Selling a junk or non-running BMW 3 Series

Owners have sent NHTSA 10,099 complaints about the BMW 3 Series, more than for any other BMW we cover. That is over a third of the 29,621 complaints filed across all 32 BMW models on this site. The single biggest topic is air bags, with 2,573.

If your 3 Series has quit, needs more than it's worth, or came with a recall letter telling you not to drive it, you don't have to fix it first. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

The 3 Series, one generation at a time

Owners of the 3 Series had sent NHTSA the complaints counted below as of October 10, 2026. It records what people chose to report, nothing more, and a recent car simply hasn't been on the road as long. Where a recall shows a vehicle total, that total spans the entire campaign, usually with other BMWs mixed in.

1984-1998: cooling and cruise control

Wikipedia dates the E30 to 1982 and the E36 to 1990. Model years 1984 through 1990 hold only 104 complaints between them. Counts climb in the early 1990s, and engine and engine cooling leads 1991, 1992 and 1993, with 26, 27 and 43 complaints.

Two old campaigns line up with that. Recall 93V015 covers 1984-1993 cars: a failed coolant part can drive up temperature and pressure in the heater core, so dealers installed a thermostatic bypass valve. Recall 97V131 covers 1992-1997 cars, where the throttle and cruise cables share one lever and a plastic bushing on either can crack. That campaign also appears on 5 Series and 7 Series records, so its 410,000 vehicles are not all 3 Series.

1999-2005: air bags take over

Wikipedia says the E46 launched as a sedan at the turn of 1998. The 2000 model year draws 692 complaints, and 300 of them name the power train. Every other year from 1999 to 2005 has air bags at the top of the list.

The recall letters for these cars were blunt. Five campaigns carry NHTSA's "do not drive" warning: 17V047 for driver inflators on 2000-2002 cars, 15V318 for driver inflators on 2002-2006 cars, 14V428 and 20V018 for passenger air bags on 2000-2006 cars, and 13V172 for passenger air bags on 2002-2003 cars. Recall 19V851 adds 1999 323i and 328i cars with Takata non-azide driver inflators from one plant. Exterior lighting complaints also run high on the 2002, 2003 and 2004: 62, 96 and 166.

2006-2011: the peak years

Wikipedia dates the E9x family to 2004, in sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible form. In NHTSA's file the 2006 model year tops every 3 Series year with 1,243 complaints, and 637 of those are about air bags. The 2007 follows with 1,041.

Electrical complaints swell here: 215 on the 2007 and 160 on the 2008. Recall 17V676 replaced wiring and connectors on 2006-2011 cars. Recall 13V044 replaced the positive battery cable connector on 2007-2011 coupes and convertibles. The PCV valve heater was recalled under 17V683, then again, more widely, under 22V119, which adds a fused wiring harness. The 2008 has 63 complaints that mention a fire, more than any other year. Driver air bags return under 16V071 (2006-2013) and 24V513 (2006-2012).

The 2011 turns to the engine: 211 complaints name the engine and 180 more name engine and engine cooling, out of 894.

2012-2018: the engine leads

Wikipedia places the F30 in 2011. The engine leads each year from 2012 through 2018 except 2015, where engine and engine cooling is slightly ahead. Recall 24V608 covers 2012-2016 328i and 328xi cars among many other BMWs: dealers check the coolant pump's electrical plug, swap parts as needed and add a shield. The 2013 holds 37 complaints that report a crash, the most for any 3 Series year.

2019-2026: the G20 and two park-outside recalls

The G20 was unveiled at the Paris Motor Show on October 2, 2018, per Wikipedia. Model years 2019 to 2026 hold 237 complaints. The 2020 stands out with 106, of which 50 name the engine, and 15 recall campaigns, the most for any year.

Two 3 Series campaigns tell owners to park outdoors, clear of buildings, until a dealer does the fix. Recall 25V636 covers the 2019-2021 330i for an engine starter relay problem; its 199,674 vehicles include the Z4, X3, X4 and Toyota Supra. Recall 26V441 covers the 2016-2018 330e, whose starter relay may corrode. In both, dealers replace the engine starter.

NHTSA complaints and recalls by model year

Recall campaigns are counted per model year, so a campaign that spans several years shows up in each one. The total across all years is 104.

Repair it or let it go?

  1. Run the VIN first. NHTSA's recall lookup shows open campaigns. Per the 3 Series air bag and starter notices above, the dealer repair costs nothing. If a do-not-drive recall is open, don't drive the car to a shop or to us; the truck comes to it. Our open recall guide covers selling with one unfixed.
  2. Engine trouble on a 2011-2018? Ask for a written quote and compare it to a running 3 Series with the same year and miles. When the repair eats most of that, see blown engine and repairs cost more than it is worth.
  3. Lights, windows and warnings acting up on a 2006-2008? Those years carry the wiring recalls. Check them before paying for diagnosis, and read electrical problems if they're done and it still misbehaves.

Selling the car whole

  1. Before you call about the 3 Series, have the VIN, mileage, symptoms and if the wheels turn.
  2. Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Say where it's parked. Home, street, garage or a mechanic's lot are all fine. Tell us if a wheel is off or the car is boxed in, so the right truck shows up. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave it as it is. Don't sell the wheels or the converter first. If anything is already missing, mention it.
  5. When the driver arrives, sign over the title and show ID; keys too if you have them. Plates are handled differently in each state, and after you sell lists the rules.

Lost the title? Start with selling with no title. Comparing BMWs? See the 5 Series, the 1 Series or every BMW we cover.

Questions people ask

Which 3 Series model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
The 2006 leads with 1,243. Behind it sit the 2007 (1,041), the 2011 (894), the 2000 (692) and the 2008 (691). Those counts run to October 10, 2026. A 2023 or 2024 shows only a handful partly because it is young.
My recall letter says not to drive the car. Can I still sell it?
Yes. Several 3 Series air bag campaigns, including 15V318, 17V047, 14V428 and 20V018, warn owners to keep the car parked until a dealer replaces the part. The car does not need to move under its own power. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and our truck loads it wherever it's parked, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
Does this page cover the M3?
No. These counts include the 318i through the 340i, the 330e and the M340i. The M3 has its own complaint and recall records, on our BMW M3 page.
Do I strip parts from my 3 Series before selling?
No. You sell the whole car as it sits, wheels, battery and converter included. Please tell us about any part that's been taken off, because that moves the number.
