Selling a dead or junk Audi Q3
The 2020 Audi Q3 has more owner complaints at NHTSA than any other Q3 year: 65 of the 237 filed on 2015-2026 Q3s, counted as of October 10, 2026. Twenty-one of those name the electrical system. And one month before that count, Audi added a steering recall that reaches back to the 2019-2021 cars.

Three generations, three different records
First generation (8U): the 2015-2018 Q3s
Audi built this Q3 from June 2011 to 2018, at SEAT's plant in Martorell, Spain, and in China, India and Brazil, according to Wikipedia. US sales in the EPA data start with the 2015, the facelift year with a wider chrome grille surround. Wikipedia lists 1.4-liter and 2.0-liter turbo fours and a 2.5-liter five.
These four years hold 85 complaints. Engine is the top component on the 2015 and 2018. The recalls lean on lights and software, and three of them count only Q3s:
- 17V400: on 24,754 Q3s from 2016-2017, using the parking brake during an emergency stop doesn't turn on the brake lights. Dealers update the software.
- 19V385: on 23,241 Q3s from 2016-2018 with LED headlights, a dead front turn signal may not light a warning for the driver.
- 15V200: on 3,646 Q3s from 2015, shutting the car off while the sunroof closes can cause trouble; dealers update the sunroof module software.
Second generation (F3): built August 2018 to June 2025
This Q3 moved to Audi Hungaria in Győr. Wikipedia lists 1.4 and 1.5-liter TFSI four-cylinder engines for the Q3. Power goes through an 8-speed Tiptronic or a 6- or 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearbox. Across the 2019-2025 Q3 model years there are 147 complaints, mostly against the 2020 and 2022.
The 2022's top complaint component is the fuel and propulsion system, with 7. That year and the 2021 share campaign 22V673: on 13,004 Q3s, the vent pipe inside the fuel tank may have been damaged at assembly, and dealers inspect it and replace the canister and tank if needed.
Other recalls on these years:
- 26V590 (2019-2021): a steering rack mounting bolt may corrode and break. Reported September 11, 2026; owner letters are expected November 10. The 208,724 vehicles include 2018 Tiguans and 2018-2019 Atlases, not only Q3s.
- 20V273 (2019): the passenger air bag may not deploy properly through the dash tear seam. 3,024 Q3s.
- 20V786 (2020): the brake pedal plate can bend or detach in a sudden stop. 313 Q3s.
- Rearview camera: 21V825 and 22V064 on 2022 cars, and 25V082 on 2024-2025 cars. The 25V082 count of 29,569 includes Tiguan and Arteon models.
- 22V815 (2019): tire pressure monitor software. Its 296,044 vehicles span many Volkswagen models.
Third generation (FJ): built from July 2025
Built in Győr with a 7-speed S tronic. Only the 2026 model year is in the data so far: 5 complaints and one recall, 26V209. On 6,077 of these Q3s, the sunroof could be closed remotely from too far away to see it, and dealers update the software and the owner's manual. A 2026 Q3 is only just out, so its small count tells you very little so far.
Complaints and recalls for each Q3 year
Q3 numbers as NHTSA had them on October 10, 2026. Recalls are tallied under each Q3 year they name.
| Year | Complaints to NHTSA | Injuries reported | Recall campaigns | Leading component |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2015 | 23 | 1 | 2 | Engine (5) |
| 2016 | 28 | 0 | 3 | Electrical system (7) |
| 2017 | 8 | 0 | 3 | Three components, 2 each |
| 2018 | 26 | 0 | 1 | Engine (7) |
| 2019 | 10 | 0 | 4 | Electrical, fuel/propulsion (2 each) |
| 2020 | 65 | 0 | 3 | Electrical system (21) |
| 2021 | 15 | 2 | 3 | Three components, 2 each |
| 2022 | 33 | 2 | 5 | Fuel/propulsion system (7) |
| 2023 | 2 | 0 | 1 | Engine (2) |
| 2024 | 18 | 2 | 2 | Electrical system (5) |
| 2025 | 4 | 0 | 1 | Three components, 1 each |
| 2026 | 5 | 0 | 1 | Forward collision avoidance (2) |
Should you fix it?
Weigh the written repair quote against what the same Q3 would bring running. If the repair bill comes close to that Q3 figure, selling it unfixed usually leaves you ahead.

Questions people ask
- Which Q3 model year has the most complaints?
- The 2020. Owners filed 65 of the Q3's 237 complaints on it, by NHTSA's October 10, 2026 count. Electrical system is its top component, at 21. The 2022 is next with 33. Recent Q3s are too young to have piled up many reports yet.
- What is the Q3 steering bolt recall?
- Campaign 26V590, reported September 11, 2026, covers 2019-2021 Q3s. A bolt holding the steering rack to the subframe may corrode and break, and dealers replace the right-side bolt. Owner letters are expected around November 10. The 208,724-vehicle count also includes Volkswagen Tiguan and Atlas models.
- Can I sell a Q3 with an open recall?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, open recalls and all, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Still, check nhtsa.gov/recalls first, because the listed remedies are free at a dealer.
