Sell your broken BMW 4 Series
On the BMW 4 Series, owner complaints point at the engine bay more than anywhere else. "Engine" is named 70 times and "engine and engine cooling" 66 times in the 369 complaints 4 Series owners had lodged by October 10, 2026. And the first generation, built 2014 to 2020, holds 323 of those 369.

Own a 2021 or 2022 430i or 430i Convertible? Check recall 25V636 before anything else. Its advice is to keep the car outdoors and clear of buildings until the engine starter gets swapped. Your VIN goes into NHTSA's recall lookup.
Two generations
Wikipedia says the first generation, the F32/F33/F36, was built from 2014 to 2020 and took over from the coupe and convertible versions of the E92/E93 3 Series. The second, the G22/G23/G26, launched in June 2020 and shares many features with the G20 3 Series. EPA lists coupes, convertibles and Gran Coupes, from the 428i and 435i to the 430i.
2014-2020: engine complaints and the most crashes
The 2015 has 95 complaints, the most of any year. Engine and engine cooling leads with 26 and the engine follows with 13. That year also reports 12 crashes and 10 injured. On the 2014 (69 complaints) the engine leads with 18 and the electrical system follows with 11. On the 2016 (56), engine and engine cooling leads again with 15. The 2018 has 43 complaints, the engine named in 11, with 9 people listed as injured.
Three campaigns on these years touch the engine bay. All are multi-model, so the vehicle counts cover more than the 4 Series:
- 24V608 looks over the water pump and its connector, replaces them as needed and adds a protective shield on 2014-2016 428i and 428i xDrive cars. 720,796 vehicles, alongside the X1, Z4, 3 Series and 5 Series.
- 15V189 replaces the fuel pump on 2014-2015 cars including the 428i and 435i coupes. 18,054 vehicles.
- 14V627 adds a locking ring for the camshaft seal disk on 2014 cars. 8,988 vehicles.
Air bags draw six more campaigns on the first generation: 15V148 (control module software on 2015 convertibles built October 22, 2014, to February 27, 2015), 16V914 (modules on 2017 430i and 440i cars), 19V352 (knee air bags on 2019-2020), 24V288 and 24V527 (head and driver air bags on 2014-2015), and 25V871 (head air bags on 2014 428i and 435i coupes, owner letters mailed February 12, 2026).
2021 and newer: starters and electrics
The G22 years are far quieter so far: 19 complaints on the 2021, then 8, 6, 3, 8 and 2 through 2026. On the 2021, the electrical system leads with 6 and seat belts follow with 4. Those cars are young, with fewer years for owners to file anything.
The recall list is busier than the complaint count. The 2021 alone has 7 campaigns. The starter is the thread running through them:
- 25V636, park outside: the engine starter relay on 2021-2022 430i and 430i Convertible. Dealers replace the starter. The 199,674-vehicle campaign includes the 330i, 530i, X3, X4, Z4, 230i and Toyota Supra.
- 26V056: a new engine starter on 2021-2024 4 Series Gran Coupe, convertible and xDrive models. 87,394 vehicles, Supra included. Owner letters went out July 21, 2026.
- 25V202: the starter-generator and positive battery cable on 2025 430i coupes, convertibles and Gran Coupes. 4,557 vehicles.
- 20V761: the connection between the 48-volt battery and the starter-generator on the 2021 M440i xDrive Coupe. 812 vehicles.
Others: 21V554 checks seat belt retractors on 2021 cars. 21V176 updated head-thorax air bag software on 2021 430i and M440i convertibles before they left dealers. 22V267 reprograms the roof control unit on the 2022 4 Series Gran Coupe.

Worth fixing?
Put the written repair quote next to what the same 4 Series sells for running. When the quote climbs toward that number, selling unrepaired is usually the better call.
- Check recalls first. Starter, water pump and air bag campaigns are all free dealer repairs. Open recall explains your options if one is still open.
- Running hot or losing coolant? See head gasket or overheating. If the engine is already gone, blown engine covers what comes next.
- Crash damage? With 36 crashes in the file, many 4 Series end up here after a wreck. Wrecked or totaled and insurer totaled it cover both paths.
Selling a 4 Series as it sits
- Write out the VIN and mileage, plus what went wrong and if it can roll or steer.
- Request an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Tell us where it sits. If it is a 2021-2022 430i under the park-outside recall, say whether it is parked outdoors. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave every part on, wheels and catalytic converters included. Tell us about anything removed.
- For the 4 Series pickup, have the title ready and your photo ID on hand. After you sell covers plates, insurance and the title by state.
