Selling a BMW X1 that's done
Of the 849 X1 complaints NHTSA had as of October 10, 2026, 327 belong to the 2016 and 2017 BMW X1, the opening two years of the second generation. If your X1 is one of them, or any year where the repair bill has outrun the car, you can sell it as it sits. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, and pickup is free anywhere in the US.

Twenty-seven recall campaigns touch the X1, and several of them replace air bags or brake parts. Look up your VIN on NHTSA's recall page before you decide anything.
The X1 by generation
Wikipedia lists three generations: the E84 from 2009, the F48 from 2016 and the U11 from 2022. EPA fuel economy data has US model years from 2013 through 2027. The E84 was rear-wheel drive. The F48 and U11 are front-wheel drive. All three offered xDrive all-wheel drive.
2013-2015: air bags on the E84
The first X1 came to the US late in its run. Wikipedia says BMW cut development and pre-production time by 40 percent to get it built, and that the 2013 facelift brought EfficientDynamics to every model. Worldwide, the original X1 sold 820,529 units.
On all three of these years, air bags top the list: 32 complaints on the 2013, 39 on the 2014 and 29 on the 2015. Recall 19V016 replaces the driver's frontal air bag module on 2015 X1 sDrive28i, xDrive28i and xDrive35i models, 12,880 vehicles. Two older campaigns, 16V071 and 20V017, also replace driver air bags on 2013-2015 X1s. They cover the 1 Series, 3 Series and other models too, so their 840,000 and 59,965 vehicle counts are not X1 numbers.
The engine is second on the 2013, with 20 complaints. Three campaigns reach under the hood on these years:
- 13V454 modifies cars to prevent poor lubrication of the vacuum pump that feeds the brake power assist.
- 14V627 adds a locking ring to hold the camshaft seal disk in place.
- 24V608, reported in August 2024, has dealers check the water pump, plus its plug connector, on 2012-2015 X1s and then fit a protective shield. Its 720,796 vehicles span the X1, Z4, 3 Series, 5 Series and more.
2016-2019: the F48's busiest years
The 2016 (163) and 2017 (164) carry the most complaints of any X1. On the 2016, NHTSA's "unknown or other" category leads with 57, then power train with 29 and visibility and wipers with 18. On the 2017, power train leads with 45, and 11 people are listed as injured.
Structure is third on the 2017 (24) and first on the 2018 (20). That is the same NHTSA heading, roof and pillars, as recall 19V349: on 2016-2019 X1s, the upper B-pillar trim may not absorb enough energy if an occupant's head hits it in a crash. Dealers replace the trim pieces. The campaign lists 106,182 vehicles.
Three more campaigns sit on these years:
- 17V062: on some 2016-2017 X1s, the instrument panel may not let the passenger-side front air bag deploy properly. Dealers replace the panel.
- 16V747: a new driver's seat belt assembly on 2016-2017 X1s. The 15,455-vehicle campaign also covers MINI and Rolls-Royce models.
- 19V074: taillight brackets on 2018-2019 X1s can crack and let the lights loosen. 5,920 vehicles.
After that the file goes quiet. The 2019 through 2022 have 35 complaints between them: 12, 13, 9 and 1.
2023 and newer: brakes and stability control
Wikipedia dates the U11 to 2022 and says it rides on the same UKL2 platform as the F48, now with an electric version called the iX1. EPA lists the xDrive28i and M35i among recent X1 variants.
The 2023 has 70 complaints, and the top two components tie: electronic stability control and service brakes, 22 each. The 2024 has 30, again led by service brakes and stability control at 8 each. Two campaigns cover the integrated brake system on these years. 24V104 replaces it on 2023-2025 BMW, MINI and Rolls-Royce models, 266,716 vehicles in all. 24V739 replaces the integrated brake module on 2023-2024 X1, X5, X6, X7 and other models, 11,579 vehicles.
