Selling a junk or non-running BMW X3

Seats are the odd entry in the X3's complaint file. Owners have sent NHTSA 152 complaints about X3 seats, and 144 of them are on the first four model years, 2004 to 2007. On most cars, seats barely register.

Problems by generation

X3 owners filed these complaints with NHTSA. We stopped counting on October 10, 2026, so the newest trucks are short on time to rack them up. A recall's vehicle count covers the whole campaign, and many of these include the 3 Series, 5 Series, X4 or X5.

E83: model years 2004-2010

Wikipedia says the first X3 was built from August 2003 to August 2010, mostly by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria, with four-cylinder 2.0 and six-cylinder 2.5 and 3.0 petrol engines and 6-speed automatic or manual gearboxes. These seven model years hold 854 complaints.

The seat complaints tie to the passenger air bag. On 2004-2006 X3s, campaign 08V384 had the passenger seat's sensor mat reworked, since riders getting in and out could crack it. Recall 17V605 replaced the occupant detection mat, which decides if and how the passenger air bag deploys, on 2006-2010 X3 2.5i, 3.0i and xDrive30i models. Air bags lead complaints on every year from 2006 to 2010.

No X3 year has more complaints than the 2007's 258: 77 air bags, 40 seats and 39 power train. Its owners also reported 27 injuries, the most for any year. Driver air bags were recalled under 16V071 and 20V017 for 2007-2010 X3s, and the PCV valve heater under 17V683 and 22V119.

F25: model years 2011-2017

Production moved to BMW's plant in Greer, South Carolina, starting September 1, 2010, per Wikipedia. Engines were a 2.0 four and 3.0 sixes, with a ZF 8-speed automatic. These years hold 765 complaints.

The 2013 is the one to know. It has 226 complaints, and 131 name the engine, the biggest count for one component in any X3 year. Recall 13V454 modified 2013-2014 X3s to prevent poor vacuum pump lubrication. Recalls 14V176 and 23V707 replaced VANOS bolts on 2010-2011 models. Campaign 24V608 looks at the coolant pump connector on 2013-2017 X3s.

Two more cover the whole run. Recall 16V333 welds a reinforcing bracket to the child seat lower anchor bars on 2011-2017 X3s. Recall 21V907 replaces the EGR cooler on 2015-2017 X3 xDrive28d diesels and inspects the intake manifold. Wikipedia's BMW article notes the same part had a bigger chapter abroad: in 2018 BMW recalled 106,000 diesels in South Korea over an EGR module linked to 39 engine fires.

G01: model years 2018-2024

Wikipedia dates the G01 to August 2017 through August 2024, built at Spartanburg and other plants, with a 2.0 turbo four, 3.0 turbo sixes and a plug-in hybrid with a 12 kWh battery. These years hold 603 complaints. The engine leads the 2018; the electrical system leads 2019 through 2022.

The 2020 has 16 recall campaigns, the most for any X3 year. One, 19V678, told owners of 368 X3 and X4 vehicles not to drive because the front axle swivel bearings may not have been heat treated properly. Recall 24V534 replaces cargo rail attachment bolts on 2018-2023 X3s. Starter campaigns 25V636 (2020-2022, park outside) and 26V056 (2021-2023 here) replace the engine starter.

G45: model years 2025 on

The fourth generation was unveiled on June 19, 2024, with sales starting late that year as 2025 models, Wikipedia says. The 2025 and 2026 hold 57 complaints so far.

Fix it, or sell it as is?

The free fixes come first. Put the VIN into NHTSA's recall lookup; every campaign above is a no-charge dealer repair. An open seat mat or air bag recall on an early X3 is worth clearing whatever you decide.

For anything else, a written quote decides it. Compare it with what the same X3 sells for running. If an engine on a 2011-2017 is the issue, blown engine lays out the choice. On a diesel with emissions faults, see diesel DPF or DEF trouble.

How to sell your X3 as it is

  1. Write down the basics: VIN, miles, the problem, and whether it moves.
  2. Ask for an offer online or call (877) 421-6008.
  3. Tell us the location and anything that affects loading: a parking garage, a locked gate, a missing wheel. Pickup is free anywhere in the US.
  4. Leave the parts on. Mention anything already removed, since that changes the offer.
  5. At handover, give the driver the title, show a photo ID and pass over the keys. See after you sell for plates and insurance in your state.

Questions people ask

Which X3 model years have the most complaints?
The 2007 tops the list at 258, followed by the 2013 (226), the 2019 (170), the 2006 (143) and the 2004 (138), counted through October 10, 2026. Recent X3s have had fewer years to gather them.
Why do early X3 complaints talk about seats and air bags?
Two recalls covered the front passenger seat mat that tells the air bag system whether someone is sitting there: 08V384 on 2004-2006 X3s and 17V605 on 2006-2010 X3s. Of the 152 seat complaints in NHTSA's file, 144 are on the 2004 through 2007.
Do you buy an X3 with a diesel or emissions problem?
Yes. We buy whole non-running and junk cars, diesel or gas, with free pickup anywhere in the US. Check recall 21V907 first if yours is a 2015-2017 xDrive28d; it covers the EGR cooler and is done free by dealers.
