Selling a junk or broken Audi A3

Air bags come up in 461 of the 1,003 A3 complaints, as NHTSA counted them on October 10, 2026. That is almost half, and no other part comes close. The power train is next at 107. If your A3 has a lit air bag light, a failed gearbox or an engine that quit, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.

A3 complaints and recalls by year

Our October 10, 2026 pull of NHTSA complaints, S3 and RS 3 included. Nothing is filed under 2014 or 2021. Recent A3s have had only a short time on the road to draw complaints.

All years: 22 crashes, 7 fires, 15 injuries, no deaths. Some A3 recalls cover more than one model year. That is why the recall column totals over 32.

The second generation, Typ 8P (built 2003 to 2013)

EPA data starts the A3 in the US at 2006, so the American cars here begin partway through the second generation. Per Wikipedia, the five-door Sportback arrived in June 2004, and engines included turbocharged 1.2 and 1.4 TFSI fours and a 1.6.

Air bags. Driver inflator recalls 16V079 and 18V082 cover 2005-2013 and 2006-2013 A3s. Those campaigns count 151,767 and 162,782 vehicles and include the Passat, the A4 Cabriolet, the Q5 and others.

Transmission. Power train is the second-biggest complaint on 2006 to 2009 cars, at 33 on the 2006. Recall 09V333 covers some 2009-2010 cars with the DSG gearbox: wires at a temperature sensor's connector may be faulty, and the fix reprograms the transmission control module. Its 16,000 count includes VWs.

Fuel. Recall 09V377 replaced a fuel tank ventilation valve on 2006-2010 A3s and TTs. On diesels, the 2010 lists 12 diesel fuel system complaints, and 11V490 added an improved injector line on 2010-2012 cars. That campaign is mostly VW Jettas and Golfs, at 168,275 vehicles.

The third generation, Typ 8V (sedan model years 2015 to 2020)

Wikipedia gives this A3 on the MQB platform, with 6-speed manual or 6- and 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch gearboxes. The 2015, the first sedan year, has the most complaints of any A3: 233, with 109 about air bags.

The air bag recalls here are about the front passenger seat. 19V474 (2015-2019) found an electrical contact in the passenger occupant detection system could fail. 21V198 (2015-2020) replaced that system's sensor mat and updated its control module. 17V196 updated air bag software on 2017 A3 and S3 sedans after a low-speed crash could fire the passenger bag wrongly. Those three campaigns cover only A3, S3 and RS 3 models, at 138,896, 153,152 and 11,618 vehicles.

Fuel/propulsion complaints run second on the 2015, 2016 and 2019, with 25 on the 2015. Suction pumps inside the tank were recalled twice: 16V647 on 2015-2016 cars and 24V110 on front-drive 2015-2020 sedans and 2015-2019 cabriolets, both shared with VW models. 17V508 reprogrammed the engine computer on 2017-2018 A3s, because it could misread flywheel rotation at start-up.

Newer A3s

Few complaints so far: 11 for 2022 and 19 for 2023 through 2026 combined. The 2022 has 7 recall campaigns. One, 22V652, replaced a front passenger air bag that may have been folded wrong.

Fix it or sell it?

Start with the free check: put the VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls. Passenger air bag sensors, fuel pumps and engine software have all been recall work on the A3. Our open recall guide explains how to handle a dealer visit.

Beyond recalls, set the repair quote against what the A3 would sell for running.

If the quote is close to the car's running value, or higher, sell it as it sits.

Selling the A3 whole

  1. Write down the VIN, mileage and the fault. Mention warning lights on the dash.
  2. Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's parked. An apartment lot, a street spot or a parking structure all work, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Don't pull parts. Tell us about anything already missing.
  5. Have the title and ID at pickup. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Other Audis: the A4, TT and Q3, or all Audi models.

Questions people ask

What do most A3 complaints say?
Air bags. They come up in 461 of the A3's 1,003 NHTSA complaints (our count, October 10, 2026). Many recalls on 2015-2020 A3s deal with the passenger occupant detection system that decides whether the front passenger air bag fires.
Why are there no A3 complaints for 2014 or 2021?
NHTSA's file lists none under those model years. Wikipedia gives the third-generation sedan's model years as 2015 to 2020.
Can I sell an A3 with a deployed air bag or a dead transmission?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
