Sell a broken or junk BMW M3
The V8 years carry the M3's complaint file. On October 10, 2026, NHTSA had 454 M3 complaints, and 202 came from the 2008 through 2013 models, the E90/E92/E93 generation with the S65 V8. The 2008 by itself has 82, the most of any year.

An M3 with a seized engine, a gearbox stuck in place or a body too far gone to straighten can be sold with no repairs. We buy whole non-running and junk cars. You sell the whole car as it sits, with free pickup anywhere in the US.
One warning first: four air bag campaigns on 2000-2006 M3s carry a "do not drive" notice. Check the VIN at NHTSA's recall lookup before anyone drives it anywhere.
Six generations at a glance
Engines and gearboxes are from Wikipedia. Complaint counts are owner complaints in NHTSA's file. Years not listed have none.

| E30 | 1986-1991 | 2.3-2.5 S14 four, 5-speed manual | 1988 | 2 |
| E36 | 1992-1999 | 3.0 S50B30US six early, 3.2 S52 later (US); manual, ZF automatic or SMG | 1995-1999 | 57 |
| E46 | 2000-2006 | 3.2 S54 six; 6-speed manual or SMG-II | 2001-2006 | 165 |

What owners reported, generation by generation
E46, 2001-2006: the air bag recalls
The 2003 has 54 complaints. Air bags lead with 15, power train follows with 14. Air bags are also the top component on the 2004 (9 of 31), 2005 (4 of 12) and 2006 (9 of 14). On the 2002, engine and engine cooling leads with 12 of 40.
Those air bag complaints sit beside a stack of air bag recalls. Every campaign below also covers 3 Series models, so the vehicle counts are whole-campaign numbers:
- 13V172, 2002-2003 M3 coupes and convertibles, passenger air bag, 43,204 vehicles. Do not drive.
- 15V318, 2002-2006, driver frontal air bag inflator, 419,235 vehicles. Do not drive.
- 17V047, 2000-2002, driver air bag inflator, 230,117 vehicles. Do not drive.
- 14V428, 2001-2006, passenger air bag, 574,007 vehicles. Do not drive.
- 20V018, 2000-2006 M3 coupe and convertible, passenger front air bag, 292,948 vehicles.
An E46 with one of these still open should not be driven to a buyer. It doesn't need to be: the truck comes to it. Separately, 03V160 replaces the window anti-pinch control unit on some 2003 cars.
E90/E92/E93, 2008-2013: the V8 years
Power train comes up most on the 2008 (35 of 82) and on the 2009 (24 of 45). The engine is second on the 2008 with 18 and first on the 2011 with 18 of 41. The complaint counts don't say which gearbox a car had; Wikipedia lists both a 6-speed manual and a 7-speed Getrag dual-clutch for this generation.
Recalls on these years:
- 19V472 secures the positive battery cable connection at the fuse box on 2008-2012 M3 coupes and convertibles and 2008-2011 sedans. 16,641 vehicles, a campaign that also includes the 328i and 335d.
- 17V676 replaces wiring and electrical connectors on 2006-2011 M3s and many 3 Series models, 702,965 vehicles.
- 16V071 and 20V017 replace the driver's air bag or its inflator. Their 840,000 and 59,965 vehicles span the 1 Series, 3 Series, X1 and more.
E36 and E30: the older cars
The E36 years, 1995-1999, have 57 complaints. On the 1995, hydraulic service brakes lead with 4 of 12; on the 1997, tires lead with 4 of 19. Five campaigns reach these cars, all large multi-model campaigns: 94V151 (a transmission crossmember on 1995 automatics), 96V111 (brake light switch, 1995), 97V131 (a clip for the cruise control and throttle cables, 1995-1997), 98V178 (a new radiator cap, 1992-1995) and 99V063 (side air bag control module reprogramming, 1997-1999).
The single E30 year in the file, 1988, has 2 complaints, both engine and engine cooling. Recall 93V015 adds a thermostatic bypass valve for the heater core on 1988-1991 cars, a 375,000-vehicle campaign.
F80 and G80, 2015 on
The F80 years have 21 complaints. On the 2018, 6 of 9 name the fuel and propulsion system. Recall 24V288 replaces head air bags on 2014-2015 M3 sedans along with 2, 3 and 4 Series models, 5,761 vehicles. Wikipedia notes the F80 CS was limited to 1,200 units.
The G80 years have 7 complaints from 2021 through 2025. Recall 21V554 inspects seat belt retractors on 2021 cars across a 21,537-vehicle campaign that also covers the 2 Series, 4 Series and M4. Owners of cars this new haven't had long to send in reports.

Fix the M3 or sell it?
Ask for the repair cost in writing and look up the price of a running M3 just like yours. When the repair takes up most of that, selling it broken is usually simpler.
- Clear the recalls. The do-not-drive air bag campaigns on E46 cars come first. Open recall explains selling a car with one still open.
- Engine gone on a V8 car? See blown engine for how to weigh a rebuild against selling.
- DCT acting up? Dual-clutch trouble covers the symptoms.
- Heavily modified? Modified or deleted covers what changes when a car has been altered. An E30 or E36 that has sat for years may fit old project car better.
Selling your M3 whole
- Have on hand the VIN and mileage, and know the problem and if the wheels turn.
- Ask for an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it is and how it sits: lowered, on jack stands, missing a wheel, in a tight garage. That decides which truck comes. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the parts on. The engine, wheels and catalytic converters stay. Missing pieces affect the offer, so let us know about them.
- When the M3 leaves, the driver takes the title and every key you have, and checks your photo ID. After you sell covers plates and insurance.
Questions people ask
- Which M3 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- The 2008, with 82 as of October 10, 2026. The 2003 has 54, the 2009 has 45, the 2011 has 41 and the 2002 has 40. The F80 and G80 cars from 2015 on have 28 between them, partly because those cars have spent fewer years with owners.
- My 2000-2006 M3 has an open air bag recall. Can I still sell it?
- Yes. These cars have four air bag campaigns (13V172, 15V318, 17V047 and 14V428) that say to stop driving until it's fixed, so don't drive it over to a buyer either. We buy whole non-running and junk cars and pickup is free anywhere in the US, so the truck comes to the car. You can also have a BMW dealer do the recall repair first.
- Does recall 16V071's 840,000 vehicles mean 840,000 M3s?
- No. That count is the whole campaign, which covers 1 Series, 3 Series, M3 and other BMW models. Every recall vehicle count on this page is for the whole campaign.
- Do I have to take the M3's engine or wheels out to sell it?
- No. You sell the whole car as it sits. Let us know about missing parts or any mods at the time you request an offer.
