-2010 cars, campaign 09V377 swapped in an improved fuel tank ventilation valve; its 10,200 vehicles include the A3.
Third generation (FV/8S), sold in the US from model year 2016
Wikipedia lists 1.8-liter and 2.0-liter turbo fours for this TT, a 2.5-liter five in the TT RS, and a 6-speed manual or a 6- or 7-speed S tronic. Only 9 complaints are on file for these years. Most recalls here are air bags and fuel parts: 19V014 and 22V543 replace front air bag parts on 2016-2017 cars (both campaigns span many VW Group models), and 20V076 caps a fuel tank heat shield bracket on 8,572 TT quattros from 2016-2019. Audi dropped the TT RS in the US after 2022 and ended the TT in 2023.
Owner complaints and recall campaigns, year by year
We took these TT numbers from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. A recall shows on each TT year it covers, so the same one can fill several rows.

Repair it or sell it?
Price the repair, then price a running TT from the same year with similar miles. If the first number creeps toward the second, sell the car as it sits instead.
- Start with the recall lookup at NHTSA. On 2000-2001 cars, check the air bag inflator campaigns before anything else.
- Early 1.8T that died suddenly? A snapped belt is one possibility. Our broken timing belt guide covers how to judge it.
- Dead gauges or warning lights? See electrical problems for what tends to be worth chasing.
- Slipping or jerky DSG? The dual-clutch guide explains the symptoms.
Selling a TT whole
- Note the TT's VIN, odometer reading and symptoms, plus whether it's the coupe or the roadster.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot it's sitting in, such as a garage, driveway or street, and whether the wheels turn. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep the TT complete. If the wheels or anything else are already off, say so up front.
- As your TT leaves, our driver collects its title and looks at your photo ID. Can't find the title? Read selling with no title first. Plate rules by state are in after you sell.
Questions people ask
- Which Audi TT model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- Owners have logged 120 against the 2001 TT, the most of any year, through October 10, 2026. The 2000 follows at 73 and the 2002 at 38. Third-generation TTs, from model year 2016 on, have very few, in part because they are younger cars with fewer years of reports.
- Does my 2000 or 2001 TT still have an open air bag recall?
- It might. Two campaigns, 20V056 and 21V470, replace the driver's air bag inflator on 2000-2001 TTs. Enter the TT's VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, then ask an Audi dealer about any campaign listed as open.
- Will you buy a TT that doesn't run?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, coupes and roadsters alike, and pickup is free anywhere in the US. Tell us what's wrong and whether it rolls.
- Should I pull parts off my TT before selling it?
- No. Sell the whole car as it sits. The offer assumes a TT with its wheels, seats and converter still on, so flag anything that has already been pulled.