Also on these years: 23V079 (a driver's air bag that may have been made incorrectly, on 2022-2023 X1 xDrive28i and iX models), 24V829 (B-pillar reinforcement plates on 2025 X1 xDrive28i and M35i, 3,312 vehicles) and 25V616 (front seat belt retractors on 2025-2026 X1, X2 and MINI models). The 2025 and 2026 have spent little time with owners, so their 17 and 1 are early counts.
X1 complaints and recalls, year by year
We took these X1 complaint numbers from NHTSA on October 10, 2026. For each X1 model year, "Campaigns" is the number of recall campaigns on record. Because one campaign can reach several model years, the column totals 48 entries for 27 campaigns.
| Model year | Complaints | Crashes | Fires | Injured | Campaigns | Most-named component |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2013 | 102 | 4 | 1 | 0 | 5 | Air bags (32) |
| 2014 | 114 | 6 | 5 | 5 | 6 | Air bags (39) |
| 2015 | 94 | 4 | 5 | 3 | 4 | Air bags (29) |
| 2016 | 163 | 2 | 2 | 5 | 4 | Unknown or other (57) |
| 2017 | 164 | 3 | 0 | 11 | 4 | Power train (45) |
| 2018 | 59 | 6 | 2 | 6 | 4 | Structure (20) |
| 2019 | 12 | 1 | 0 | 3 | 3 | Electrical system (4) |
| 2020 | 13 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 1 | Engine (3) |
| 2021 | 9 | 4 | 0 | 4 | 1 | Air bags (4) |
| 2022 | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 | 2 | Engine (1) |
| 2023 | 70 | 2 | 0 | 0 | 6 | Stability control and service brakes (22 each) |
| 2024 | 30 | 3 | 0 | 1 | 3 | Service brakes and stability control (8 each) |
| 2025 | 17 | 3 | 1 | 0 | 3 | Electrical system (5) |
| 2026 | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 | 2 | Service brakes (1) |
Across every year: 849 complaints, 40 crashes, 17 fires, 42 injured, no deaths and 48 tows.
Repair it or let it go?
Get a written repair price, then check what a healthy X1 with that year and mileage sells for. When the first figure creeps toward the second, selling it unrepaired starts to make sense. Repairs cost more than it is worth walks through the math.
- Run the VIN first. The X1 recall remedies listed above are dealer repairs done free of charge.
- Brake or stability warnings on a 2023-2024? Ask a BMW dealer whether 24V104 or 24V739 is open on that VIN.
- Power train trouble on a 2016-2017? Get the diagnosis in writing before you price anything.
- Been in a crash? See wrecked or totaled, or airbags deployed if they went off.
Selling the X1 whole
- Note the VIN and mileage, plus the problem and if it can roll.
- Get an offer online, or call (877) 421-6008.
- Describe the spot: home driveway, apartment garage, behind a body shop. A locked wheel or an X1 that won't roll needs a different truck, so mention either. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
- Leave the X1 whole. The wheels, battery and catalytic converter stay put. Let us know about any part that's already off, since it affects the offer.
- When we come, give us the title and show your ID. Plate rules vary by state, and after you sell explains them. No title? Start with selling with no title.

Questions people ask
- Which BMW X1 model years have the most NHTSA complaints?
- As of October 10, 2026, the 2017 shows 164 and the 2016 shows 163. That adds up to 327 of the X1's 849. The 2014 (114) and 2013 (102) come next. A 2025 X1 is so new that its small count doesn't tell the whole story.
- Is there a brake recall on the 2023 or 2024 X1?
- Yes, two cover the integrated brake system. Recall 24V104 replaces the system on 2023-2025 X1s, and 24V739 replaces the integrated brake module on the 2023. Both campaigns include other models, so their vehicle counts are not X1 counts. Your X1 VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls shows which of these are still open.
- Recall 24V608 lists 720,796 vehicles. Were that many X1s recalled?
- No. That is the whole campaign. It covers 2012-2015 X1 sDrive28i and xDrive28i models along with the Z4, 3 Series, 5 Series, 2 Series, 4 Series and X5 40e, so the X1 is only part of the number.
- Will you buy an X1 that won't start or move?
- Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Mention if it can roll and where it's parked, and we send a truck that fits.
