Selling a BMW X2 that needs too much

Half of the BMW X2's 30 NHTSA complaints are filed on one year, the 2018, its first in the US. After that the file goes quiet until the second generation, whose recalls center on the brake system.

First generation (F39): 2018-2023 model years

Wikipedia says the first X2 was built from November 2017 to October 2023 in Regensburg, Germany (and in China for that market), on the UKL2 platform it shares with the X1 and MINI Countryman. Engines included a 1.5-liter B38 turbo three and a 2.0-liter B48 turbo four, with an 8-speed Aisin automatic or a 7-speed dual-clutch. The EPA lists US versions as the sDrive28i, xDrive28i and M35i.

These years hold 22 complaints. The 2018 has 15: exterior lighting leads with four, then the electrical system with two. Two of its complaints report a crash and one a fire.

Recalls on these cars are small campaigns shared with the X1 and MINI models:

  • 19V601 (2019 xDrive28i): the steering tie rod may need replacing. Dealers inspect and replace tie rods and ball joints as needed. 32 vehicles across the whole campaign.
  • 20V283 (2020): dealers replace the curtain air bag control unit. 76 vehicles across the whole campaign.

Second generation (U10): 2024 on

Wikipedia says the second X2 has been built in Regensburg since November 2023, with a 2.0-liter B48 turbo four and a 7-speed Steptronic automatic. The all-electric version is called the iX2. These years have eight complaints so far, five of them on the 2026. Those are young cars, so the file on them is thin for now.

Three recalls on 2024-2025 cars involve the integrated brake system:

  • 24V104: the system may malfunction; dealers replace it. It reaches 266,716 vehicles, BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce models from 2023 to 2025.
  • 24V697 (2024): dealers replace the integrated brake system, in a campaign of 309 across many models.
  • 26V422 (2025): dealers inspect the system and replace it if needed.

Seat belts are the other theme. Recall 25V616 replaces both front retractors on some 2025-2026 cars, and 25V717 replaces rear belts on some 2026 cars whose retractor housing pin may have been damaged in production. Both campaigns include the X1 and MINI models.
