Across all model years, owners have filed 4,400 complaints on the 5 Series, and 92 recall campaigns name it. If yours sits with a repair bill bigger than the car, you can sell the whole car as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
What owners reported, generation by generation
Owners sent each of these complaints to NHTSA, and our tally stops at October 10, 2026. Younger cars have had fewer seasons on the road to draw them. The vehicle total next to a recall belongs to the whole campaign, which usually reaches beyond the 5 Series.
E28 and E34: model years 1985-1996
Wikipedia says the E28 was built from 1981 to 1988 as a sedan, and the E34 from 1988 to 1996, with a Touring wagon added in 1990. Model years 1985-1988 have just 10 complaints. Model years 1989-1996 have 248, and engine and engine cooling leads each year from 1989 through 1995, 1990 aside.
Recall 98V178 matches that: on 1989-1995 cars, a failed thermostat, water pump or fan belt can spike coolant temperature and pressure, and dealers fitted a new radiator cap. The same campaign is on 7 Series records, so its 340,000 vehicles are not all 5 Series. Recall 96V111 replaced brake light switches on 1990-1994 cars, and 97V131 clipped the cruise and throttle cables on 1989-1995 cars.
E39: model years 1997-2003
The E39 ran from 1995 to 2004, per Wikipedia, with the Touring wagon from 1996. These seven model years hold 681 complaints. The 1997 alone has 106, led by engine and engine cooling (30) and suspension (15). Air bags top 2001, 2002 and 2003.
Two air bag campaigns tell owners not to drive. Recall 19V015 covers driver inflators on 2000-2003 sedans and 2001-2003 wagons, in a 157,549-vehicle campaign that includes the X5. Recall 17V047 covers 2001-2002 525i, 530i and 540i cars.
E60: model years 2004-2010
Wikipedia credits the E60 with bringing iDrive, a head-up display, active cruise control, active steering and voice control to the 5 Series, plus its first turbocharged petrol engine and a 6-speed automatic. These seven years hold 1,908 complaints, the largest share of any 5 Series generation. Electrical system makes the top three on every year from 2004 to 2008.
The 2004 is the standout. It has 321 complaints, 116 about air bags, 46 about seats, and 50 that mention a fire, the most fire mentions for any 5 Series year. Campaign 08V384 had dealers rework the passenger-seat sensor mat on 2004-2006 cars against cracking. Recall 12V126 inspected and secured the positive battery cable bulkhead connector on 2004-2010 cars, in a campaign that also covers the 6 Series, M5 and M6.
The 2008 is second only to the 2011, with 432 complaints: 77 electrical and 63 engine. On 2004-2010 cars, recall 10V446 fixed the brake vacuum pump, whose check valve may weep a little oil over time. The PCV valve heater was recalled for the 2006 under 19V273, then again under 22V119, which covers 2006-2010 cars here. The 2010 has 12 recall campaigns, the most for any 5 Series year.
F10: model years 2011-2017
Wikipedia dates the F10 family to 2010 through 2017. These years hold 1,310 complaints. Engine leads 2011 through 2014 (96, 87, 81 and 44), and engine and engine cooling leads 2015 and 2016. Fuel and propulsion complaints sit in the top three from 2009 through 2012, and again in 2014.
Recall 23V707 replaced the four VANOS bolts on 2010-2011 cars. For the 2012-2016 528i, campaign 24V608 covers the coolant pump plug and a protective shield.
G30 and G60: model years 2018 on
The G30 went on sale in February 2017 and the G60 was revealed on May 24, 2023, according to Wikipedia. Model years 2018 to 2026 hold 243 complaints. The 2018 has 110, and air bags (40) and seat belts (11) are near the top. Recall 19V684 updated back-up camera software on 2018-2020 cars.
Two starter-relay campaigns ask owners to keep the car outdoors until a new starter goes in: 25V636 on 2020-2022 530i cars and 26V441 on 2018-2020 530e plug-in hybrids. On the 2024, complaints name electronic stability control (7) and service brakes (4) most. NHTSA also lists recall 24V104 for 2024-2025 cars, whose integrated brake system may malfunction; that campaign spans BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce models.

Worth fixing?
First, type the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup. BMW dealers perform every remedy above at no charge, so an open campaign is the cheapest repair you'll find.
Past that, it comes down to the quote against the car. Fixing the engine on a 2011-2014, or chasing an electrical fault on a 2004-2008, can cost more than a running one is worth. For a dead engine, blown engine lays out your options. If the car has already burned, fire damage explains what happens next.
How to sell a 5 Series as it sits
- Note the basics: the VIN, the miles, what quit, and whether it rolls.
- Ask us for a number online, or ring (877) 421-6008.
- Say where the 5 Series sits. Garage, street, driveway or a shop's back lot, and anything that slows loading, like a flat tire or a tight alley. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Keep it complete. Removed parts change our number, so leave everything bolted on and flag what's missing.
- On pickup day, keep the title, a driver's license and any keys handy. Check after you sell for your state's plate and insurance steps.

Questions people ask
- Which 5 Series years draw the most complaints?
- The 2011, at 479. After it: the 2008 (432), the 2006 (388), the 2004 (321) and the 2007 (284), all counted through October 10, 2026. A recent 5 Series with few reports is mostly just young.
- Why do so many 2004 complaints mention fire?
- NHTSA's file shows 50 fire mentions on the 2004, the most of any 5 Series year, but a complaint count does not prove a cause. Recall 12V126 covered the positive battery cable connector on 2004-2010 cars. Put the 5 Series VIN into nhtsa.gov/recalls and it shows if this recall, or any other, is still open.
- Will you take a 5 Series that already burned?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, including burned ones, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Tell us how much of the car the fire reached and whether the wheels still turn.
